Overview
When Iola Anne Poole, an old-timer on Hatteras Island, passes away in her bed at ninety-one, the struggling young mother in her rental cottage, Tandi Jo Reese, finds herself charged with the task of cleaning out Iola?s rambling Victorian house.Running from a messy, dangerous past, Tandi never expects to find more than a temporary hiding place within Iola?s walls, but everything changes with the discovery of eighty-one carefully decorated prayer boxes, one for each year, spanning from Iola?s youth to her last days. Hidden in the boxes is the story of a lifetime, written on random bits of paper--the hopes and wishes, fears and thoughts of an unassuming but complex woman passing through the seasons of an extraordinary, unsung life filled with journeys of faith, observations on love, and one final lesson that could change everything for Tandi.

Reviews - What do customers think about The Prayer Box
Carolina Heirlooms Novel Series ?

One of the Best Books This Year!  Mar 13, 2015
This story was so beautiful and captured my heart!

Iola's story was amazing! Like Tandi, I felt as if Iola is a long lost friend that is so beautiful inside and out! I felt like I was sneaking off to come read more of her story like Tandi when she was sneaking away to come read more letters out of the prayer box in the blue room (when we both should be cleaning)! The heart that Iola had for the families of the Outer Banks was so mind changing for me because in so many little (and big) ways she helped her community without being known. She didn't brag or boast about it, but humbly worked for her Father with joy. Not only that, she prayed over these families and her community with a deep love that comes from the Father. She was so inspiring to me with her words of wisdom that God gave her as well as through the conservations she had with her sister-friend!

Tandi's story was so heart-wrenching in many places! It was hard to see her want to stop old habits and make a new lifestyle for herself as well as her family, but having the pain and anger from the past keep haunting her. At first I didn't really like Tandi, but as I learned her story along side Iola's I started to soften towards her and ached for the way she viewed herself. Always thinking she wasn't good enough and believing whatever trash talk people told her, especially Gina (I was so glad she stood up to her near the end). I felt that as Tandi learned from Iola that I was too. I was on the same journey with her of believing the words God tells us, rather then the negative words people tell us. Also seeing the river of grace that is constantly flowing around us.

Beside learning so much from these two stories, I learned so much about what prayer boxes can do in one's life. I have a prayer journal, but learning about where and how prayer boxes originated from the in "Note From the Author" makes me want to start a new tradition in my family! This story definitely inspired me in more ways than one!

My rating: 5 out of 5 stars (on a side note, the ending was perfect)!

Beatifully Written  Jun 1, 2014
This story was a little slow to start for me. I had read The Sea Glass Sisters awhile ago which is the prequel to The Prayer Box and I was trying to figure out how the two books related to one another. Around page 60, I was so hooked into Tandi's story that I stopped thinking about the other book and wanted to find out if Tandi would overcome her personal demons.

This is a very sad book in many ways. Tandi's childhood and life up until this point was tragic and the she was unable to make better choices because she had nothing to believe in, most of all believing in herself as a worthwhile person. Readers see her subjecting her own children to a neglectful childhood, just as her parents did to her.

However, this is also a book filled with hope. Readers see through Iola's story that times change and that all is not what it appears at times. Readers are reminded that sometimes people just need a little help and an opportunity for hope to change their lives. The best part of this book for me was the way that the Christian characters in this book didn't try to improve Tandi's circumstances by inviting her to church and leaving it at that. They loved her where she was and demonstrated God's love.

This is a really great, inspiring book. Wingate expertly weaves a plot with characters that readers really get to know and love. Her descriptions of the setting pull you in so that you feel like you are really there in the beach community, seeing the old house, the sea glass, the sand, and the lingering damage from hurricanes.

If you are looking for a book to pull you in for a couple hours, this is a great one. Even after the end, the story and characters stay with you - it is that good!

Superbly written  Feb 11, 2014
What a wonderful novel. I can't say enough about how much I enjoyed it.

The characters were true-to-life and had flaws that we can relate to. Tandi has been through so much and her lack of self-esteem is the result. Running away from her past is one more struggle that she has to endure. Can she make a new start on Hatteras Island?

Iola Anne Poole was a mysterious woman that kept to herself during her later years in life. Tandi finds Iola passed away in her home next to the cottage she rents from her. There are so many mysteries. When Tandi is left to sort through Iola's belongings will it create more questions? Will Tandi be able to find hope through what she discovers?

This is the first book, written by Lisa Windgate, that I've read. I am happy to have found another author to add to my list of favorites.

True source of love  Dec 7, 2013
This was a powerfully emotional story of what it means to be family. How much of our life is defined by our blood ties? To what extend do we owe loyalty and forgiveness to our blood relatives? Is it possible to break from the past we inherit and create our own future? What is sisterhood of the heart rather than blood? All are effectively explored in this novel of the lives of two women who have never met.

