Item description for Activate: An Entirely New Approach to Small Groups by Nelson Searcy & Kerrick Thomas... Debunk the myths about small groups and find out the truth!
Church leaders want to know how to make small groups work for their church communities, yet a quick look around shows that while small groups are all the rage, much of the time they create more problems than they solve. Nelson Searcy and Kerrick Thomas, founding pastors of The Journey Church in the heart of New York City, suggest that this failure is due to widely held beliefs about small groups that just aren?t true?and they aim to debunk the myths and set the record straight! Drawing from the startling success of small groups at The Journey Church (which has had over 100-percent participation in small groups for more than 4 years) Searcy and Thomas show how church leaders can implement a life-changing small-group ministry that gets the maximum number of people involved and solves many of the important (yet irritating) problems facing churches of all sizes.

 | The book to buy if just buying 1 Apr 19, 2010 |
| I found this book to be the most thorough of the many I read while writing a book myself on chronic illness small groups. It walks the reader through many logistics and covers some steps which may seem obvious after reading it, but which may have been forgotten otherwise. If I had to choose just 1 book to help me in starting a small group I'd want this one! | | | | Get it and grow Apr 14, 2010 |
Our church is transitioning into a church of small groups. We have been studying the process for over six months and were not encouraged. It seems that all of the methods out there were too burdensome and required a large resource pool. This book is different. This is a workable and doable format to institute change. Our team had been reading the other books and were just overwhelmed by the complexities. This book has been received with great joy and enthusiasm. I would recommend this book and a companion book named FUSION Fusion: Turning First-Time Guests into Fully-Engaged Members of Your Church to any church looking to transition to a small group based ministry. | | | | A must read for anyone over small groups. Feb 5, 2010 |
This book is thought provoking in all the right ways. The 12 ideas in the first half of the book help you to evaluate your current system against a culturally relevant philosophy. The second half of the book provides the nuts and bolts of how to implement them so it is extremely practical.
It provides the opportunity to build upon your small group system and take it to a whole new level.
It helped us identify roadblocks to growth and redefine small groups. We're now able to see a whole new door of opportunity we'd been missing. Opportunities our people have been begging for and needing, but we'd ruled out because they didn't fit within our former definitions of small groups.
More importantly it helped us set the Holy Spirit free to disciple His people however and whenever He desires. By taking our small groups out of our former box, we have in essence freed the Holy Spirit. I like this book and the changes it caused in our small group system.
We will not use this book as our Bible for small groups and that is not the point of the book anyway. It helps you decide what you need to do differently and what you need to keep the same. It does provide a great case for a semester based system which we have desperately needed.
I highly recommend this book to everyone over small groups. | | | | Best Book on Small Groups I've Read! Feb 4, 2010 |
I devoured this book. Part of my doctoral dissertation a few years ago was about the value of small groups! I wish this book was around when I wrote my dissertation.
ACTIVATE is the most "common sense" approach to small group ministry in the local church. It contains a great systems approach and a practical how-to implementation guide. I went through the book with our small group leadership team and they have embraced the approach and we are now in the process of implementing this system in our church.
Have a church of small groups instead of a church with small groups. Make it easy for new people to get connected and see your assimilation improve too! Don't put it off, order now! | | | | Fresh Approach to Groups Feb 3, 2010 |
| We picked up "Activate" just as a new Small Groups Champion was stepping up in our church. The book really sparked a lot of discussion for us on how we have done things and how we could be doing things. Not every idea is "new", but every idea presented deserves our attention and consideration. We may not change everything we are doing, but we definitely will make some adjustments. We appreciate the Activate principles in each chapter. One helpful principle for us - "Allow casual friendships to develop without feeling a need to force intimacy." We have felt this pressure and wondered why it happens in some instances and not in others. Thanks for some great material to consider. | | | Write your own review about Activate
