Overview
A call to Christians to be caught up in and consumed by the powerful whirlwind thatis the gospel of grace Christianity is based on the foundation of the good news of the gospel. Yet how many Christians truly find their identity there? How many are part of a community clinging to the gospel? How many forget about the power of the glory of Jesus? J. A. Medders is on a mission to help Christians remember that the power that raised Jesus from the dead is also a power for our everyday lives. Medders has penned forty-four brief but powerful devotions, each around seven hundred words. These small meditations kindle a passion to worship Jesus, constantly driving the reader back to the power of the cross and the empty tomb. Readers hoping to live a "spiritual" life without Jesus will not find refuge here. They will instead be confronted, challenged, and ultimately reoriented to the true North of Christianity--Christ Himself.

Good Devotional  Jul 23, 2016
Gospel Formed, by J.A.
Medders.
Refreshing, devotions to keep Jesus at the for front of our minds and heart.
I loved reading this book, seeking and pursuing the gospel of Christ through the word.
I highly recommend it.
I received a copy of this book from the Book Club Network for my honest review.

Live in Christ, Him in You  Jun 28, 2016
This book does an important service by explaining how to do life as the subtitle indicates: Living a Grace-Addicted, Truth-Filled, Jesus-Exalting Life. The author uses easy to understand expressions and infuses his writing with his American cultural awareness to engage the reader. Most chapters are short and designed for reading one per day.

As I read, I had a number of aha! moments. My eyes opened to a more positive and joyful understanding of some Scriptures. The pure focus on Jesus in the book gives great refreshment for those who may have gotten off on other tangents in their faith life.

The author relates how he went about busyness in the church for a number of years without really having it all centered on Jesus. He does not want others to be losing out on the main thing by getting sidelined on other things. This section will be helpful for those needing to reset their focus.

As an example of one aha! moment I experienced in my reading, the author explains how communion is a celebration and needs not be treated as a dreary event in church. Those receiving the bread and wine should be joyful for the new life in Christ. Remember Him in joy!

I also appreciated the author's writing about being missional in our own communities. We who have Christ in us are all evangelists. He explains that we need to rely on the power of the Holy Spirit to boldly share the gospel that we are reluctant to share in our own weakness.

This book contains so much more. I am thankful to the author, publisher, and bookfun.org for giving me the book in exchange for an honest review. I believe all Christians will be affected in a positive way by reading this book.

Lots of good stuff  Nov 17, 2015
This book is a wake up to what we already know but the author gives you many new ways to think about the Gospel or be reminded about the Gospel
I love the energy you can hear in the writing, he is excited about Jesus, as we all should be.
By far my favorite chapter was “Worship is War.” I’m sure because I am a worship leader this chapter had a great impact on me. If I could read the whole chapter to my congregation I would. For now I will share a paragraph with you from p. 60-61:
“When you sing at your church, are you actually singing or just moseying along? If you stand on Sundays dull-eyed and dragging your vocal cords on the floor, then wake up to the realness of Christ, his blood, your enemy, and victory in Jesus. This is why I advocate for loud singing (Zeph. 3:14-15). War isn’t quiet. No soldier mumbles on the battlefield — and especially not at the victory party. Belt out the glory of Christ. And know that our Champion sings loudly over us (Zeph. 3:17)”
Love that and our churches need to hear that, be reminded of that.
If you liked that then you will love this book, it is full of powerfully stirring words that will remind you of the greatness of God.

A copy of this book was given to me through The Book Club Network Inc. in exchange for an honest review.

Gospel Formed by J. A. Medders  Nov 13, 2015
Gospel Formed is a biblically-based, refreshing devotional filled with encouragement and Scriptural verses to challenge you to find the power of the Gospel—with Jesus Christ the focus in your life. The chapters are short and are broken into parts with different topics:
-Part 1: the Gospel Starting Block
-Part 2: What is Gospel Worship?
-Part 3: What is Gospel Identity?
-Part 4: What is Gospel Community?
-Part 5: What is Gospel Mission?
These short chapters are chuck full of life-giving bits that will leave you thoughtful about what you just read; are inspiring, funny, some more serious and challenging to the reader. I found part 2, What is Gospel Worship, especially meaningful—showing the many aspects of worship, some I had not considered as worship before. Worshiping God is very important to me and I found this chapter inspiring. For only 200 pages, this biblically-based, Christ-centered book glorifies God on each page as well as renewing the reader. A great devotional.