Tandi is reeling from years of bad choices stemming from a troubled, unhappy childhood and her desperate search for love and financial security through her relationships with men. Broke and alone except for the children who have long ago learned not to count on her, she comes to the Outer Banks and a tiny rental cottage in hopes of starting over once again. She discovers the dead body of the elderly woman,Iola Ann Poole, in the big house next to her and is asked to clean out the house of its junk and filth in payment of the back rent she owes. Here she discovers a closet filled with boxes---one for each year-created and filled by Iola Ann’s thoughts ad prayers as she faithfully wrote to her Heavenly Father. Tandi comes to know that lonely little girl Iola was and grows fascinated with learning her story as box after box reveals Iola’s secret longings and her faith in the Father who cares for her as her earthly one never did. Slowly, the lessons gleaned from her reading of Iola’s letters to God cause change in Tandi’s life,
Great story of family love and finding one’s way.

unconditional love  Nov 7, 2013
The Prayer Box was such a phenomenal read that I had to put it down periodically just to pray. The story of a single mom trying to find a new beginning and healing will bring tears of joy, sorrow and revelation to the reader. When Tandi finds herself trying desperately to start a new beginning, she is drawn to the letters of an old woman she’s never known. The letters speak directly to God and in them, Tandi finds counseling for her own issues. The unconditional love she has never known, suddenly comes through Christians all around her who demonstrate what love should look like. Tandi and her children find a place of healing, purpose and a bright new future. This book is a must read!

The Prayer Box  Sep 1, 2013
The Prayer Box by Lisa Wingate

First wanted to read this book as part of the summer reads for the whole family campaign by JKS communications.

Love the setting for this in the outer banks and she recalls being there with her grandparents, closeby the house that was featured in 'Nights in Rodanthe'. There is also talk of the ship that didn't make ti to shore and the wild ponies.

She has run away from her husband in TX after having suffered an injury from falling from a horse-and she's attempting to get off of pain killers and just drives til she reaches the end of the road. She meets a 90 year old woman who rents her the bungalow out front and she and her teen daughter and younger son live with her.

She's trying to get a job with no luck as it's only April-tourist season won't start for another month or so. After she finds the old woman dead and learns the church will inherit the house and bungalow she agrees to clean the house for the church in lieu of payment for the bungalow.

Tandi also has met a guy there, Ross who house sits and does long haul trucking.

She is determined to just rid the house of all personal possessions til she reads a few of the letters the woman had written to her father. Then she discovers a rosary and knows she must go through every box before just tossing them out.

She has been feeding the cat but she has no idea how he gets in/out of the house and water in the bathroom is running at times-almost like a ghost wants her to do something n a certain room upstairs.

She's been finding so many clues as to who Iola Anne really was, and Zoey her daughter comes down with an illness that will keep her from her many jobs.

Really liked how this book moved along-never a dull moment. Troubles arise when her sister tracks her down and she does cause trouble...

Loved most the seashell store and all the design work, pink and light blue seaglass and what those working there mean to Tandi.

Few characters that are easy to keep track of while others are introduced.

Loved how she fought for what she believed in...

She feels a bond knowing others had to raise her and she finds out why...I liked this book so much I did buy 4 other books by this author.

I received this book from JKS Communications in exchange for my honest review.

Liked this book so much I also go her other works and the prequel to this one: Sea Glass Sisters.

The Prayer Box  Aug 25, 2013
When we are young we are subject to the decisions of our parents. As we grow older we are responsible for our own choices. Many times however we fall into the trap of doing what we know. That is the plight of Tandy Jo Reese. She's grown up with completely dysfunctional parents and ultimately wound up in the foster care system. Things began looking up for her but she continually reverts to doing what she has grown up learning.

We pick up the story at the point where she has escaped with her two children from an abusive relationship. She has come to Hatteras Island to start over but starting over isn't always the easiest. At the beginning of the story I just did not like Tandy. She's a terribly negligent mother just like her own mother. Then Providence intervenes in the form of an old lady dying and a house needing cleaned out.

Iola Anne Poole has lead a quietly faithful life in her family's home on Hatteras Island. Upon her death her home begins to divulge her secrets to Tandy and that is what begins to make the difference to Tandy and eventually her children.

This is a beautifully written story about the power of grace, both given and received. One faithfully lived life can and does impact those around them in ways that go beyond what is visible. The power of the prayers of one person can reach and impact so many people. You will walk away from this novel pondering how your life impacts others now and how it will influence generations to come.

On a side note there is a secondary story of sorts going on over at the Seashell Shop. Treat yourself to the full story by reading the prequel, The Sea Glass Sisters: Prelude to the Prayer Box. It is available as an ebook for all the popular devices.

