Item description for Love Liberty Disco by Newsboys...
This album is totally drenched in praise for God. A welcome edition to any CD collection.
Those in the pursuit of happiness may well find it in Love Liberty Disco. Following the success of Step Up to the Microphone, Newsboys are spinning out pure pop gold, glamming up their rock with a delicious party vibe. Britpop flavor melds seamlessly with crunchy guitar, soaring string arrangements, and falsetto vocals on "Break" and the roots-pop of "Everyone's Someone." The title track, punctuated by elastic bass, hand claps, and feel-good lyrics, is about the most fun thing going in Christian rock music. Vocal harmonies glide, muscular rock riffs twist against orchestral melody, and the triumphant spirit of celebration courses through each jubilant groove. Love Liberty Disco is some of the best news of 1999. --Paige La Grone

Pretty good Mar 4, 2005
(really 3.5 but that's not an option here)
I feel too many people have seen the cover of this album and thought "ok, I'm staying away!". I didn't actually think anything like that when I first became a Newsboys fan and saw this album. I did think the cover looked a bit funny, but I didn't think it meant the music would be weird. I checked it out this morning, and first half of it is REALLY AWESOME. The Newsboys are my favorite band and I love them, but I didn't think I would be giving this album a 3.5 out of 5. That was because, throughout the last half, the originality slowly died out. They weren't bad songs, just not very good as Newsboys songs. Anyway, let me review the songs...
Beautiful Sound: This was one of the first Newsboys songs I heard, and it was just right after I became a fan. Every time I hear it, it feels like the first time I ever heard it (that's a very good thing). It's one of the Newsboys' very best songs, and it's one of my favorites. Beautiful song! Great worship, too.
Love Liberty Disco: Ok, don't let the title fool you. This is more like rock/pop with a good disco touch. Anyway...I've gotta say that this is an awesome song! If you think the song sounds funny, just wait until you see the music video. Very fun song, great lyrics, great tune. Gotta love it!
Forever Man: Great song! Very original, it starts out a bit mellow, but then it gets heavy and rocked out. Great vocals and tune! Good beat, too.
Good Stuff: VERY good stuff! Always one of my favorites. Phil Joel took the lead vocals, and he sounded great! Very fun song, always great.
Everyone's Someone: Ah, wonderful song. It has a good classic rock touch to the sound. Good strings, too. The lyrics really stand out!
Say You Need Love: Ok, this is disco! I really forgot how much of a disco sound it had. But that's not always a bad thing. The lyrics are great, the vocals and tune are great, but I can't listen to the tune of the chorus without thinking of this "children's song" I heard when I was little (thankfully, there is not another Newsboys song that sounds like that to me). Otherwise, it's a good song.
I Would Give Everything: Starts out with a bit of an '80's sound and tune, but that's never a bad thing to me. Phil Joel's background vocals sound great. At first in the song, I was really afraid it wouldn't go through a change of sound, but it very slowly changes. Great song!
Break: Well, this isn't a bad song, but I feel like the Newsboys lost some originality in it; the beginning sounds far to much like dc Talk's "The Hard Way". Thankfully, it changes and gets better as it goes on, and I'm able to get used to it. Not a bad song, but not my favorite.
I Surrender All: A slower song, with a bit of an R&B type of beat. But again, that isn't always a bad thing. It does have a very different sound for the Newsboys, but it's very good! It's another song that slowly changes and gets a little better. Jody Davis and Phil join in on the vocals later on and they sound great!
Fall On You: Great lyrics, good song. Sadly, it didn't hugely impress me as far as the sound goes. The lyrics are, of course, great. Peter Furler's vocals closed it nicely, though.
Well, I never ever thought there would be a Newsboys album that I wouldn't like on all levels, but this one didn't do a ton for me. The first five songs were absolutely AWESOME, but I felt the last five were lacking a lot of originality. The album sort of left me off thinking, "ok...that's all?". This album was not "mind-blowing" all the way through, which is funny to me, because the Newsboys' albums usually stay fresh the whole time. I'm sure I could probably get used to it after listening to it a few more times.
Fun foray into power pop and disco kitsch Nov 19, 2004
The Newsboys are no longer the high energy "boy band" they were way back in the 1980s, having established a durable career with many sonic highlights. With LOVE LIBERTY DISCO, the Newsboys continue their impressive winning streak that began with NOT ASHAMED. In fact, this may be their strongest release ever, other than TAKE ME TO YOUR LEADER. The sound throughout is vintage pop. "Beautiful Sound," "Forever Man," "Everyone's Someone," "I Would Give Everything," and "Say You Need Love" sound like the Electric Light Orchestra meets the Cars, with a dash of Blondie and the Beach Boys thrown in. (Those under 25 may reference Tal Bachman or Collective Soul.) The title cut and "Good Stuff" are more dance and hip hop oriented. The album ends with two "vertically-directed" songs, "Surrender All" and "Fall on You" that remind us that the Newsboys still have a strong focal point to all of their work. It's been a long journey since "Kingdom Man." As one who has watched the Newsboys through the years, it's been quite a ride. LOVE LIBERTY DISCO lets us know that the best days for the band...and their fans...are not behind us. There have been many highlights since, but few have encapsulated the pure joy of this stellar release.
5 STAR ALBUMN Mar 28, 2004
This one of the best albumns ever! Many people may be disturbed at the title (love liberty disco) or the fact that some of the boys are wearing make-up but you shouldn't judge a CD by it's cover! The lyrics are solid and the music is smashing! Beautiful Sound is really neat a really great intro track. The title track Love Liberty Disco is funkier but it's alot of fun! Another one of my favorites is Say You Need Love. It's an extremely encouraging song. This CD definitley deserves 5 stars! Keep up the good work boys!
I Still Don't Understand Why They Say it's Bad Mar 25, 2004
I don't care what all those album reviewers say, this album is a piece of art. In order to fully appreciate the beauty of the songs on this album, you must try to understand. Probably the two greatest songs ever written, Beautiful Sound and Forever Man, are on this album. Do very many see them that way? No. Why? Because people don't appreciate the precious faith in God these songs show. Just listen to me, buy this CD, but don't expect all disco, but buy it because it has words in it that define life in a whole new perspective. The best songs other than Beautiful Sound and Forever Man are Love Liberty Disco, Good Stuff, Say You Need Love, Break, Fall On You. Why that's almost all of them! Who says this is bad?
