| I have been using this book with special needs adults as a Sunday School lesson book. We have all enjoyed the personal stories Rick included that made the story of Christmas come home even more. The tie in with this book and his Purpose Driven Life book is profound and quite meaniful. I cannot imagine reading the Purpose Driven Life text without reading this followup book. Being able to find touching and meaningful materials that reach special needs adults has always been a chore. Too many Bible quotes, too much theology or a text that is written to a high level of understanding. Rick hit home with a down to earth story that all can understand and be touched by his words. Rick Warren, some have named him "America's pastor," furnishes the reader with an inspiring and Bible-based volume on the true meaning of Christmas.
This slender book winsomely and effectively covers:
- The birth of Christ: its meaning and impact
- The manner in which the Christian should celebrate the holiday season (with practical applications offered)
- Salvation and real hope come with Jesus
- Family is important during the holidays, but Christ must be the center
- How to reach out to secular folks who may not like the religious aspect of the seasonal trappings.
This is a marvelous book for personal devotions, family Bible study, and home groups. Furthermore it makes a wonderful gift to help draw others close to the wonderful one: Jesus Christ.

"The Purpose of Christmas" by Rick Warren is a great title for the person who either needs:
1. To be reminded of or who wants to learn for the first time
2. Why Christmas is celebrated.
Being a follower of Jesus Christ for several years, I belong in the first category. I love decorating our house (inside and outside), watching special Christmas shows and movies, attending socials, driving to local neigborhoods seeing lights, etc. However, if I am not careful, I can let the activity crowd out Jesus Christ in my life.
Warren's 3 main points revolve around what Christmas is for:
1. A Time For Celebration - Believers celebrate Jesus Christ's birthday.
2. A Time For Salvation - Jesus Christ offers eternal life for anyone who accepts His free grace. We cannot earn our way into heaven through good works or thoughts. Jesus has taken care of everything!
3. A Time For Reconciliation - Christmas is a great time to think about and pursue peace with God and others.
The book is around 120 pages and is a great little book.
Read, enjoy, and be encouraged. Don't let the humbugs or politically correct take away your Christmas joy!

If you have always wondered what is the purpose of Christmas, this book is for you. I rate this book as G, general audience. Warren writes in a way that the man in the street can understand. There is not much theological jargon and even Bible translations are carefully chosen, with preference given to modern English use. Warren tries hard to be clear on the one hand, and also faithful to the biblical text on the other hand.
The purpose of Christmas is about celebration, about salvation and for reconciliation. He touches on many aspects of human living, that can be redeemed through the promises of Christ, who came down to earth. He consistently directs readers to recognize the 3-fold pattern of Christianity. For example, true peace must always be peace WITH God, followed by having the peace OF God, so that one can truly share peace WITH others.
This little book is small in size but big in coverage. Warren distills the message of Christmas into a delightful little book and makes the "Purpose of Christmas" into a gift that can be passed around from person to person. There is not much to be critical about, since this book is for a general audience. Warren should be applauded for giving us a book for all to experience God's gift of celebration, of salvation and of reconciliation. The world needs it.
