Reviews - What do customers think about Deadly Devotion (Port Aster Secrets V1)?

Fast paced with lots of twists  Jun 14, 2015
Deadly Devotion is the first book in the Port Aster Secrets series and is also the first book that I have read by Sandra Orchard. I definitely enjoyed it and will be reading more of her books in the future.

The author had me, and the main characters, guessing and following different leads throughout the entire book! Kate and Tom truly had their hands full. There were so many people and potential motives that these two had to sort through.

Deadly Devotion really captured my interest. I was very surprised at the way the author kept the twists and turns going throughout the story. I did, eventually, figure out the culprit, but it was only a few pages before the reveal. She kept me guessing for almost the entire book.

Kate and Tom have the possibility of attraction and of a potential romance in Deadly Devotion. There was often angst between the two, as well. If only they can get over their suspicions of each other and learn to trust again. They both make some judgment errors about each other and that created some serious tension in portions of the story.

This storyline had a lot of interesting information about natural remedies and teas. I really enjoyed the extra details and I feel that those pieces of information enhanced the story and brought Kate’s passion for tinctures to life for me. I’m looking forward to book two and the continuation of this series.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher, through NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review.

Kept me guessing all the way through!  May 23, 2015
This is the first book of Sandra Orchard’s that I've ever read. It was fantastic. She did a marvelous job of crafting a twisting and tangling suspense/mystery novel. She had so many suspects in this story and presented just enough about each of them that they were definitely believable as the murderer. I didn't know right up until the end who was the culprit.

I loved both of the main characters, Kate Adams and Tom Parker. They were incredibly well developed and presented. The secondary characters were also well developed. I thoroughly enjoyed the relationships between the different characters.

I will definitely be reading more books by this author.

Well-done and interesting  Oct 22, 2014
Research scientist Kate Adams knows her friend and fellow researcher, Daisy Leacock, did not commit suicide by drinking a lethal dose of poisoned herbal tea. Despite the coroners report, Kate insists that detective Tom Parker, a former FBI agent, look into her friend's death. Tom's boss and others are adamant that the case remain closed, though Tom, against his better judgment, tells Kate he will do more investigating if she can bring him evidence that Daisy's death was not suicide. Kate starts digging. Several possible assassins with a variety of motives surface, and it was fun trying to guess who the killer was. The plot was intriguing, and the way the author wove in herbal medicine was well-done and interesting.

On-the-edge-of-your-seat GOOD!  Jun 14, 2014
Present Day - Niagara Peninsula, Canada

"Wow, thanks. Hmm, what other compliment could I fish for?" His gaze tangled with hers in a playful tug-of-war. He tapped his fingers on his lips. "You don't like the way I kiss?"
"I wouldn't know." She smirked, forgetting for a moment that he was a cop and she was involved in two too many of his cases.
"I could remedy that." He brushed his thumb along her bottom lip, releasing a flurry of butterflies.
She held her breath as his smoldering gaze drifted to her lips.
With a bittersweet smile, he dropped his hand to his side.
"Except...you're still not sure you can trust me. What can we do about that?"

Blind Trust is the second book in the Port Aster series that follows the lives of Kate Adams, a research scientist, and Detective Tom Parker. It seems their lives keep crossing when Kate is implicated in two of Tom's investigations, this one involving counterfeiting. The book goes on to include more complicated parts of the storyline involving Kate's past. Kate is a very strong and determined woman who knows how to fight her own battles but can also be very vulnerable. Tom is my favorite character. He is a teddy bear in private and away from work but he is a tenacious bulldog when it comes to protecting those he loves. He is often in full detective mode but can shift into with a moments notice when needed. He is the essence of the perfect detective.

I loved the characters because they are so life-like and the storyline flows so well. It's full of suspense and drama. The romance blooming between Kate and Tom is sweet and endearing and I can't wait to read the next installment in the series to see where their relationship leads. The religious overtones were subtle and didn't feel like it was being shoved at you. A perfect compliment to the story. The area of Port Aster is a beautiful back drop for the story. I haven't read book one in this series but, even though I think it would be beneficial and add to the story, I really didn't need to read it in order to follow what was happening in this book. Sandra does a great job of filling the reader in on what happened previously. The storyline was engaging and on-the-edge-of-your-seat good. I was drawn in from the very beginning and held captivated until the last page. I can't wait to go back and read the first book and I am definitely looking forward to the next book in the series. I compare Sandra's writing to Colleen Coble's so if you love Colleen's books you will certainly love Sandra's. I can't recommend this book enough!

