| Let me start off by saying, I really like Beth Moore! When I saw her name on the cover of Voices of the Faithful I was excited to read this book. This is a good book. While not all of the writers in here are my favorites, there are a lot of good nuggets throughout. Some of the stories of inspiration were more sad than inspirational. And some of them were kind of drawn out. I think this book is a really good book for occasional reading. I would not make it a daily devotional, but I think it's just fine for "reading on the porch when it's raining" kind of situations. There were stories of hope and strength and power and that was encouraging. I look forward to other books like this one in the future. | | | | Missionary Hearts? This is your devotional! Thomas Nelson was very kind to send me a free copy of "Voices of the Faithful" (Book 2) for review. I am glad they did, but I think my children are even more pleased.
"Voices of the Faithful" is a devotional book with an entry for each day of the year. What makes this devotional series stand out from all the rest is each entry is written by a missionary serving around the world. As you read this book you get the awesome opportunity to hear stories of missionaries while also meditating on God's Word for the day Every entry is concluded with a prayer. Sometimes you will pray for missionaries serving around the world, sometimes for people groups, and sometimes for your own heart and life.
This is book 2 of a devotional series. There was a need for a second volume because the first volume was so popular! Beth Moore conceived the idea for this series while traveling abroad. She introduces the book while Kim P. Davis introduces each month's section. Kim P. Davis is also the compiler of the stories in this book.
As I mentioned, my children are extremely happy with this book. They ask me to read from it every night before bed. When I finish one day's entry they ask me to read another and then another and then another. You get the picture.

I received Voices of the Faithful Book 2 from Thomas Nelson to review on my blog.
Voices of the Faithful is a collection of inspiring stories from missionaries around the world. Each month has a different theme (ex. Prayer, Our Priority, Lessons from the Young, Be Encouraged) and there is a short devotional shared from different missionaries who are identified by first name or initials and the area in which they are serving.
I was originally drawn to this book because this series was created by Beth Moore, and because I am intrigued by those Christians who sacrifice, live amid different cultures, and try to share Jesus Christ in places where most of us never will visit or give much thought to.
Of course I found some stories more interesting than others and many of the stories are quite short. Others I was deeply moved and challenged by. For that reason I would recommend this book (although not highly) to others but not in the daily devotional format in which it is designed. You can easily read through the brief daily stories. For those looking to learn more about missionary life, I would recommend a good missionary biography instead.

| I know it seems like forever since I posted a book review... that is because it HAS been forever! When I received "Voices of the Faithful" to lend my opinion to I was overwhelmed and have taken more time to review this book than others in the past. Yes, it is a daily devotional, but it is more than that. At this time of year and in this current economic downturn it has been very refreshing to be reminded that God is working every day in every corner of the globe. Written entirely by missionaries, this testimony to the power of God to transform lives and meet extraordinary needs is a daily shot in the arm to those of us who doubt... pretty much everyone at one time or other.
