Overview
A Tender Tale of Love on the Prairie Perfect for CBA Readers

Although Everett Cline can hardly keep up with the demands of his homestead, he won't humiliate himself by looking for a helpmate ever again--not after being jilted by three mail-order brides. When a well-meaning neighbor goes behind his back to bring yet another mail-order bride to town, he has good reason to doubt it will work, especially after getting a glimpse at the woman in question. She's the prettiest woman he's ever seen, and it's just not possible she's there to marry a simple homesteader like him.

Julia Lockwood has never been anything more than a pretty pawn for her father or a business acquisition for her former fiance. Having finally worked up the courage to leave her life in Massachusetts, she's determined to find a place where people will value her for more than her looks. Having run out of all other options, Julia resorts to a mail-order marriage in far-away Kansas.

Everett is skeptical a cultured woman like Julia could be happy in a life on the plains, while Julia, deeply wounded by a past relationship, is skittish at the idea of marriage at all. When, despite their hesitations, they agree to a marriage in name only, neither one is prepared for the feelings that soon arise to complicate their arrangement. Can two people accustomed to keeping their distance let the barricades around their hearts down long enough to fall in love?

Everett Cline will never humiliate himself by seeking a mail-order bride. Not again. He's already been jilted by three mail-order brides and figures a wife just isn't in his future. However, a well-meaning neighbor hasn't given up on seeing him settled, so she goes behind his back to bring yet another woman to town for him.
Julia Lockwood has never been anything more than a pretty pawn for her father or a business acquisition for her former fiance. A mail-order marriage in faraway Kansas is a last resort, but she'll do anything to leave her life in Massachusetts and the heartbreak she's experienced there.
Although Everett doesn't see how a beautiful, cultured woman like Julia could be happy sharing his simple life, he could really use a helpmate on his homestead. Determined to prove she's more than just a pretty face, Julia agrees to a marriage in name only. Faced with the harsh realities of life on the prairie and hesitant to explore the tentative feelings growing between them, can Everett and Julia ever let each other in long enough to fall in love?

Reviews - What do customers think about A Bride For Keeps?

Out with five stars!  Jul 29, 2015
*My Thoughts*

I love, love, love Melissa Jagears! Her historical novel, A bride in store got my attention. Then I read Love Letters, her novella. Then this came out and I HAD to read it! I'm so glad I did!! This one is even better then a Bride in store!

I loved the idea of a young boy bringing to people together through his care. It worked out exactly as I thought it should! The development in Silas and Kate's relationship worked perfectly. Both characters experienced change in the book and I loved that. When you add in a sweet little boy in need of love, it just gets better!

There is plenty of suspense as far as what is going on throughout the book. I found myself constantly second guessing my opinions which I loved!

A perfect historical romance in every way

*My overall thoughts*

A Bride at Last by Melissa Jagears is the third book in a wonderful historical series! With engaging characters and a perfect Christian testimony, this is a favorite! Love!

A Beautiful Debut Novel  Apr 2, 2015
This is an outstanding novel in every way, but perhaps one of the best parts of this story was the deep characterization. I have rarely read a novel that did such an excellent job of taking me inside the characters' heads. Julia's constant battle within herself was fascinating: the war between her fear and her desire to experience love was poignant and wonderfully fleshed out for the reader. Everett's own struggle to be the husband God wanted him to be, even as his wife held him at arms' length, was also well-written and entirely believable. I could not help but root for this couple, even as the author did a fantastic job of scaring me that a happy ending would be near to impossible with these two.

The most beautiful struggle in the novel, however, had to be Julia's coming to terms with God as a loving Father, and with herself as a child He loved. The resolution of that particular part of the story brought tears to my eyes.

Although my copy came free in exchange for an honest review, I would not hesitate to highly recommend this novel to any fan of historical or inspirational fiction. The storyline caught and held my attention from the first few pages and did not let go until the book came to it's satisfying conclusion.

Melissa Jagears's A Bride for Keeps  Aug 14, 2014
A Bride for Keeps is set on the Kansas prairie in the 1800’s.
It is the story of a mail order bride, Julia Lockwood being
asked by her friend, Rachael to come to town for the purpose
of marriage. Only the Rachel does not tell the intended
groom-to-be, Everett Cline about the her request until the bride
arrives. What an awkward situation for both, Julia and Everett!!
Both characters have deep secrets that need God’s intervention
to overcome in order for the marriage to succeed. They are well
developed characters that have undeniable chemistry with a
great cast of supporting characters. The secondary characters
add some humor to the story with their family antics.
The author covers the social issues of trust, abuse, dysfunctional
family life, family values, personal values, living with deceit,
rejection, fear, loss and grieving plus faith, friendship,
forgiveness and love. It was amazing to realize that the a lot of
issues during that era mirror a lot of the current issues
throughout the world.
The book is powerful in its teaching that no matter the
circumstances God’s love and forgiveness are always
unconditionally there for the asking.
I received this ebook from the author. The opinion is my own.