~I received a copy of this book from the Book Club Network (www.bookfun.org) and Kregel Publications for my honest review~

Refreshing devotion  Nov 4, 2015
This little devotional is so refreshing. To read the stories that I thought I knew from a new perspective is always amazing. Each of the chapters are short and cover different topics. The different sections are:
1. The Gospel Starting Block
2.What is Gospel Worship
3. What is Gospel Identity
4. What is Gospel Community
5. What is Gospel Mission

So as is evident from these sections, this book is based on the Gospel and Jesus Christ.

I would recommend this to old or new Christians.

I was given this book by bookfun.org and Kregel Publications in exchange for my honest review.

A Devotional Guide to Walking Closer with Jesus  Oct 23, 2015
There are 27 chapters which can be read a chapter a day as a devotion. The Forward discussing the Gospel is a lengthy description of what the Gospel is, how it works, etc. Each day begins with verses, used along with the study of the word about the Gospel. Jesus is to be put first, as He should be, and each day the study is to help you to know Him more, love Him more, worship Him more, to put Him first in your life.
I too, was a pew rat. We thought the church was our home away from home. And, yes, even after all those years at the church, in the church, I too, still missed what christianity was all about. I know now that christianity is a relationship with Christ, not a religion.
There are so many good things to read in this book, you will probably have to read it more than once, like me.
I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a good devotion book to use with their Bible, and to all who would just like to read the book to glean all they can from it's pages.
I received this book from bookfun.org in exchange for an honest review.

An excellent book about living out the gospel!  Oct 17, 2015
This book focuses on the gospel of Jesus Christ and what it really means to live the Christian life. He shows us what's really important and reminds us how it was when we first were saved. He talks about grace and truth. That is what the whole Christian life is really about!

J. A. Medders writes in a very easy to read style. The chapters are broken up into bite-size pieces so this is very good to read just one chapter a day or read it the whole way through! It is great to use as a devotional.

I would recommend this to anyone that is wanting to deepen their spiritual life. I received this book from bookfun for my honest opinion.

Renewing Your Faith  Oct 10, 2015
You are in for a spritual renewing as you read this very life changing book. Growing up as a preacher's kid, I can totally relate to his description of a pew rat. I went to church every time the doors were open. I acted prim and proper and did all the right things. However, I didn't grasp the concept of what being a Christian was. As the author explains,"Without the gospel, we lack the proper understanding of any doctrine , and especially a robust knowing of God himself." We need to keep Christ as the center and glorify Him.

This book has so many profound nuggets that I couldn't put it down. It has energized me, opened my eyes to the fact that even though we may drift away from Him, His arms are wide open. He is ready to embrace us, and welcome us back with His unconditional love.

Worship has always been very special to me. It is my time to get lost in His presence and forget everyone and everything around me. I now understand that as we worship, we are being prepared to hear the incredible Word. The words written about the gospel in this book is described by, " the gospel burrows deep into your heart, your joy will be inexpressible , uncontainable, and completely understandable- because Jesus is incredible."

Just as parents are excited to hear from their children, God wants to hear from us. He wants us to spend time with Him, talk to Him, and have a deep relationship with Him. If we can commit ourselves to Him, the enemy has no way into our lives. It is also important to surround ourselves with "people who aren't fenced in, friends who have the right to speak into your life at any time about anything. You need other Christians who are willing to say the hard things, ones who are ready to speak the truth in love." It may not be easy to hear the truth from your friends, but it is important to have accountability with others. They are there to encourage you, speak truth and love you.

As we renew our relationship with God, we need to be out sharing who He is with others. We are called 'to be His hands and feet" , not to sit around and keep the gospel to ourselves. Thank you for writing such an incredible book that stirs us to the core and fills us with new energy as we go out and spread the Good News to others.

I received a copy of this book from The BookClub Network for an honest review.

Seeking to be a Gospeler  Sep 18, 2015
“A gospel-formed life has Jesus as our message, our motivation, our model, and our means. All of this matters because the worship of Jesus is the goal of the gospel,” J.A. Medders writes in his book, Gospel Formed: Living a Grace-Addicted, Truth-Filled, Jesus-Exalting Life.

