New Living Translation Bible Guide
In July of 1996, The New Living Translation was published by Tyndale House Publishers. It was a revision of the original Living Bible. The NLT was seven years in the making. The goal was to create a Bible especially usable for reading aloud in group teaching or worship settings.
The New Living Translation was founded on the most recent scholarship in the theory of translation, with the goal of communicating the meaning of the ancient Bible texts as accurately as possible to the modern reader. It seeks to preserve the freshness and readability of the original paraphrase while providing the accuracy and reliability of a translation prepared by a team of 90 biblical scholars.
The translators took on the challenge of producing a text that would have the same impact in the life of today's readers as the original text had for the original readers. The method employed to reach this goal in The New Living Translation, was to translate entire thoughts (instead of just words) into natural, everyday English. The NLT is a thought for thought, rather than word for word (literal) translation.
Since it is not possible to literally translate every Hebrew, Greek or Aramaic Word into English, the vast majority of Bible scholars embrace the principle of dynamic equivalence—rendering the true meaning of an ancient phrase or passage in its closest contemporary English language equivalent.
The NLT second edition represents a new benchmark in dynamic equivalence, carefully taking into account both the literal and dynamic renderings and where both are equally clear, accepting the more word-for-word direction. This balance of living language and precise scholarship sets the standard for Bible translations. As a result, it is easy to read and understand, while correctly conveying the original meaning of text.
The NLT Life Application Study Bible is a favorite in the collection of NLT Bibles. It is available in a number of colors, styles, and variations of bindings including bonded leather, faux leather, and a very attractive series of TuTone leather bindings unlike any other Bibles.
