My read on the book is simple--there is no way I can complain about my adversity or my challenges when I read about frostbite at 12,000 feet, or 150 foot plummets down the side of a mountain. I do know this, there have been many times I have felt like my own life was in free-fall, and knowing God knows, helps me know it isn't going to be fatal. It's one of the greatest challenges on Earth; an ascent to the top of the world on the slopes of Mt Everest!
Relive the entire event Eric Alexander experienced; discover with him the grace and faith-empowering journey he traveled. Hear the lessons Eric gleaned, in May 2001 as he and the record-setting team scaled the heights of Everest. More importantly experience the camaraderie between Eric and his blind friend and fellow climber Erik Weihenmayer. Eric has learned much about faith, trust, prayer, depending on God, as well as perseverance during these climbs. A member of a rare and adventurous group of achievers, he has been instrumental in helping others, often with physical or mental disabilities, to achieve their own dreams as well.
"I have read several accounts of Everest climbs, but none gave me the "behind the scenes" view this book provides... Whether you get exercise climbing mountains or strolling shopping malls, you'll find your heart racing as you read The Summit by Eric Alexander. If not, you should call 911 immediately and get checked for a pulse." — Philip Yancey
Having conquered challenges most will never experience, including a 150-foot fall in the Himalayas during training, Eric’s faith guided him during his recovery, the tragic loss of a friend in the backcountry of Colorado, as well as his preparation for the 2001 Everest expedition. Being a follower of Christ is hard. The Summit is hard, but so is life. Make sure you have all the equipment and experience from someone who has been there, not just someone who has read about it. A summit without a plan is a disaster, not an adventure! Have a plan. Climb The Summit in your world. Let Eric and his fellow adventure-ers help point you in the right direction and give you tips along the way.
Eric begins each chapter with the description of one of the major peaks in the world, then some facts about it - elevation, and classifications of all sorts. Then he offers a few specific details about the actual climbing experience up that mountain. Summits? Obstacles? We all have them, but for the overwhelming majority of us they will never include the treacherous conditions of a major mountain ascent like Everest.