~ What ~
This two hundred page paperback targets those interested in being gospel-centered with Christ as the focal point in their lives. After a forward by Jared C. Wilson and acknowledgments, it is divided into five parts of twenty-seven chapters with a conclusion and no index or reference section. The English Standard Version and New Living Translation of the Holy Bible are referenced.

The author reiterates the secret to growth in Christ is Christ, not ourselves. Focusing on worship and singing, he discusses feats of Christ throughout the Bible and how we can be gospel-centered by falling in love with Him again. Gospel worship, gospel identity, gospel community, and gospel mission are evaluated.

~ Why ~
My favorite part of the book was the short but meaningful, responsive readings to remind oneself that we have it all through Jesus. With some humor and dry wit, the book includes written out Bible verses as well as Bible characters such as Peter and Paul.

~ Why Not ~
The book does contain many eclectic topics to correlate our relationship with God. From birdwatchers, the kamikaze worm, and the writer’s hatred of Pepsi, it also refers to Banksy the violinist, Dumbo, and The Wizard of Oz. Although humorous at times, some readers may feel the personal references detract from concentrating on the Gospel.

~ Who ~
As a lead pastor in Texas, J.A. Medders has written for the Council on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood, Gospel-Centered Discipleship, Church Leaders, and more.

~ Wish ~
On a minor note and not affecting the rating, I wish all pronouns of God were capitalized for reverence. It would be a nice touch to have a bullet-point summary at the end of each chapter to review.

~ Want ~
If you are looking for book that helps you look at your relationship with Jesus as He being the center of everything, it will remind you that our purpose on earth is to glorify Him by becoming a “gospeler.”

Thanks to the Book Club Network for offering this book to read and review for my honest opinion.

That which you have believed, and re-believed....  Feb 13, 2015
Robert Farrar Capon once described the Gospel as "two-hundred proof Grace– bottle after bottle of pure distillate of Scripture, one sip of which would convince anyone that God saves us single-handedly.... a flat announcement that the saved were home before they started.
Grace has to be drunk straight: no water, no ice, and certainly no ginger ale..."

This book is a whack upside the head and a kind hand on the shoulder all at once. It's a shout "Hey, over here!" and it's a whisper- "Look, here it is."
And all of it points to that Gospel, the one that will make you drunk.

"Go back to the Gospel - again. Not for conversion, but for comfort. Jesus' death and resurrection is a one time event, but we believe it more than once- we believe it and re-believe it every day."

Ok, so you're not a "Good Christian."
You have a Good Christ, and that's all you need.
Look at what He did and take it to heart. Place who He is at the core of who you are.

Ok, so it is as bad as you think it is and they are out to get you.
You have a Christ who shall never leave you nor forsake you, so the fear may come but it will not defeat you.

Ok, so you fail yourself over and over. (Left on my own, I produce darkness and death inside.)
Yet you and I have Life in Him, and it's the imperishable kind. The forever kind.

The life-blood of soul health and the heartbeat of holiness is resolutely believing Truth over and over.
No matter what we feel like, no matter what the world looks like.

I may think I "got" the Gospel years ago, but what if the Gospel permeates my Every Day, soaking into me and dying me bright with its colors?

"Do you want to go deep? Center your life on the Gospel by supergluing the glories of grace to your heart, head, and hands- daily. Recover the Gospel- have a personal Reformation by preaching to yourself." ~ J. A. Medders

To that end- preaching to myself- I think I'll be keeping this book close through 2015.
Thank you Kregel Publishing for my review copy.

Invigorating and uplifting  Jan 13, 2015
This is a great book to carry with you in the car to read while you have a couple minutes waiting to pick up children from practice, or while waiting at the doctor's office. Each reading is only a few pages long, but they really make you think and meditate on how you are living your life.

I found that after I read, I would think about it for awhile. I am not sure that there is any new information included in the book, but it does make you think about old information in a fresh, new way. It has the benefit of taking verses that you are already familiar with (maybe too familiar with), and looking at them differently. It is a good reminder of how we should live our daily lives.

Medders writing style is engaging and down-to-earth, which always makes it fun to read a book. Some of his anecdotes made me smile, but they all made me think. This book isn't at all dry or discouraging, it is invigorating and uplifting.

If you are looking for a short book filled with readings that will fill you in a short time, this is a great choice. If you have more time, you can spend more time reading, but I found it perfect to read a section in the car and then spend the rest of the day thinking it over. You could also use it as a structured devotional book and read a section each day.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Kregel Publications in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.
