Overview
In the Amish town of Sugarcreek, love comes in many forms. But will it come at all for Miriam? Miriam Zehr has worked at the Sugarcreek Inn longer than she cares to admit. The restaurant is a favorite of town residents as well as the many tourists who come to taste the famous Amish fare. Though she always tries to have a smile for every customer, deep down Miriam knows something's missing: a family of her own. Miriam has never felt particularly beautiful, especially because she's always been a bit heavier than other girls her age. When Junior, the man she's pined for all her life, suddenly seeks her out, she's thrilled to be noticed . . . until she realizes he's only asking her to help get the attention of Mary Kathryn Hershberger, her pretty friend. If Miriam helps Junior court Mary Kathryn, she'll get to spend a lot of time with him, but she might lose him in the process. Are these few stolen moments worth a lifetime of sacrifice? Is Miriam right to even hope for the life she dreams of?

More About Shelley Shepard Gray

I grew up in Houston, Texas, went to Colorado for college, and after living in Arizona, Dallas, and Denver, we moved to southern Ohio about ten years ago.

I’ve always thought of myself as a very hard worker, but not ‘great’ at anything. I’ve obtained a bachelor’s and master’s degree…but I never was a gifted student. I took years of ballet and dance, but I never was anywhere near the star of any recital. I love to cook, but I’m certainly not close to being gourmet…and finally I love to write books, but I’ve certainly read far better authors.

Maybe you are a little bit like me. I’ve been married for almost twenty years and have raised two kids. I try to exercise but really should put on my tennis shoes a whole lot more. I’m not a great housekeeper, I hate to drive in the snow, and I don’t think I’ve ever won a Monopoly game. However, I am the best wife and mother I know how to be.

Isn’t it wonderful to know that in God’s eyes that is okay? That from His point of view, we are all exceptional? I treasure that knowledge and am always so thankful for my faith. His faith in me makes me stand a little straighter, smile a little bit more, and be so very grateful for every gift He’s given me.

I started writing about the Amish because their way of life appealed to me. I wanted to write stories about regular. likeable people in extraordinary situations-and who just happened to be Amish.

Getting the opportunity to write Inspirational novels is truly gratifying. With every book, I feel my faith grows stronger. And that makes me feel very special indeed.

Reviews - What do customers think about Hopeful: Return to Sugarcreek, Book One?

Good Story & Interesting Characters  Aug 2, 2014
I have really enjoyed the novels by Shelley Shepard Gray that I have read in the past, and Hopeful was no exception. I find her writing style very easy to read. She always draws me in right from the beginning and I end up reading her books very quickly.

Hopeful was a really good book with lots of characters. It is the first in the Return to Sugarcreek series. I have not read the series that came before this one, but plan to now. I enjoyed that there were two storylines going on in the book, a major one and a minor one.

I really liked the main character, Miriam, and felt a lot of hurt with her as she persevered throughout the story. Junior was not my favorite main character, as he was so blinded to Miriam for awhile. However, he was a good man and I could recognize that in the story. He just needed to open his eyes to the gift God was giving him in Miriam.

I definitely recommend this book to fans of Amish fiction.

absolutely great  Mar 7, 2014
It seems that no matter our age and circumstance, most young girls, especially those of us that have grown up in homes teaching Christian virtues, do not see themselves as having any beauty, and yet look on their peers as having more than they do. Miriam is a typical young girl in this way. It does not help the situation when the young men, in looking for someone to marry judge others also by this criteria, and thus the conflict. The novel Hopeful reminds us all that not only is beauty only skin deep, it is also in the eye of the beholder.
Shelley has the talent to bring her novels to the reader in such a way that we feel like we see life through the main characters, and the scenes come alive in her choice of vivid images. This novel is the first one in the Return to Sugarcreek, and I look forward to the next one continuing the saga of those I met this time.

I received this book free from Amy and Chris at Litfuse Publicity Group and HarperCollins Publishers in exchange for an honest review. A positive critique was not required. The opinions are my own.

Hope Persists!  Feb 17, 2014
The characterizations throughout Hopeful represent many personality types, covering a broad spectrum. Miriam is a comforter, saddened by the fact that she is still single, but finds comfort in helping others. Junior is mature beyond his years, having been the father/mother figure for his numerous siblings since both parents died. Mary Kate is a newcomer to the community of Sugarcreek, and harbors secrets from a past tainted relationship. Her past admirer is overbearing and devious. As these characters intermingle throughout this story disappointment and anguish create depression and unhappiness, but hope is what inspires them to continue moving forward.

The author has revealed a complex set of relationships throughout this book, and has created a realistic depiction of disappointment, heartbreak, compassion and an underlying hope that life will somehow become more satisfying and joyous. Family is an important element throughout, evidenced by a young couple who recently discovered they cannot have children of their own, as well as others seeking companionship and a life shared with someone they can love and honor. The Amish way of life is woven throughout this book, creating a community of people who share the same beliefs and expectations that we've come to respect through these examples. I enjoyed the interactions between the diverse characters in this story, and look forward to the sequels in this series.

Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book from LitFuse Publicity Group in exchange for my honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.

An Awesome Book  Feb 4, 2014
Hopeful is a great book. It is the first book in the Return to Sugarcreek series. I found it difficult to put the book down. I loved the fact that Miriam continued to be herself even though it hurt. Characters with heartaches and problems worked through them and found hope at the end. I cannot wait to read the next book in this series.
