Reviews - What do customers think about Paper Hearts: A Novel?

Contemporary romance  Feb 6, 2017
I’m glad I stuck with this one. I didn’t really get into the novel until the end of Chapter 4—short chapters. I’d heard about this book and knew it was rated highly by some of the bloggers I like, so I was sure I’d enjoy it—and I did like it very much. It’s quite an emotional story and I was able to connect with the characters as if they were real people. So, yes, I was completely pulled into the love story of Abigail and Jacob.

One of reasons I enjoyed Paper Hearts so much was the spiritual themes, which play a significant role in the story. I love how the story mirrors real life in that we can see how God always has a best plan and will work things out, if we choose to let Him.

I definitely recommend this book if you like contemporary romance.

Heartwarming Story  Aug 8, 2016
Abigail Pressman loves running her bookstore in the small town of Loves Park. Having basically given up on love, she dedicates her time to running her store and dreams of expanding. When the building that she rents half of the space of goes up for sale, she plans on buying it. But when she is denied the loan she needs to buy the building, the building is sold to Jacob Willoughby, a newcomer in town who plans on turning the whole building into a medical practice - which means Abigail and her bookstore will be kicked out. Meanwhile a group of women who form a group called the Valentine Volunteers recruit Abigail to help them go through letters they receive as part of a tradition in Loves Park, something that Abigail wants nothing to do with. But the Volunteers also convince Abigail not to give up her store without a fight and a way to possibly save her store is found when Abigail discovers a bunch of paper hearts.

Jacob Willoughby moves to Loves Park to get a fresh start for himself and his daughter and to get away from a place with painful memories of the past. He finds the perfect building for his new medical practice, but in order to create the practice he plans, he will need the space of the whole building which means he will have to kick Abigail and her store out. But what he doesn't expect is a group of women fighting to keep Abigail's store open.

With Jacob crushing Abigail's dreams by forcing her to go out of business and with Jacob struggling to forgive himself about something from his past, neither one expected to start having feelings for each other. However, as they cross paths they discover that they might just be falling in love. But then something happens that might change everything.

Paper Hearts is a sweet contemporary romance about two characters who learn to forgive - both each other and themselves, learn to trust in God and His plans for them, and learn what it really means to love.

Some parts of the story were humorous. The first couple pages of the book describing Abigail's reaction to her mom signing her up on a dating website without Abigail's knowing had me laughing from the start. Other parts of the story were sad and heart wrenching as we see the characters dealing with their struggles, pains, and emotions.

I thought the story and idea behind the paper hearts was sweet and unique. I also loved how the story ended.

Overall, Paper Hearts is a heartwarming story that shows that sometimes we need to let go of our broken dreams so that God can lead us to something better. I would be interested in reading more books written by Courtney Walsh in the future.

Can't put it down  Apr 8, 2016
Paper Hearts by Courtney Walsh

This book was a very pleasant surprise in the fact that I thought it would be light and "fluffy" type of romantic novel but it turned out to be so much more.

This book covers several storylines and has well developed characters with lives spent trying to look forward while tied to the past. Only after truly giving their hearts to the Lord for guidance do they see what is right in front of their faces. This is a small town atmosphere (with the exception of a nasty city chick) who we love to "dislike." Everyone knows everything about everybody but there are still a few secrets to go around, especially at the local coffee hangout which is Abigail's bookstore. The local matchmakers called the "Valentine Volunteers" have decided to make Abigail the focus of their efforts to assist Abby's mom in finding her a match. There are fun tangles and deep thought moments. You will love this book! Get comfy with a fave beverage, you won't need a bookmark as you will not want to put it down.

Thank you to the author and publisher for the copy of this book I received through The Book Club Network (bookfun.org) in exchange for my honest review.

The Greatness of Love  May 15, 2015
Paper Hearts is a romance story between two very broken people. Abigail Pressman, who is unlucky in love and now about to lose her business to Dr. Jacob Willoughby, who is a widower with a daughter he is trying to raise and to protect. Growing up in a broken home, Abigail holds on to the one thing her father left for her and that is his book store business. Jacob is a doctor who has just moved into town, trying to escape the secret that he carries concerning his late wife and he intends to open his new medical building in the same building Abigail’s book store is. Starting off on the wrong foot, both are having a hard time of letting go of the past and moving on.
Living in a town called Loves Park in which her great, great grandparents are the town founders, Abigail longs for the fairy tale love story. Until Abigail finds a set of paper hearts that a husband and wife have been writing to each other throughout the year. Wanting to know more about their love story and commitment, Abigail finds out this is their eighth year in writing them and sending them to the town. Unfortunately, when more paper hearts are found and then sent, they hint of a tragedy for this couple. After reading the paper hearts, she realizes more about love than she ever thought possible. She no longer wants the fairy tale, but the long lasting love she has been reading about. However, through a series of events: the town finds out about the paper hearts, sides are drawn between Abigail and Jacob, a quirky group of ladies called the Valentine Volunteers try to fix Abigail’s love life, and her mother pushing her to get married, Abigail decides not to hate Jacob after all. In all of this, Abigail is changing and realizing that maybe her dreams were what was holding her back the whole time. When she decides to let go will she be ready for what is awaiting her? I enjoyed this bitter sweet, old fashioned love story that dealt with the deepness of love instead of the superficial. I received this book for an honest review from The Book Club Network, Inc. (TBCN) and the opinions are my own.

