Reviews - What do customers think about Short-Straw Bride?

One of My Favorite Novels!  Mar 13, 2015
I love Short-Straw Bride! This is the second time I have read and it was even better reading it this time around!

One of the things I enjoy most about this novel is the attraction that both Travis and Meri have for one another, but neither one of them know it! Theyare both strong and determined in their ways/ideas causing friction between them at times, but as well as a romance to bloom!

I also really like the Archers! Crockett is personally my favorite and I love the way they all come together as family! They stand by one another with a fierce devotion and love while using their gifts to help one another! It's also really interesting to see their different personalities throughout the novel!

Cassie is a great side character and I hope that maybe we will hear more about her later on because she is just so sweet with her under current of determination!

I recommend this novel to anyone who is looking for a good romance with a solid message and strong family ties!

Great humor and faith  Jan 6, 2015
While this is the first book in the Archer Brothers series, it is the last one I have read! That didn't take away from my enjoyment of the book in any way though - in fact, I wondered why I hadn't read it sooner!

Meredith, Travis, the other three Archer brothers, and Meredith's cousin were all great characters whom I enjoyed getting to know. I enjoyed reading about the different family dynamics from the Archer brothers self reliance and focus on family and loyalty to Meredith's missing her parents and living with her complex aunt and uncle and her loving cousin.

Travis and Meredith's connection was very fun to read about. Their attraction was palpable, and the circumstances, events, and communication that went between were the perfect mixture of funny and serious.

I enjoyed the journey that Meredith and Travis traveled in the process of learning to trust in God to work out everything for His good and emphasis on accepting help when we need it, and not blocking everyone else out.

This book made me laugh, cheer, sigh wistfully, and to top it all of it had tense moments where I wondered what would happen next. There is something here for everyone!

her heart has a memory of a long ago day  Nov 15, 2013
No one steps on Archer land. Not if they value their life. But when Meredith Hayes overhears a lethal plot to burn the Archer brothers off their ranch, a twelve-year-old debt compels her to take the risk.

Miss Meri's aunt and uncle have plans for her future, bringing a suitor for her. But... her heart has another memory of a long ago day.

Bear ye one another's burdens,
and so fulfill the law of Christ.
Galatians 6:2

Enter the Archer brothers: Travis, Crockett, Jim and Neill. The recluse ranchers. Meredith risks bringing them a message to save their ranch and, in turn, they take a risk to save her reputation. Because of an accident she is detained at their ranch, followed by her uncle and a preacher.

Which one is the one who wins her heart from all of the Archer brothers, and was it really a draw of the straws? From a young girl, Meredith has received protection and care from one. She has been in his heart. Travis Archer.

Come wedding day and the scent of cinnamon is in the air. Oh, goodness, are they in for a treat, in more than one way! Meredith Hayes Archer has a lot set out before her ~ but knowing Meredith, she will win them all over. As they protect their land and holdings, she opens their hearts to live life as it should be ~ with regard to others.

Come join Meredith as she ventures into the interior of Archer lands and hearts.

I liked the interaction of all of the Archer brothers as they warm up to her winning ways. They have gained a prize in their midst.

Karen Witemeyer is a deacon's wife and mother of three who believes the world needs more happily-ever-afters. To that end, she combines her love of bygone eras with her passion for helping women mature in Christ to craft historical romance novels that lift the spirit and nurture the soul.

After growing up in California, Karen moved to Texas to attend Abilene Christian University where she earned bachelor and master's degrees in Psychology. It was also there that she met and married her own Texas hero. He roped her in good, for she has lived in Texas ever since. In fact, she fell so in love with this rugged land of sweeping sunsets and enduring pioneer spirit, that she incorporates it into the pages of her novels, setting her stories in the small towns of a state that burgeoned into greatness in the mid- to late 1800s.

Karen is living her dream by writing Christian historical romance novels for Bethany House.

Karen is the author of A Tailor-Made Bride, Head in the Clouds, To Win Her Heart, in addition to Short-Straw Bride.

Amazing! One of my favorites!  Jul 29, 2013
I absolutely loved reading this book! I enjoyed it every time I picked it up. The characters were great and I loved their commitment to the ones they love. No matter what consequences might be ahead of them they always did what they knew to be right to help out their families. Not only that but Travis and Meri's commitment to each other was nothing less than what they would give to the others, which I thought was great.

I thought it was really cute how Travis saved Meri when she was 10 years old and she ended up with a crush on him. Then 12 years later they meet up again and she still has the same feelings for him, and he still has the overpowering desire to protect her. And that when they are "forced" to marry each other they both secretly are really happy about the situation.

I liked that even though they both secretly loved each other, they kept the marriage in name only until they knew the other one felt the same way about them. It was really nice watching their relationship grow, and it was funny knowing how much they were attracted to each other and watching them try to control their feelings.

The romance in this book was great. Not only that but I loved how it could be very serious in some parts and then hilarious in others. Also, I liked watching Meri teach Travis to open up to the outside world and to trust in God that everything would be okay. I would definitively recommend this book, and I hope that if you choose to read it you enjoy it as much as I did.

Love the Archer boys!!  Jul 28, 2013
A short-straw Bride pulled me in from the beginning. A story I couldn't put down. What a great job Karen did once again!

A young girl, hurt and needing help on Archer land? No one was allowed on their land. They took special care to ensure that.....until now.

Meredith...a girl that has lost so much, needing love and care...puts herself last to help the Archer boys. Would she be hurt? Allowed on their land? How could she help them?

4 brothers all trying to keep their family together and do what that father gas taught them. Do the trust this girl? Who is against them, who do they believe? Fires, gunshots, lies, learning to trust, 4 straws and 1 bride.

This was honestly my favorite book by Karen. I say this at the end of each one. They all are great and need to be longer. I want to keep reading and following what happens in the characters lives. You laugh and cry with them, root for them and fall in love with each one. Another great story line, different than all the books out there. If you haven't tried one of her books, order it today!

Really enjoyed this book  Jul 23, 2013
This was my first book by this author. While reading this I can only say it made my heart happy. It brought to mind my favorite author who no longer writes. I really enjoyed the story, four brothers who have to figure out who will marry this interfering stranger. Only to have true love blossom. I enjoyed this book so much I went out and bought her other right away. This is truly a wonderful story.

Fabulous Fiction!  Oct 2, 2012
Two hard heads and two stubborn wills in Short-Straw Bride by Karen Witmeyer brings about a fun, light read perfect for a rainy day or a day at the beach read!
Can dreams from the past truly become plans for the present? Meredith or otherwise knows as Meri is confronted by a bully who throws her lunch pail onto Archer land. Archer land! No one goes on Archer land and lives to tell about it! But Meri goes to rescue her lunch pail more afraid of her mother's wrath at not returning with said lunch pail.
She is confronted by Travis Archer on Archer land but he seems kind and gently frees her leg from a steel trap.
A few years go by ... and then Meredith learns of a plot to harm the Archer's and their land. She takes off to warn them and to pay back that long ago debt when Travis rescued her.
She warns the brothers but is kicked in the head by mule and is seriously harmed. The brothers decide to place her in Travis' bedroom, in his bed. When Meredith awakens she is in a strange room but Travis is there. She feels safe. In her stupor she tells him that she dreams of him and he is her hero. Travis is taken aback! But feelings begin to slowly stir in his hardened heart.
A sweet, funny, light read about two young people who long for love but seem to fight it every step of the way!