Fast and Entertaining Read  Mar 12, 2014
Deadly Devotion kept me guessing throughout the twist and turns of the story and the last sentence of every chapter begged me to turn the next page. The engaging plot and snappy dialogue made this mystery a fast and entertaining read.

Sandra Orchard's characters in Deadly Devotion all have likeable traits, but also the motives to benefit from a sweet old woman's death. Kate Adams, our protagonist, refuses to believe that her dear friend and mentor, Daisy Leacock, would have committed suicide, but that's what the cops are quick to claim before closing the case. Kate's loyalty to Daisy is endearing, as well is her naivete in investigating the case on her own. She stops at nothing, endangering her own life, to get answers, all the while looking very much like a suspect herself.

Tom Parker, the cop on Kate's side, most of the time, is torn between having feelings for her and questioning if she might have wanted Daisy dead. Kate could be seeking credit for the research she and Daisy were doing on herbal remedies as a treatment for depression -- but then why would she dig up the case?

While Kate and her memories of Daisy shed an upbeat light on the story, their work combating depression, is also fitting for the story. Tom Parker and his father, a retired cop who helps in their investigation, are mourning the death of Tom's mother and not doing well. Will Kate help them to find meaning in life again? Beneath this classic suspense novel is a story about devotion, faith and love.

Great Suspense  Oct 17, 2013
Kate Adams had become close friends with her mentor, Daisy Leacock, as they worked together in a research laboratory testing herbs as possible medicinal treatments. They were close to a breakthrough in a treatment for depression when Daisy was discovered dead. An investigation ensued, but with no evidence to indicate foul play aside from a cup of tea, the case was closed and Daisy's death was ruled a suicide. Kate knew her friend's strong spiritual beliefs and refused to believe that her mentor's death was self inflicted. Approaching Detective Tom Parker with her suspicions Kate insisted that she would find the truth surrounding Daisy's death. Several suspects had motives to want Daisy dead, and Kate insisted on investigating on her own to clear Daisy's name and prove she was murdered. Much to Detective Parker's dismay, Kate's insistence on following her instincts placed her in a number of dangerous situations. Parker's job was on the line because of the time he spent keeping Kate out of trouble. Kate's motives were also questioned as developments revealed themselves.

Sandra Orchard has written a compelling murder investigation that kept me on the edge of my seat and up into the wee hours of the morning! The suspense in this novel was ceaseless, and the questions regarding each of the suspects were endless! Characters in this fast-paced book are well defined and varied, some suspicious, others colorful, but all individuals of interest. The author creates settings that are detailed and descriptive, creating atmospheres of suspense in themselves. Underlying spiritual concerns were blended throughout this book, including faith and forgiveness. I thoroughly enjoyed this suspense-filled novel, and look forward to reading more books by this talented author.

I really liked it!!!  Aug 12, 2013
This is a GREAT book!!! Filled with twists and turns; though I thought I knew who the killer was early on I was never 100% positive!!! There are SO many twists! Sandra knows how to end a chapter in a way that you don't want to put the book down because you have to see what happens next. I can't wait for the next book in the series especially after the teaser in the back. There where some times that I felt it jumped around a little too much and I thought I had missed something. A fast paced mystery that's full of suspense and adventure! Deadly Devotion is a must read and Sandra Orchard is a fabulous writer. From the dedication she not only had my attention, but I knew I had found a new favorite author! :) I love the characters with there secrets and faith, and I really loved that it was set in Canada. I for one haven't really read much set in Canada. I wish Daisy hadn't been the victim because I think she would have been a really cool character. LOL! I loved learning more about marigolds and other herbs that I didn't even know about. I wish there where certain businesses from this book in my home town! I don't want to give anything away so I'll pick my songs and sign off!

Deadly Devotion  Jul 26, 2013
Kate’s mentor and friend Daisy is found dead from what the coroner deems a suicide. The police agree and quickly close the investigation. The only problem is that Kate knows beyond a shadow of a doubt that Daisy would never do that. Against the wishes of Detective Tom Parker, Kate sets out to prove that someone murdered Daisy.

Along the way we are confronted with several viable suspects but each has something that just doesn't quite clench the case. Kate continues to get deeper and deeper enmeshed in the investigation until her very life is at stake. Someone obviously doesn't want her to figure it out.