Can True love overcome Pride?  Nov 22, 2013
"A Bride for keeps" is a wonderful, christian, historical, romance novel. I enjoyed the way the characters interacted with each other and both were very strong willed. For some reason I love mail-order-bride type books, it interest me how people actually did that and the many different reasons why someone would become a mail-order-bride, or look for one. This book will keep you reading to see if Everett and Julia can ever get over their past experiences and find a happy, loving marriage. If you enjoy good clean historical romance fiction you will love this book. I look forward to more books by Melissa Jagears.

LIttle Conflict  Nov 19, 2013
I had thought for sure, by the description that I would love this novel. Mail-order bride stories always enthralled me, and this one had really good conflict between the characters, but nothing else. Everett and Julia had a lot to work through from their pasts in order to love each other. They both had fears and hurts to deal with.

Yet there was almost no outward conflict. From the first chapter, I thought there was a hint at a reappearance of Julia's past, but that never happened. And their current problems never boiled over. If either of these had happened, the novel would have been easily four stars, if not five. There were some other issues I wish had been addressed (like Rachel's meddling), but were of lesser importance.

Those who prefer a sweeter romance, with little external conflict, this book would be a keeper. The main characters were contently at odds and Everett was one of the most patient men I have ever read about.

I received a free copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

A Bride for Keeps by Melissa Jagears  Oct 27, 2013
Everett Cline had been jilted enough to wound any man's pride. After his best friend's sister-in-law left him for another man he decided to try his luck with mail-order brides only to be jilted by three more women. With a bruised ego, as well as a bruised heart, Everett refused to go that route again. Even though he longed for the companionship of a good woman he would no longer be fodder for town gossip. But when his best friend's wife, Rachel, ordered a bride without his knowledge he found himself enamored with the beautiful Julia Lockwood. Even though he would like nothing better than to have her by his side he knows he must guard his heart. What if she leaves him like the others? Surely this time would break his heart but can he love her completely and, at the same time, live with a marriage of convenience?

Julia Lockwood fled from Boston for two reasons, to get away from her father's scheming ambitions and to put distance between herself and a horrible nightmare. Why else would she agree to be a mail-order bride? All Julia had were her looks, or so she had been told, so what man would want her for anything more? Everett was a kind man but Julia felt she had to prove her worth. She worked as hard as any man but she was afraid that when Everett found out about her past he would no longer want her. How could he love her if he knew? Her past also kept her from accepting the love of her Heavenly Father. Could Everett help her come to understand her own self-worth, not only in her eyes, but in his eyes and the eyes of God as well? Can she come to love her husband despite her fears? Will God heal her heart and give her the love she never dreamed she would have?

Let me start by saying I absolutely loved this book. This is the first book I have read by Melissa Jagears but I am already looking forward to the next one (hmmm maybe one about William?). The plot is one that is always a pleasing read to me. Both Everett and Julia had feelings for each other but kept them to themselves which made for some great tension. Julia's feelings surfaced more toward the end but there were little hints earlier on that she didn't seem to recognize as the beginnings of love. Although this type of plot isn't new it sure had some new angles that enriched the story. I won't give away any significant parts (no spoilers here) but it also dealt with an issue that is rarely addressed in historical fiction and I loved that. I loved Everett's heart too. It was as big and wide as the land he lived on and the way he loved Julia through her fears and doubts only endeared him to me more. If you love historical fiction and great story lines you will absolutely love A Bride for Keeps. I highly and irrevocably recommend it!

**I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House for my honest review.**

Couldn't put it down!  Oct 24, 2013
A Bride for Keeps ~ Melissa Jagears

I truly enjoyed this book; it was a wonderful read from a first time author! I found the story captivating, to have a mail order bride set up for you! Wow! What could you do when everyone thinks you are doomed before she even meets you because of your record with other mail order brides? And if you were the woman trying to prove you are better able bodied then your looks relate? This was the perfect recipe for a great read!
I found this to be a wonderful story of two people who are searching for love and settling for what they deem is enough. Wanting to prove to themselves that they are worth more then others think of them. While trying to each other that they are the perfect one for what the other one needs. Can love ever blossom between to such characters? I sure is fun to read and find out! I am very much looking forward to the next book by this author.

I received a free copy of this book for my honest review.

