Overview
When a storm ends, the search for answers begins. A milestone debut novel opens with a blast and never lets up as it introduces everyday characters who are wrestling with the questions: where is God when bad things happen? And does God ignore the prayers of the faithful?

Publishers Description

When facing the impossible, will you believe?

Storm clouds gather over a small Michigan town. As thunder shakes the sky, the lights inside St. Thomas Church flicker . . . and then go out.

All is black until a thick bolt of lightning slices the sky, striking the church's large wooden cross--leaving it ablaze and splintered in two.

When the storm ends--the search for answers begins.

James Lindy, the church's blind minister, wonders how his small congregation can repair the cross and keep their faith in the midst of adversity. And he hears the words "only believe."

Macey Lewis, the town's brilliant young oncologist, is drawn to Alex, a young boy who's recently been diagnosed with an aggressive leukemia. She puts her hope in modern medicine--yet is challenged to "only believe."

And Alex's single mom, who has given everything she can to her boy, is pleading with God to know the reason this is happening . . . to save her son. But she only hears silence and wonders how she can possibly "only believe."

"The Reason" is a milestone debut novel, opening with a thunderbolt and never letting up as it introduces us to everyday characters who are wrestling with the questions: Where is God when bad things happen? And does God ignore the prayers of the faithful? The answer each character receives will astound readers while offering an unforgettable call to hope, to change, to . . . only believe.

"This is a skillfully written first novel with the narrative voice, knack for dialogue, and plot movement of a veteran author." --"Publishers Weekly"

Reviews - What do customers think about Reason: A Novel?

Fantastic Book!  Jun 15, 2014
This book begins with the cross of a small town church being destroyed by lightning. I was quickly captivated by the characters – a single mom, her adorable little boy, the blind pastor and his wife, their gentle giant mentally challenged son, 3 medical personnel, and one miracle performing carpenter. The characters seemed so real and William Sirls has woven an incredible story, almost a modern What Would Jesus Do? As I read I wondered if I would have the faith that the characters in the story have, especially as the pasts of several characters are reveled and the circumstances of some get harder.
What an amazing book! “Only Believe” is the theme that runs throughout it – believe in the miracles that God can perform when we believe. I loved this book and look forward to reading more by William Sirls. I highly recommend it - I couldn’t put it down until I finished it! I received this book from TBCN in return for my honest opinion.

Masterful Debut Novel  May 27, 2014
William Sirls has masterfully penned his debut novel, The Reason. Be prepared for laughter and tears. Extraordinary, surprising and amazing are just three adjectives that are not even adequate to begin describing Sirls' first novel.

I normally do not give out 5 star ratings. I feel the book has to be profound and make a huge impact on me to get 5 stars; otherwise, the 5 stars become meaningless as a tool. The Reason rates its 5 stars.

The Reason begins with a storm that destroys the cross in front of St. Thomas, a small-impoverished church in Michigan. From there the story never lets you go.

James Lindy is the church's minister. He is blind and along with his wife, Shirley, he helps care for their mute and physically challenged adult son, Charlie.

Brooke Thomas and Alex, her son, were "adopted" by the Lindy's.

After a providential meeting with Brooke, Dr. Macey Lewis, oncologist at East Shore Hospital, volunteers to spearhead a group to repair the cross.

After church one Sunday, the group assembles to repair the cross. During the process, one of the men is slightly injured. He walks down the hill, to the home of the pastor, where the women are gathered.

Kenneth, a carpenter working on the addition at East Shore Hospital, miraculously repairs the cross while the man is gone.

The only "witnesses" to the repair are Jim, who is blind, and Charlie, who is mute. How did Kenneth repair a completely destroyed wooden cross with no help? And why does Kenneth exhort everyone to "Only Believe?"

The Reason will test your faith, open your eyes and leave you marveling at God's ability.

I received this book from http://www.bookfun.org/ in exchange for an honest review.

Heart Warming, Love, Faith, I need tissue  May 18, 2014
This is William Sirls debut novel and his personal life is reflected in this book and his faith in God shows. He became a Christian while serving time. His message throughout the book is about "Only Believe". You may think this starts a little slow but once you start reading you will that it doesn't - just setting the stage. You will feel like the characters are your friends.

This book about a small church in a town in Michigan. James Lindy, the pastor, is blind. His son is a very large young man that can't speak and loves everyone. Then a storm strikes their community and the lightening splits the cross in the front of the church down the center. James and his wife Shirley have also taken in a young, single mother with a five year old. When they meet Macey Lewis, an oncologist, and her friends from the hospital, they want to try to repair the cross for the church that didn't have any insurance. Macey meets a young carpenter at the hospital and he volunteers to help repair the cross. The only one that sees him repair the cross like new is Charlie, son of the pastor. He is visibly shaken but can't explain to anyone what happened. Whenever the carpenter is around strange things start happening. He tells the pastor to tell others to "Only Believe". The story in this book is heart warming, you will need a tissue before you are done. There is a growing of faith, love, forgiveness and learning to lean on Jesus.

This is not a critique of anything wrong, I just found the book to be slow in some places and seemed to be repetitive. However, for a debut novel, I think the author did a beautiful job with the storyline and William Sirl's faith shines through the pages of this book. He has other books but I think this is a debut novel in fiction. If I'm wrong, then I apologize to the author and the readers of this review. I did enjoy the book and looking forward to reading his next book.

I received this book from the author and www.bookfun.org (Book Club Network) to read and review this book. All opinions are my own. If you want a heart warming story to read, this is the one for you. Its an easy read and you will love the characters.