I wish that the characters had been better developed. In my opinion Tom and Kate came across as pretty wishy washy. I know that this is a series and the budding romance needs to develop but I just couldn't get past the way one minute they were totally smitten and the next at complete odds.

Over all I enjoyed the story and I’m looking forward to reading book two in the series which is scheduled to release in June of 2014. The third and final book in the series is scheduled to release in June of 2015.

I was provided a book to facilitate this review.

Deadly Devotion  Jul 24, 2013
Daisy is the victim who though knowing much about herbs, is supposed to have died from drinking the wrong herbal tea. The case was closed by the town’s Chief of Police who has a father with a soiled past, but Kate just can’t accept the coroner’s ruling. Kate decides she will do her own sleuthing to ferret out the killer while being maid of honor for her roommate.
These are just a few of the ingredients Sandra places to the captures reader’s imagination and interest right from the start. On top of that, Daisy’s choice of who is to inherit her estate leads the police to focus on just two people. Hank, the town Chief of Police isn’t exactly acting like he wants to dig up the truth. Tom and Hank are constantly wondering about the other’s guilt or innocence even though they grew up together.
Sometimes mysteries can seem like they follow the same formula, but here is a new series that draws questions as to how the mystery will be solved. There are a plethora of turns along with suspicions regarding the real cause of Daisy’s death plastered on the front page news in the small town where everybody knows everybody else’s life story.
It was so enjoyable to watch the chemistry between Kate and Tom grows plus the constant tension of whether to trust each other or not. The other characters in the novel add more color to the story some of whom make figuring out the real culprit interesting. I really enjoyed reading this novel as it used a different method to do away with the victim than I had ever read of before. Most people are aware of herbs around that are sold in various places in different consistencies. People appreciate flowers that are nice to look at, but some can be deadly. I couldn’t put the novel down and I await with eager anticipation the next installment in this series! Pick this novel up and enjoy it. The story was fun to read, exciting and challenging to figure out!

Keeps You Guessing Til The End  Jul 21, 2013
This book's plot was full of mystery and suspense from page one! Boy, it's tough to get your housework done when you are reading a book you simply cannot put down! Halfway through the book, the author still had me guessing as to who the guilty party was. Now, that's what I call intense! Most of the time, you can usually tell a little way in, which character the author is leaning towards, but not in this one! Kate seems to always be on the edge of danger. Tom, is always playing the hero, risking his own job, to help Kate out. There are plenty of suspects with shady pasts. And last but not least a blossoming romance. Sandra also does a great job of incorporating just the right amount of God and faith into the story. I guess that is one of my expectations as a reader of Christian fiction. I am glad this is book one in the series, because I can't wait til book two! This one gets five stars from me!
I received this book from Revell in exchange for my honest opinion.

Port Aster is a place of secrets and Deadly Devotion  Jul 20, 2013
Deadly Devotion
Port Aster Secrets #1
By Sandra Orchard

Having returned home following the death of his mother, former FBI agent Tom Parker is having a hard time adjusting to the 15 years of change that have occurred in Port Aster during his absence. Adding to his stress is Kate Adams who is convinced that her friend and mentor Daisy Leacock didn't commit suicide.

Kate isn't going to just sit around and let Daisy's name and reputation be ruined by the police and their determination that Daisy killed herself with Marigolds! But Kate's personal investigation is pulling her into more danger than she can possible imagine, at least in Detective Parker's opinion. But Kate doesn't trust police and Tom Parker's continual appearances are grating on her though she is perhaps a little attracted to him, maybe.

But Port Aster is a community of secrets, but which secret pertains to Daisy's death? Kate wants to believe everyone while Tom is suspicious of everyone, how can two opposites ever hope to have something more than a cordial disagreement at best? Read Deadly Devotions and find out.

Is it possible to truly know someone so well that you can say with absolute certainty whether or not they would or would not do a certain act? How well do you know the person you are closest to? This is the premise of Deadly Devotion. Trust - can you trust someone with the truth about who you are? This is the question that confronts Kate and Tom as they re-examine Daisy's last days and the evidence that could lead them to a murderer and to each other.

This is a whodunit that would stump Jessica Fletcher if she took a trip to Canada and wound up in Port Aster. This isn't Mayberry, but I wouldn't mind visiting and having a cup of freshly brewed tea or maybe not the tea!

I can't wait to make a second visit with book 2 of which there is a sneak peek. (More secrets are about to come to light and Kate is again caught up in the middle of it all!)

I was provided a copy of this book by Revell in exchange for my honest review.
