Reviews - What do customers think about Quieting (Bishop's Family #2)?

Review from Rambles of a SAHM  Jul 6, 2016
Suzanne Woods Fisher has long been one of my favorite authors of Amish fiction. She has a knack for using interesting situations in the context of an Amish setting. This time around she uses the topic of genealogical research.

Abigail Stoltzfus has joined her father in his research endeavors. Unfortunately for her, her mother and grandmother think she needs to settle down and get married. In order to achieve that her grandmother has insisted she accompany her to Stoney Ridge.

Stoney Ridge is in the midst of it's own controversies. Bishop Glick and minister David Stoltzfus continue to see things differently and the tension in the community is mounting. Unfortunately Abigail is David's niece and the only eligible bachelor seems to be Dane Glick who is from the bishop's family.

As events unfold it looks as if there is going to be a quieting among the people. I found this to be especially interesting. I've read many stories about shunning and banning but this is the first I've read about a quieting. A quieting is when a church leader is removed and it is a very serious and solemn event that grieves the entire community.

Fisher explores how misplaced pride really does lead to destruction. Not only for the individual but for the community. Once again this is a solid book that is both entertaining and introspective. If you like Amish fiction with more of a contemporary flair I think you will enjoy this book.

I received a copy of this book to facilitate my review.

A wonderfully deep Amish novel!  Jun 16, 2016
This book is part of a “true” series. You need to read book one before reading this one for the story to make sense.

A few new characters arrive in Stoney Ridge to join the community. They are as well developed as all of the previous characters. I thoroughly enjoyed my second visit in this small town. A number of the returning characters have matured beautifully and I really liked seeing how they handle the new problems and questions that they face.

The recurring theme through this story is stubborn people who see their whole purpose as “fixing” everything for everyone. It was very thought provoking for me to see how others struggled to understand them. They had to learn how to deal with these difficult individuals and how to trust God to lead them as to when to stand up to them.

I received a free copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for my honest opinion.

Great Characterization  May 31, 2016
I enjoyed going back and visiting with the Stoltzfus family in The Quieting the second in The Bishop’s Family series. Widower David Stoltzfus is still dealing with the problems of his church while things seem to have calmed down a bit in his household. That is until his mother and two of his nieces, Abigail and Laura, stop by unannounced and with the good intentions of helping him and his family. We received the viewpoints of David, his 16 year old son Jesse, and Abigail in this read. Abigail was the new viewpoint and I really liked her. She is a very literal person, very smart, and does not have a sense of humor. This has caused tension at her home and now in her uncle’s home. Throw in David’s meddling mother who is on several missions, one of them being to see Abigail married. Abigail has only come to help her Uncle David and to finish her father’s genealogical research project for a client. Abigail finds a friend in Dane Glick, who is a very jolly person who also happens to have his sights set on marrying her.
This was a very good read, at times humorous and others thought provoking that showed how people are very different and you cannot always control the outcomes of the situations or them. David and Birdy’s love story continues to develop and I was glad to see Jesse maturing as a character from the last book. I look forward to the next in The Bishop’s Family series. I received a copy for an honest review from Revell Publishing and the opinions are my own.

return to Stoney Ridge  May 24, 2016
David Stoltzfus' Bent N' Dent store becomes an active place as he hears his nieces have arrived from Ohio, unexpectedly, and... his mother bursts through the door telling him the layout of his store is all wrong. What a way to continue an otherwise quiet day.

Daughter Ruthie Stoltfus is equally befuddled at home as she tries to sort out what is going on with this cousin appearance ~ both Gabby (Abigail) and Laura, who proclaim they are there to stay ~ until their problems are fixed. What problems, Ruthie is uncertain exist? Her sisters, Molly and twins Lydie and Emma, are equally curious at their arrival.

Abigail Stoltfus has another reason for coming to Stoney Ridge. Convenient to put the supposed needs of her uncle's family in the forefront.

I am eager to see the happenings at Stoney Ridge since leaving them in book one! So enjoyed the beginning of this series!

Here's some advice to Abigail in a letter from her mother:

There's no need to over-volunteer facts from the books you read, especially if no one has asked you about them.
--The Quieting, 148

Hmmm.