Only Believe!  May 16, 2014
The Reason, the first published novel by William Sirls, is phenomenally amazing. I find it a challenge to put into words the way this novel reaches into the heart of the reader and compels from the beginning. Its messages speak to one’s heart gently, yet with all the intensity of the lightning that split the cross at St. Thomas Church and set it afire.
Pastor James Lindy, eyes blinded by disease, has a heart of wisdom and gift of discernment that aids him in caring for those in his church and home. His family includes Shirley, his wife of many years, and their son Charlie, a gentle giant of a man, who is mute and developmentally disabled. Pastor Lindy’s extended family includes Brooke, a young single mother who was in need of a home along with Alex, her five year old son.
After an unusually harsh thunderstorm in which lightning struck and splintered the huge cross on the church grounds, a group of church members and volunteers from the local hospital plan to repair the cross if at all possible after a Sunday service. The volunteers include a young man named Kenneth who is a carpenter working at the expansion of East Shore Community Hospital. With only James and his mute son Charlie present, Kenneth repairs the demolished cross to perfect condition in a matter of seconds, stunning the volunteers who had been gathered in the house with Shirley.
Inexplicable miracles begin to occur within the community. Those who spend any amount of time around Kenneth know that there is something different about him. That includes a young lady whose heart he seems to see directly into, knowing everything, including the shame and pain that she hides from everyone. It also includes Pastor James, Charlie, and others who take his challenge – “only believe” – seriously. Others mull over the individual challenges Kenneth offers them.
Then what seems to be the worst happens – young Alex is diagnosed with leukemia – and as treatments are determined and begun, Brooke’s questions echo those that have been around since the fall of man. Where is God…why my only child…. “Only believe” sounds so simple until the diagnosis is made.
Mr. Sirls has been silent, coming to know that God is truly God – the God of love, of grace, and of second chances. The circumstances that brought him to an incredible relationship with the Lord are nothing short of a miracle in disguise, a miracle that showed him the reason. If you read one Christian novel this year that demonstrates the potential every church community has for God’s supernatural work, make this your choice. It is written with the excellence and assurance of a man who knows his Lord and Savior and what He can do. If you miss The Reason, you could miss the challenge of your personal gift if you will only believe.
I received a copy of this book through the “For Readers Only” group at The Book Club Network, in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.

"Only Believe"  May 12, 2014
This is a powerful story, full of the drama that everyday life brings to all of us. The characters are very different from each other, yet, are drawn together by a single visitor to their town. The lessons he teaches each of them are profound and personal. As I read further and further I felt my own faith being challenged and then renewed. We only need to believe to find the answers – not always the answer we think we already know, but the true answer – God’s answer. I recommend this book to anyone that has the courage to look at your own faith through other people’s lives and take the leap forward to “only believe”

a fabulous book about   Mar 22, 2014
I finished reading The Sinners' Garden, by William Sirls, and I was amazed by the story. I decided to read the first novel, The Reason. I was not disappointed. It is a story that is engrossing as it is inspiring. If you are a person who has wondered "why do bad things happen to good people,"then I would recommend this book. It has a Christian theme and message for everyone. Thank you Mr. Sirls for an excellent novel.

The Reason  Jan 15, 2014
Phenomenal is one word I’m using to describe this absolutely stellar first novel by William Sirls. What a debut! This is a contemporary fictional account, but the hope it offers is very real. The story is set in the small town of Carlson, Michigan. There are several characters involved in the storyline, but their stories are all weaved together to form the main plot. I don’t have enough space to give a synopsis of each character’s current status in life, but suffice it to say some are unbelievers in God, others I’ll call fence-straddlers and others who believe wholeheartedly. Each character experiences meeting the carpenter named Kenneth. He shares with them some difficult truths, but also encourages them to only believe. As some struggle with the past, others worry about the future. Kenneth knows intimate things about each character and they wonder exactly who he really is and what his purpose is. The journeys toward newfound faith or the strengthening of an existing faith are written extremely well and the characters are so easy to identify with to any reader. As one journey ends, a few are left asking why they were led astray. Were they really only to believe just to have the rug pulled out from under them? What would God’s reason be for doing this? This story shows the great love God has for His children, His compassion and His mercy. This book will evoke many strong emotions from readers if they will allow it too. God has worked powerfully through this author. The story offers to those who believe in God a picture of his all-encompassing love. The author shares from his personal experience of the highs and lows of life through different aspects of certain characters. I highly recommend this book and encourage readers to look for God’s personal message to each of them through this novel. I’ll be reading and reviewing this author’s latest book, The Sinners’ Garden, soon so stay tuned on how I rate that one!

Can you Believe?  Sep 13, 2013
Only Believe. Can you do that?

I know that I often have moments in life that I struggle with only believing, with faith even the size of a mustard seed. And I have not suffered as the characters in this novel or gone through trials such as the author, William Sirls has.

At first, I will admit, that I thought this book came across as preachy. I started to get angry through the first chapters, feeling that Sirls was judging me, that he needed to step back. And then I realized that it was I who needed to do so. I had become offended because he wrote the truth, and it upsets me that I was. I was about a fourth of the way through when I realized this, and I am glad that God did not let me stay in my bad opinion.

Sirls is a truly great writer. Once I got over my anger, I realized that a lot of what I had been upset about, I had heard before. I kept telling myself that Sirls was exaggerating peoples' opinions and assertions, until I actually thought about it and realized that I know people in my own life who feel this way. I have felt this way and that was why I had reacted negatively to this story, a mirror of my own heart.

I also loved Sirls portrayal of Alex. He actually acts like a kid. So often I read novels where children act and think like adults with more energy. They don't. They see the world so much differently than we do and they exaggerate everything they see. Alex was a true child.

The only reason I do not give this book 5 stars is because there were scenes that were slow. It was mostly because of the amount of description. I tend to prefer stories with minimal description, so that I can paint my own picture and the scenes move faster. So it was a personal preference, not a true weakness.