Letting go so God can guide your way  Apr 6, 2015
What a beautiful story of two people with broken pieces in their past, finding their way to healing. Woven throughout the story is the lesson of learning to let go of OUR vision and letting God show us HIS vision for our life. It is such a hard lesson – most of us let go for a time and then yank control back from God because we think we know best – only to learn that is isn’t until we fully let go of our plan that we find true happiness and contentment.
Abigail and Jacob’s story is told in small pieces which keeps you reading and hoping for a happy ending. There is lots of “real life” spread through the story. Life is full of ups and downs for all of us. All the characters in this small town are captivating and remind us that you shouldn’t judge someone by the parts of them they show in public, but that you need to really get to know someone and understand their history before you can see the whole person.
The idea of the paper hearts is such a wonderful idea – I love to think about all the people in all the states starting their own paper hearts as this story is shared. I received this book from BookFun.org in exchange for my honest review.

Secrets and love  Mar 12, 2015
Abigail Pressman has been asked to work with the Volunteers, a group who loves to carry on matchmaking ideas while in her store. While trying not to get too involved with the group her new landlord wants to end her lease on her store. The problem is that she is trying to ignore her feelings for him which keep growing. Abigail decides to string hearts in her store. These quickly become famous overnight. As time goes on Abigail starts to believe that Jacob, her landlord is keeping secrets from her. Are the secrets bad enough to keep them apart forever? I give this book a 4/5. I was given this book for the purpose of a review and all opinions are my own.

Dreams can be changed for the better  Mar 6, 2015
This was such a sweet story with lessons in it for us all. It reminded me of the verse in Ephesians
( chapter 3, verse 20 ) Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine.... Our dreams, what we think we want, is sometimes not what's best for us. God has plans that are much better than we can ever imagine.
Courtney Walsh also reminded us through her story that not only is it important to forgive others but it is also important that we forgive ourselves.
Two wonderful lessons that the main characters, Abigail Pressman and Jacob Willoughby learned, although it took them a while.
The small town of Loves Park where they lived was such a wonderful mixture of delightful characters who all pulled together for each other. It's a place where I'd like to visit or even live if it was a real place. Abigail owned a bookstore/coffee shop in a rented space that was bought out by a young doctor planning to turn the whole building into a medical clinic, including Abigail's store. Her dreams were being crushed and the sparks began to fly. A group of older ladies get into the mix trying to help Abigail and this adds to the quirkiness. When paper hearts begin showing up with sentiments written by an anonymous couple to each other, Abigail begins wondering who are they and why do they send them to Loves Park through the post office? I loved the characters so much that I only hope there are more stories to be written in the future by this author about the residents of Loves Park.
Grab you a cup of coffee and this book and find a comfortable spot in which to relax and read. You won't be disappointed!
I received this book from the publisher through Bookfun.org for my honest review, which I have given.

Great book! I laughed out loud!  Feb 28, 2015
Paper Hearts was the first book I have read by Courtney Walsh. I really enjoyed her style. It was fun getting to know Abigail and Jacob, and everyone else in the town of Love’s Park. I think we could all relate to Abigail in lots of different ways. She had her own style, and was insecure about her looks. She had family drama, and was always trying to win her mom’s approval. Abigail had a dream of expanding her father’s bookstore and she couldn’t wait to make it happen. The only problem was finding the money. When her landlady decides to sell there is nothing Abigail can do but deal with her new landlord. Jacob is handsome and has his own plans for the building. Can Abigail show Jacob how important her little shop is to the town before it’s too late? After she gets roped into being part of a volunteer group she can’t help but start believing in love again. Were Jacob and Abigail made for each other? Or will the building stand in their way? Take a little trip to Love’s Park to find love and friendship in the most unlikely places.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys some good old fashioned romance with some surprises mixed in. I laughed out loud and Walsh brought tears to my eyes other times. You will really enjoy this book, I know I did. I received a copy of this book from Tyndale Fiction in exchange for my honest opinion. All opinions expressed are my own.