The Prayer Box is Poetry on a Page!  Aug 25, 2013
Tandi Jo Reese was running. Running from a controlling husband and a dangerous past. Running from an addiction to pain killers. She's also running from a broken past, a father who was an alcoholic and a family life that left nothing to be desired. Odd how she winds back up on Hatteras Island, the place where it all began, the place of her youth. Tandi felt drawn to the Island for reasons she couldn't explain. Moving into the cottage house of Iola Anne Poole was just the beginning of a new life for her and her two kids. When Iola dies suddenly, Tandi is given the option of living rent free in exchange for cleaning out Iola's stately old mansion and she quickly agrees. When she finds 81 prayer boxes in the closet of the "Blue Room" she realizes she's not just on a mission, but a life's journey. As the life of Iola Anne Poole unfolds, Tandi's life begins to change. With the help of Paul Chastain, a teacher at the local school, she sets out to prove something to the people of the Island. Can she find the life she's always wanted hidden in the pages of those old letters? Can she find true love amidst the storm?

I loved Tandi Jo's character. She had been dealt a hard life with nothing ever turning out the way she had hoped. Memories from the past gave her the mindset that no one could ever really love her. But she was a fighter and when she got knocked down she always came up swinging. She was determined not to let the things in life beat her down. She was a strong woman that had simply made some bad choices but when Iola's letters started taking root in her soul she was like a flower opening up to the sun. She was at her best, I think, in difficult situations and I admired her determination.

Paul Chastain was my idea of a true hero. He sat quietly on the outskirts until he was needed. But, when he was needed, he rose to the occassion. He was a very caring and sensitive man and he always seemed to know what Tandi needed the most. He never tore her down but, instead, always built her up. He was her very own champion, always rooting for her on the sidelines. I think I fell in love just a little with his character.

The Prayer Box is such a beautiful yet heart-wrenching story. A tears-rolling-down-your-face story but, at the same time, it is filled with hope, love, faith. A story that really speaks to your soul. Lisa Wingate's descriptions are so vivid you feel like you're a part of the story. Iola's letters to her Heavenly Father are like poetry on a page and showcase Lisa's God-given gift of writing. It is a story that I will read several times over. If you liked The Wednesday Letters by Jason F. Wright you will love this book. I recommend it VERY HIGHLY!

Young Women Finds Redemption From Past  Jul 26, 2013
Title: The Prayer Box
Author: Lisa Wingate
Publisher: Tyndale House Publishers, Inc.
ISBN: 978-1-4143-8825-0

“It hurt to read the words of the little girl who’d been sent away, who was alone and afraid that the people who were supposed to love her had instead forgotten about her. It dredged up too many memories, unearthed feelings I didn’t want to remember, scenes from my life that I’d been trying to bury for thirty-three years, pain that was pointless now,” Tandi confides in Lisa Wingate’s novel, The Prayer Box.

This Christian contemporary women’s fictional paperback is three hundred and ninety-six pages, targeted toward readers who like pure romance blended in with leaving the past memories and starting over in one’s life. With no profanity or lewd scenes, it could be read by mature teenagers and older ages due to its topics of premarital pregnancy and racism.

Secretive single mother of two, Tandi Jo Reese has left her past far behind, buried in painful childhood and adult memories. When she and her fourteen year old daughter and nine year old son rent the cottage on a large run-down estate in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, once again they try to start over and conceal who they really are.

After six weeks of renting and behind on her rent, Tandi notices her next door landlord’s cat with one bitten ear and a shepherd’s hook tail wandering around aimlessly. Not seeing any movement in the big Victorian house, Tandi timidly enters the home, only to find ninety-one year old Iola Anne Poole dead in an upstairs bedroom.

Since the weathered property has been donated to the nearby church according to Iola’s wishes, Brother Joe asks Tandi to start cleaning out the dilapidated house to offset the rent. When Tandi finds eighty-one creatively decorated boxes stacked in the bedroom closet, she becomes mesmerized in Iola’s past life of heartbreak, hardships and heroism through each boxes’ yearly contents and written letters.

The more Tandi correlates her similarities to Iola’s life, the more the hardened, broken young mother softens and comes to terms with her own choices and how she is raising her children. With wrong relationships with men, a daughter who is unhappy, her quiet, shy son and a selfish sister, they are forced to grow and adjust to having someone care about them.

Through the tears of broken relationships, sorrows of the past and the new-found friendships of the small town of Fairhope, Wingate does an excellent job honing in on how our past sins can be forgiven and forgotten by God and others. When one can learn from the past and change, she can become hope and help to others in need, especially when trusting and praying to God for His redemption.