Mail Order Bride!  Oct 19, 2013
What a fantastic read. From page one to the very last page this author draws you into the story. If this is Melissa Jagears debut book I can’t wait to see what follows! She has made a fan out of me. I finished this book early this morning and I thought about it off and on all day. It made that big of an impact on me.

If you want to know how hard it was to live in the west in 1876 this book is for you. The characters are lovable, well most of them are, and the hardships are plenty. Brides are hard to find and men are lonely.

Everett Cline needs a wife and Julia Lockwood needs to escape from her life in the East. Is she making a mistake agreeing to become a wife to a man she doesn’t even know?

This is the most touching book I have read in a long time. Many Christian fiction books refer to God and even quote scripture, however, the message that Melissa Jagears includes toward the end of this book between Everett and Julia made my heart overflow. Such a tender and intimate invitation for a man to extend to a woman. What a great God moment.

If you are reading my review I urge you to purchase a copy of this book. You are going to love it!

I won this book from Bethany House, thank you. I wasn’t required to write a review. It was my pleasure to do so. The opinions expressed are mine alone.

An Enchanting Mail-Order Bride Story  Oct 18, 2013
I really enjoyed this debut novel by Melissa Jagears. This is the story of Julia and Everett. What a moving mail order bride tale!

After being jilted by his sweetheart years ago, Everett set out to find himself a mail order bride for companionship as well as need for help around his farm. Three attempts and three failures later, he has given up. His friends, however, have not given up! Much to Everett's surprise, his new mail order bride has arrived!

Julia is typical of many mail-order brides in that she has something in her past that she is trying to escape from. Where Julia strays from the norm is that her past includes a very traumatic event that is going to make it extremely difficult to trust a man ever again.

When these two marry, will Everett be able to open himself up to his new bride, even after being jilted so many times before? Will Julia ever be able to trust Everett and be the wife he desires?

I found these characters to be very well written. Julia's fear is completely understandable, as is Everett's frustration with her! Watching these two find love is thoroughly enchanting!

I received a copy of A Bride for Keeps from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review, which I have given.

A Bride for Keeps  Oct 16, 2013
This is a story set in Kansas in the year 1876 out on the prairie. Life then was a lot of hard work and lonely. Friends lived a distance away and the nearest town sometimes more than an hour away. Julia Lockwood arrives as arranged by her pen pal, Rachel. Unbeknownst to Julia, Rachel has yet to tell her friend, Everett, that Julia has arrived to marry him. Everett Cline has not had success with mail-order brides. He has been unsuccessful in getting three of them to the altar. When he discovers Rachel’s scheme, he just knows Julia will reject him too.
Julia is on the run from her father and his business partner, who value her for her looks only. Julia has other issues that she carries with her that she allows to determine her future and her behavior. She went to church infrequently as a child with her father, but only so he could see and be seen by his business acquaintances. Julia’s mother died when she was nine, as well as her infant brother. Julia has built strong walls around her heart for protection and refuses to let anyone in. If she works hard enough, she will be loved and valued, right?
Everett had accepted that he would always remain single, and now Julia has arrived and surprisingly enough agrees to marry him. He keeps his distance because he knows she will leave him and he’ll be alone again. Their strained relationship stumbles along with neither one trusting the other. Everett finally has his lack of reliance on God and willingness to open up called on the carpet by his best friend. Will he be able to show his wife her true worth to him as well as to God?
This is one of those stories where you smile at the end, having read a good story. I was able to read this in a short time with my nose pressed into the pages as I anxiously read to see how Everett and Julia’s troubled relationship would emerge. One thing that I liked Everett’s willingness to put his wife’s needs before his own and do things to make her happy instead of what he wanted to do. Rachel’s guidance as a friend and wife was encouraging to read about, and I liked her practicality. I look forward to more books from this author. I hope you will take the time to read this tender and charming romance.

Wonderful Debut  Oct 1, 2013
A Bride for Keeps is a story of Everett Cline and Julia Lockwood set in 1876 Kansas. Everett was previously jilted by three mail order brides and gave up on ever marrying. julia is a beauty who wants to be a mail order bride to escape heartache that she experiences in Massachusetts. Do these two get what they are looking for in each other?
This is a beautifully written debut novel by Melissa Jagears. While reading this novel, I often was reminded of Janette Oke's writing style. if you love her writing, you will definitely enjoy Melissa's.
From the very first page, I was intrigued with the story up until the end. throughout there were several laugh out loud moments that I did not see coming. This is one of the best novels I have read this year.
I hope to see more of these characters in a series and read more by Melissa Jagears in the future. Trust me you will want to read this one. I highly recommend it