Romantic read with depth.  Feb 19, 2015
I loved the cover of this book, and the story didn't disappoint! I'm not a huge fan of contemporary romance, but I must admit I fell in love with this read. The biggest reason why is because the focus wasn't the romance. This book went so much deeper. Each character had problems with which they were struggling. I loved Abigail Pressman. Her character creeps right into the readers heart. I could so identify with her wanting to follow her dreams, yet still trying to figure out what they are. This book will make you laugh and make you cry. The characters in this story seem so real, the plot is much deeper than I expected, and the ending will thrill. This was my first read by Courtney Walsh, but I don't expect it to be my last. I'm not a romantic reader, but this book had much more to offer than that. I highly recommend this read. I was given this book through bookfun.org for my honest opinion which I have given.

Heartwarming!  Feb 18, 2015
I was immediately drawn to this book and knew it would be a story I would love. The adorable cover captured my attention first and then I watched the book trailer and it sealed the deal. Love it! I knew Paper Hearts was a must-read for me and I wasn’t disappointed.

Paper Hearts is a heartwarming story and a sigh-worthy romance! I loved the charm of the small town of Loves Park, Colorado, and its colorful residents. I also enjoyed the Valentine Volunteers and their matchmaking efforts. With endearing characters, an enchanting storyline, and a lovely Valentine tradition, Paper Hearts captured my heart and left me grinning from ear to ear! I highly recommend this book to fans of contemporary romance and can’t wait to read more from Courtney Walsh.

I received a complimentary copy of this book through The Book Club Network. All thoughts expressed in this review are my own.

This Book Touched My Heart!  Feb 9, 2015
Paper Hearts is the first book I've read by Courtney Walsh and I'm so glad I found this author! I read late into the night and finished the book in one day! I enjoyed it so much that I did not want to put it down!

Abigail Pressman has been running The Book Nook, a store which she inherited from her father. The book store is her entire world. Deeply hurt by lost love in the past, Abigail has come to the conclusion that being a single woman with a book shop is all she needs in life. However, being single in the town of Loves Park is considered to be quite a problem. Her mother is constantly trying to play matchmaker and has recruited the Valentine Volunteers to assist in finding a man for Abigail. This diverse, and often eccentric, group of ladies meet at The Book Nook on a regular basis, stamping mail with the Loves Park postmark and planning romantic events. Abigail is unwillingly made a member of the group. She does not care about romance and the only dream she has is to expand her shop. Her landlord is retiring and has offered the building to Abigail, who is thrilled that she is about to realize her dream!

While Abigail is trying to get a loan to purchase the building, a new doctor arrives in town. He wants the building for his medical practice, has the cash to pay for it, and destroys all that Abigail has hoped for. Jacob Willoughby is a handsome single dad who's focus is on providing a secure and happy future for his young daughter. He is a man trying to escape a traumatic past and wishing to start a new life in a new town. Jacob's business partner, Kelly, insists that he needs to break Abigail's lease and get rid of The Book Nook in order to expand his practice. Kelly is ruthless, but Jacob is not quite comfortable with destroying someone else's life. He knows all to well the heartache of shattered dreams. Yet, his daughter's security is his primary focus and he moves forward with the plan to be rid of Abigail and her shop.

The Valentine Volunteers conspire to make Jacob miserable and to rally the town of Loves Park behind Abigail. But how? Abigail gets a new breath of life when she discovers love notes among the Valentine mail. The notes are written on paper hearts by a couple who has a tradition of sending the hearts to Loves Park each year in order to share their joy. Abigail hangs up the hearts in her store and people flock there in order to add their own love notes to the collection.

Will the paper hearts renew Abigail's faith in love? Will she ever find a man who is a good fit? Can she save her store and her dream? Could Jacob become an ally instead of an enemy? Is there a chance that he will find peace and renewed faith in Loves Park? It all seems to be impossible, but with God's direction lives can be changed. The theme of forgiveness is strong in this book. I found the story to be deeply touching and I highly recommend reading Paper Hearts!

I received a copy of this book from the publisher, through The Book Club Network (bookfun.org) in exchange for my honest review.

Valentine's Day Everyday  Feb 8, 2015
I loved reading this fun Christian romance book with a little bit of a mystery. This novel is easy to read but hard to put down. I loved the setting for this story and wish that there was a real Love Park town.

