Overview
Discusses the recent popular trend of young adults leaving the organized Christian church in order to find their own connection to Jesus Christ, and helps guide readers in practicing their faith without religious institutions.

Publishers Description
Have you left the church in search of Jesus?
Studies show that one in four young adults claim no formal religious affiliation, and church leaders have long known that this generation is largely missing on Sunday morning. Hundreds of thousands of "church leavers" have had a mentor and pastor, however, in Michael Spencer, known to blog readers as the Internet Monk. Spencer guided a vast online congregation in its search for a more honest and more immediate practice of Christian faith.
Spencer discovered the truth that church officials often miss, which is that many who leave the church do so in an attempt to find Jesus. For years on his blog Spencer showed de-churched readers how to practice their faith without the distractions of religious institutions. Sadly, he died in 2010. But now that his last message is available in "Mere Churchianity," you can benefit from the biblical wisdom and compassionate teaching that always have been hallmarks of his ministry.
With "Mere Churchianity," Spencer's writing will continue to point the disenchanted and dispossessed to a Jesus-shaped spirituality. And along the way, his teachings show how you can find others who will go with you on the journey.

Reviews - What do customers think about Mere Churchianity?

Just   Feb 16, 2011
Mere Churchianity was a book I picked up with bias for the church and against some of it's commonly accepted practices. I was also biased for the Biblical model as well as with the trepidation that I would simply be reading a radical anti-church as a whole, book. But…as I read it I realized it wasn’t quite what I was expecting. It was indeed against much of the church as a whole, but, not simply because it was the church. Michael Spencer’s bone to pick with the church was it’s church shaped—not Jesus shaped spirituality. The lack of Jesus behind the churches’ doors and simply a church and what they say. He believes that this is the case with a majority of churches and as such believers are walking away from the church in search of God. If the book had stopped there---and I almost did, it would have been a disappointment. He filled much of the first part of the book with what I consider burned out Christian rhetoric. However, the book beefed up as it drove toward the finish line and added some solid issues that I knew were on target with church problems. He started with the address of hearts of his readers, some of their insecurities and legitimate pains. And finished with trying to show that Jesus shaped spirituality was the way to go. There were quite a few things in the book I disagreed with, however---he did have some good points. I’d recommend the read with a grain of salt. A little humorous note: Mr. Spencer made the comment that millions of copies of books like, "The Purpose Driven Life" and other books on how to truly know God are sold based on people feeling the church with a God vacuum of nothingness. I agree somewhat, however--his book will sell on the same premise ;)

Christian Discipleship Set Free of Institutionalized Christianity  Jun 3, 2010
This is one of the best and most challenging books on Christian discipleship I have read. If you have (or have nearly) burned out on "church," or if you have suffered emotional or spiritual abuse at the hands of those who put church before Jesus, this is for you. If you have walked out on the church, but still look for some connection to Jesus, this is for you. Michael Spencer gives no pretense, no bull, and no judging people as second class citizens to a perceived spiritual in-crowd. He simply offers Jesus and his invitation to life and fellowship.

While some time is spent calling out the problems with institutional Christianity, especially his own American Evangelicalism, that is far from the focus of the book. Nor does Michael hold himself out as some kind of guru making empty promises. Instead, he calls all to stop looking to the circuses and power plays used to guide or coerce people into loyalty to man-made institutions, and points them to Jesus. Mere Churchianity expands what Michael Spencer meant when he said, "If you are going to think about God, go to Jesus and start there, stay there and end there."

Though Michael died in April 2010, his first and only book serves to share the message he was getting at through ten years of writing at [...]. I recommend it without reservation to anyone who has even a passing interest in Jesus or Christianity.