You will meet Leroy Glick who is saving his bubble-gum wrappers to enter a contest to win a lifetime supply of bubble-gum by finding the winning wrapper. "The Sisters" who live across town, have a little bit of everything you could possibly need from the past ~ their collection.

I like these series by this author for many reasons. Neighbors from previous series pop up, bringing community. An engaging family story of ups-and-downs; similarities in family traits ~ habits awakened when a better way is revealed. The Stoltzfus family is growing and finding their place. I learned many interesting things in the story along with the characters as they discovered them. Truth triumphs ~ humility and forgiveness surface, enriching lives.

"This series began in the Stoney Ridge, Pennsylvania community with The Imposter. More twists and turns are coming to Stoney Ridge after The Quieting—so stay tuned for The Devoted to hit bookshelves in early October. Just in time for autumn reading by a warm fireplace!" ~ author Suzanne Woods Fisher

Second in the Series  May 22, 2016
The Quieting is the second book in The Bishop’s Family series. Reading the first book in the series, The Imposter, is fairly important for understanding the continuing story line in this book.

While I enjoyed reading The Quieting, I actually enjoyed The Imposter a lot more than this book. But, even so, the writing was very good and I was interested in the various relationships and situations that were dealt with in this story. I was glad to see more of David and Birdy, but would have loved more time with Katrina and Andy. I really liked Dane, but did not care for Abigail. I understood and could even laugh at her literal way of dealing with life and people, yet I just could not connect with her. I did enjoy the genealogical research and discoveries that Abigail made and found that portion to be a very interesting part of the story.

Even though The Quieting was not my favorite of the two books so far, it was an overall enjoyable story that does add to the series. I am looking forward to the next book and to seeing how things come together for the various characters that the author has introduced us to.

(3.5 stars)

Beware the Mammi!!  May 3, 2016
David Stoltzfus is in trouble. His family is under attack otherwise called a visit from Mammi and two cousins. Plus, everyone for miles around knows the Stoney Ridge church is divided over the current bishop, whom it is rumored switched the lots.

Helpful and full of advice where neither is desired, Mammi and cousin Abigail in particular not only wreak havoc on the house but decide which relationships should exist while destroying familial ones. And we haven't even mentioned David's love life or the store!!

In a religion where the bishop is to be obeyed without question, what will become of the community as it takes sides between the two preachers?

Pride, justice, deception, interfamily relationships, repentance, redemption, and humility are all themes presented. Also, an important idea is assuming one person's values, opinions,or ways automatically merit more value than those of others. ("Mammi the Meddler" is a prime example here!)

The Quieting, by Suzanne Woods Fisher is a wonderfully challenging and thoughtful novel, second in the Bishop's Family series. I was happy to see the listing of characters in the front of the book, since this was my first Fisher book. I felt no sense of being lost, as Fisher did a great job with providing enough back story to make this story stand on its own. It will be standing in my mind, being mulled over for some time to come!!

I gratefully received this book from the Revellreads program in exchange for an honest review.

Great book of family and community  Apr 26, 2016
The Quieting is the second book in The Bishop Family series, written by Suzanne Woods Fisher. In the first book we meet Pastor David Stoltzfus and his family. In this book we get to catch up with them.

David Stoltzfus is a widower with 4 daughters still at home. David’s sister and mother feel he needs help taking care of his family so his Mother and 2 nieces arrive to help him. His mother and niece have taken over and organized his home and store and take over cooking meals. David is frustrated with this but he also enjoys having good cooked meals once again.

David’s niece, Abigail, helped her father with genealogy projects. She has come to realize she is doing research for one of David’s neighbors, Dane Glick, nephew of Bishop Freeman Glick. She finds out the Glick family history is not what the Glick family wants everyone to believe it is.

David is the minister at the local church and has reported to the ministers that Bishop Freeman Glick has wrongfully made himself Bishop. Bishop Glick also makes accusations again David. This starts an investigation within the church family.

I really like this story. It is the second in the series but it is written in such a way that if you have not read book one, you would have enough background to understand the story. This is a story of family, the love they have for each other, and how they care about each other. I like how the book shows us how the family fellowships together, reading the bible and learning together. I can’t wait for the next book in the series.

I received a copy of this book from Revell and Baker Publishing Group for an honest review.

I give this book a 5.