Abigail owns a bookstore in a building that is sold to a Dr. Jacob who wants to open a new practice and take over Abigail's space in a small town called Love Park. Abigail is recruited to help some of the women in the town read letters that come in for Valentine's Day and stamping them with the town's seal, a town tradition. Abigail starts reading a particular set of heart shaped letters from the same person over a number of years and tries to figure out the author of them. Meanwhile, she starts spending more time with the Jacob the doctor and slowly learns about his past that he is running from. Both characters are looking for someone to write their paper hearts too.

I look forward to reading other books by Courtney Walsh. I received this book from bookfun.org in return for my honest opinion.

Fun and enjoyable!  Feb 7, 2015
What a fun and enjoyable book! I loved the idea of writing paper hearts to my sweetheart during the year – especially to keep myself from saying something I shouldn’t!

Abigail runs a bookstore in the town of Loves Park, where Valentine’s Day is almost their biggest holiday. Unfortunately, she is single. But when her store’s existence is threatened by the new building owner, she’s not sure if she should run him out of town or run into his arms.
This is a wonderfully romantic book, just in time for Valentine’s Day, as both the girl and the guy have difficult obstacles to overcome but seek God as they do. I found myself rooting for them and hoping that Kelly, the nasty wanna-be seductress, would get out of the picture!

This was such a great book – I didn’t want it to end! I highly recommend it – and the trailer for it too! I received this book from bookfun.org in return for my honest opinion.

Romance Through Forgiveness  Feb 5, 2015
“The paper hearts had already started doing their job. It was exactly what she’d been searching for – a way to heighten interest in her store – yet Abigail would’ve never thought to hang them up in the store on her own. Not those hearts. Not that story,” Courtney Walsh writes in her novel, "Paper Hearts."

This four hundred and fifteen page paperback targets those who enjoy Christian contemporary romance. With no profanity or sexual scenes, topics of illness and death may not be appropriate for immature readers. The book includes a note from the author, acknowledgments, the author’s biography, and ten discussion questions. Using the New Living Translation of the Holy Bible, the book does not capitalize pronouns of God.

Author Walsh is also an artist and playwright who lives in Illinois with her husband and children. This is her fourth novel.

Loves Park near Denver, Colorado, has always been known for love and romance, but twenty-nine-year-old Abigail Pressman has not found it in the small haven. Having a broken heart from a past relationship, she dedicates her passion to being the owner the past seven years of The Book Nook, a quaint store strategically placed in the perfect part of town.

As her landlord sells the business to out-of-towner Jacob Willoughby, her world is turned upside down as her dreams of buying the building and expanding dissolve when she is told Jacob wants to renovate the entire building for his medical practice.

Hurting, angry, and wounded, the attractive-looking Jacob wants desperately to move on from the past, hoping to reignite his passion for helping people and make a new home for his six-year-old daughter, Junie.

With the interference of Jacob’s office manager, Abigal’s match-making mother, the town’s nosey Valentine Volunteers, and Jacob’s outgoing sister, the book store owner has to decide what she wants in life as she seeks good in the worst possible situation. Tied to the area’s family roots, she is captivated when she receives eight years of paper hearts by an unknown romantic couple, eagerly wishing she could obtain such a love.

Although the tale is predictable romantically, several of the book’s characters’ lives are hung in the balance, leaving ample room for a sequel. Focusing on forgiving others, self, and most importantly, God, the read is lovingly emotional, yet heart-breaking.

Rating: 4.5 of 5 stars

A new Valentine's Day tradition...  Feb 1, 2015
SUMMARY:
Having romantic grandparents who named the town “Love’s Park”, Abigail Pressman just knows she has to find Mr. Right soon. With the help of the Valentine Volunteers (aka Loves Park Meat Market Matchmaking Guild), she is truly feeling the pressure. When Abigail’s store, The Book Nook, has its building threatened to be sold to an attractive new landlord, she is inspired to string anonymous paper hearts throughout her store; however, when new hearts are delivered, she realizes there may be more involved than just the paper hearts. Will Abigail need to decide between her heart and her business?

A PENNY FOR MY THOUGHTS:
Just in time for Valentine’s Day, Paper Hearts is a sweet story filled with hope, love, inspiration, forgiveness and heartache. I was drawn to the book by the cover, enjoyed the premise, encountered a few surprises and sighed at the end. I chuckled quite often at the antics of the Valentine Volunteers- quite the group of characters! A new author for me, I will definitely watch for Courtney Walsh’s books again while making room for this one on my bookshelf…it may just become a Valentine’s Day tradition.

RATING:
4 (out of 5) pennies
