Overview
A spunky young widow hires a farmhand with a bad reputation to help her get her cotton to Jefferson to meet the wagon train, and sparks fly?but can she love a man who doesn?t love the Lord?

Susannah Abbot Baylor reluctantly hires Henry Buckmeyer to help her along the Jefferson Trace, the hard stretch of land between her Texas farm and the cotton market, where she is determined to get a fair price for her crop. It?s been a rough year, and she?s in danger of losing the land her husband left to her and the children, but she?ll need help getting both of her wagons to Jefferson safely. She knows Henry?s reputation as a layabout and is prepared for his insolence, but she is not expecting his irresistible good looks or his gentle manner. Soon they are entwined in a romantic relationship that only gets more complicated when Susannah learns that Henry doesn?t know God the way she does. Dangers arise on the road?but none as difficult as the trial her heart is going through.

Will Susannah and Henry?s love overcome their differences? And will she get her crop safely to the cotton market with enough money to save the farm? In this heartening and adventurous tale, a young woman?s fortitude, faith, and heart are put to the ultimate test.

Reviews - What do customers think about Vow Unbroken?

Captivating story  May 25, 2015
This entertaining western captured my attention from the beginning, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it through the end. I very much admire Susanna Baylor and all that she accomplishes during her years of widowhood. Not many women of that day would have been able to put forth the hard labor and accept the responsibility that she chose to take upon herself. Her strong will and self-reliance continue to work against her in relationships, but without them, she would have faltered and lost her land many years prior. Sue struggles, as we all do, with our character flaws, but we see glimpses of the spiritual and psychological growth that is taking place in her life, as she strives to find a balance between being a woman and being “the boss.” All the main characters, in addition to Sue, are well developed and are integral to the story.

This wagon-train type story is much more interesting than some, since it takes place in Texas, rather than on a long haul from the Mid-West to the West Coast. Each day brings new challenges and often new people into the scene. The people and incidents seem very realistic, and are written in an engaging fashion.

Although the romantic thread, based on the vows, is a consistent thread throughout the novel, it seems to me that the story deals more with Susanna and her struggle to survive in Texas as a widowed woman in 1832.

I’d recommend Vow Unbroken to readers who enjoy books with a strong female character set in frontier times.

Excellent! Exciting! Engaging!  Feb 18, 2015
I'm not sure what I expected from this book, but I must say that I loved it. It's a very well written story about a widow and her struggle to get her crop of cotton to market. Susannah Baylor faces one challenge after another after hiring a man, Henry Buckmeyer, to take them to the buyers who had just pulled out. The journey takes them across dangerous territory.

Was it wise to hire someone that she doesn't really know? Will they survive the perilous trials that they face? Can they reach the buyers before they are gone?

There are so many things that I truly loved about this story. Number one, being Susannah, strong faith and need to trust that the Lord knows best, especially when it comes to being unequally yoked with an unbeliever. Her stubbornness made me laugh a few times. Sue's grit was admirable and made me proud.

My favorite character was Rebecca, Susannah's daughter. She had a heart of gold and did what she could for others without them knowing. That little girl stole my heart from the beginning.

I recommend this book to those who enjoy historical romance with some good Christian lessons thrown in.

I received a copy of Vow Unbroken from the author. I was not asked to write a review, but feel this book deserves a shout out, as it is an excellent read. I intend to purchase the rest of the books in the series and look forward to reading them, as well.

Vow Unbroken  Mar 10, 2014
I so enjoy a good historical romance, especially one that has strong characters and plenty of interesting twists in the story. Vow Unbroken is set in the 1800s on the rugged Texas prairie. From the very beginning we get to see the trials that the young widow, Susannah Baylor, deals with. She desperately needs to sell her cotton crop so that she can continue to raise her daughter and nephew on her own. Because of a swindler she is forced to make the decision to transport her cotton to market by herself. Due to the sound advice of her dear friend she reluctantly hires Henry Buckmeyer to help her make the treacherous journey.

When the story began I just thought that Sue was rude because she was a single woman having to negotiate in a man's world. I was wrong, she was an absolute shrew throughout the book. I kept wanting to warm up to her. I would begin to think she was going to make some headway and then boom, she was right back to her awful self. I think what really frustrated me was that she regarded herself as a devout Christian but was disdainful of Henry whom she regarded as a heathen. Yet Henry the heathen had better manners!

As much as I didn't like Sue, I really enjoyed the other main characters. Henry had such amazing patience with Sue. You knew he had to be completely smitten with her because anyone else would have just walked away. Sue's young daughter Becky was very precocious but her antics still made you smile. Sue's nephew Levi was, in my opinion, the character that came across as the most genuine. Ms. McAdoo did a great job of capturing the surliness of a teenager one moment and then the earned adoration the next.

Even though I'm a bit harsh on the main female character, I really did enjoy this story. It was full of danger, adventure, laughter and love. If you like a nice historical romance you're bound to enjoy this one. I'm really looking forward to Ms. McAdoo's next book, Heart Stolen, which is the continuation of this novel focusing in on Levi.

I received a copy of this book to facilitate my review.

Western Romance With God's Blessing  Feb 16, 2014
A Lone Star novel, this three hundred and sixty-eight page paperback targets those who enjoy American western romances, especially taking cotton to market in Texas during the eighteen hundreds. With no profanity or sex scenes but some violence, it would be geared toward teenagers to adult aged readers. After thirty-two chapters devoted to the story, acknowledgements, fifteen group discussion questions, three book club topics, and a conversation with the author end the book.

When Susannah was nineteen, she left her family and married without her father’s blessings. One year later, she found herself widowed and pregnant, living in Texas. Feeling responsible for her husband and brother-in-law’s deaths, she is determined to run the large farm on her own, supporting her daughter and nephew.

With a shyster trying to take advantage of her annual sale of cotton, she decides to take the product to Jefferson to hopefully meet buyers who will give her a higher price. Unable to transport the large load via wagons pulled by mules by herself, she hires Henry Buckmeyer, a layabout heathen.

Thirty-four year old Henry gladly comes to Sue’s aide, especially because he has wares to sell and does not mind working for the beautiful woman, having noticed her four years ago. Immediately sensing her attraction, he becomes wary of her questioning and second-guessing any suggestions he makes. Aware of the widely-known vow the woman made in remarrying only with her father’s blessing, he treads lightly as he lets her and her family melt his heart.

Traveling in close quarters, the four individuals, as well as the man’s dog, start off on a rocky path, learning to value each other in unexpected ways. In addition to her vow, Sue’s promise to not be unequally yoked with an unbeliever forces her to listen to God’s direction as they get closer and closer to their destination.

McAdoo writes with spiritual purpose and determination, developing her characters with raw, down-to-earth humanity of falling short of the glory of God as she weaves a tale of teamwork, commitment, and romance.

Great clean read  Feb 6, 2014
I admired the research the author had to do to write this book. I love the vivid descriptions of the location. It was such a sweet and romantic, historical. The characters of Susannah and Henry were great to get to know and read how they grew throughout the novel. I believe this is a great clean and inspirational read. Recommended.
