Leather Bound Bible Guide

Bible Bindings

Genuine Leather Bibles

The term leather can refer to many different products. In its simplest definition leather is an animal skin which has been tanned, stretched, brushed, scraped, boarded, or in some other way prepared for commercial use. Remember Leather can be the skin of many different animals: cattle (or calves) are the most common, but Bibles are also bound in leathers made from skins of goats, sheep, camels, and others as described below. Special order leathers are available on a very limited basis, but are very cost prohibitive for most people. They would include species such as alligator, ostich, and even stingray! Special order leather bindings start at $500. and are not returnable.
Genuine Leather – is a durable natural cowhide, in most cases processed commercially using the tanning or putrescible process to create a flexible, durable, and luxurious cover; typically more valuable and thus higher priced. This is an excellent Bible cover for the serious Bible owner as it will outlast most bonded leathers by many years.
Bonded Leather – a little like comparing steak and ground beef. Bonded leather is real leather, but it is residual leather product or leather which in some way is no longer in its original solid form. That leather material is mixed with a bonding agent, then die-cut to the desired shape. The final product has the look, smell, and surface texture of genuine cowhide leather but at a reduced price. It is the most common Bible cover sold today.
Italian Leather – is regarded as one of the best leathers in the world. The best and most trusted Bible companies use Italian Leather from Italy. Better tended cattle render softer, suppler leather. Genuine Italian leather is an excellent investment-a perfect Bible to be passed down from generation to generation.
Goatskin – is a very sought-after “hand-boarded” leather which is very soft to the touch. Goatskin is tanned using sumac or vegetable compounds for an exceptionally fine finish, often with an almost polished look. This beautiful Bible is meant to be handled, cherished, and read every day.
Padded Leather – Genuine leather as above, with padding under the leather to create a soft, plush feel, much like padded carpet. Padded Bibles, sometimes referred to as “table Bibles” are favorites for family Bibles. Typically a larger size Bible: 10 X 14 minimum.
Duo-Tone Leather – Can mean bonded leather, or imitation leather, or genuine leather in 2 or more colors. Read descriptions and “additional features” carefully, including the Item Specifications Section. Although no attempt is made at deception, various Bible manufacturers describe their products differently. The most pronounced feature of Duo-tone is the subdivided sections in different colors, which may be two color sections, or multiple colors in a patchwork.
Calf-skin Leather – often called “vellum”. Calfskin has a unique textured grain. Two very unique types are honey, and veiney. Honey is the most common textured grain leather, dyed to any color. Veiney, however tells a fabulously Biblical story-for centuries the same process has been used to create the more pronounced and shaded-almost "spilled ink" look to the grain. The calfskin is actually stained with real blood.
Morocco Leather – is made from goatskin, then dyed on the grain side (traditionally red, using sumac), and tanned by hand to bring out the one-of-a-kind surface grain which shows up in a very distinctive birds eye shaped pattern. A premium leather Bible.
French Morocco - French Morocco (or Moroccan) is an imitation of the genuine Morocco Leather above. The French Moroccan version is actually made of sheepskin; also known as saffian. French Morocco leather is a good, durable leather option at a lower price point.
Imitation & Faux Leather
As a broad term imitation leather is simply defined as a synthetic product which has many characteristics of true leather, such as simulated grain, surface texture, and softness. Imitation Leather is synthesized from any number of man-made compounds, including resin (plastic), microfiber mixtures, petroleum based compounds, and various polymer blends.

Leatherlike – is a trademarked imitation leather produced exclusively for Tyndale Publishers. It is a premium imitation product with the look, and feel of real leather; durable and inexpensive.
Leathersoft – is the trademarked imitation leather product exclusive to Nelson Bibles, a division of Thomas Nelson Publishers. Leathersoft is a very high quality leather substitute with one of the longest life-expectancies in the industry.
Waterproof – A limited number of Bibles are truly “waterproof”, meaning immune to the elements. Several Publishers manufacture Waterproof Bibles, which are the environmentally friendly alternative to disposable paper. Perfect for the pool, the sportsman, and mission trips.
Flexsoft – is a Bible binding trade name belonging to Hendrickson Publishing. It is and excellent representation of a thin, compact carry-along Bible. Loved by youth for its style, the cover has leather-like features, but the durability and strength of modern technology.
Hardcover – also sometimes referred to as “clothbound”, the hardback concept is the most common for any book other than paperback. A hardcover Bible is made for rugged use and lasting durability. Hardcover Bibles make perfect pew Bibles, even the worn edges lend a feeling of time-honored worship and love of God’s Word.
Paperback – is a modern form of God’s Word. A teen, a young adult, anyone who loves to read will feel perfectly comfortable with this simple style Bible; whether in a backpack, at youth church, or in the school lunchroom. Paperback Bibles are made better than even just a few years ago, but while not made for years of use, they will hold up nicely to most harsh use.
The Bible has come a LONG ways since the Prophets and Apostles penned the scrolls. The way a Bible is bound tells a story alongside the owner, and offers a sense of beauty and value to the recipient of a gift Bible.
