Item description for Jesus You Cant Ignore by John MacArthur...
Best-selling author John MacArthur gives readers a fresh look at how Jesus addressed attacks against the truth. Meek and mild. Politically correct. A great teacher. These are the popular depictions of Jesus. But they aren't the complete picture. Maybe because it's uncomfortable, or maybe because it's inconvenient, Christians and non-Christians alike are overlooking the fierceness of the Savior, His passionate mission to make the Gospel clear and bring people into the Kingdom of God. A mission that required he sometimes raise his voice and sometimes raise a whip. In the much-needed message in The Jesus You Can't Ignore, renowned Bible teacher and best-selling authorJohn MacArthur reintroduces the compelling and often unsettling passion of Jesus' ministry. MacArthur points to the compelling picture of the real Jesus the world is so eager to gloss over. And he calls readers to emulate Jesus' commitment to further the kingdom by confronting lies and protecting the truth of God.

Reviews - What do customers think about Jesus You Cant Ignore?
 | Jesus, an example to Christians, does not change his message Aug 26, 2010 |
| The accounts of Jesus’ life and ministry are packed with truth, and MacArthur uncovers much of its hidden aspects. More importantly, he emphasizes the obvious truth that Jesus opposed the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees. They were Israel’s religious leaders, but they only practiced the letter, and not the spirit, of the law. This book does through a detailed account of Jesus’ ministry and of how he publicly opposed the Sanhedrin’s false teaching.
This book is very relevant to Christianity all around the world. It exposes the Emergent church and opposes it and those who support it with the truth that Christ condemned its kind of teaching. The book took accounts from all four gospels and was as thorough as a book its size could be. It portrays Christ not to be a merciful, loving God in every situation, but also truthful, just, and full of wrath toward unrepentant sinners. This book opens your eyes to Christ, and how He forces you not to ignore Him, but either repent or oppose. | | | | God of Old Testament Apr 22, 2010 |
This is a groundbreaking book in the sense that it is an opposite of what many people write regarding Christ. He is not painted in a one-dimensional sense as a compassionate, weak Mother Teresa like figure. Rather, Christ is portrayed as a strong advocate of truth, standing up to lies and false teachings that we can all learn a little from at times.
I highly recommend this book. It's entertaining, and it's insightful. | | | | Insightful Apr 22, 2010 |
| The Jesus you can't ignore proved to be more insightful than I expected it to be. As a Master of Divinity myself, I can say that John MacArthur clearly has a great working knowledge of Biblical times and customs as well as the inner workings of the Pharisaical structure of Jesus' time. I expected what I usually find in books like this: quotations from Scripture about well known events in Jesus' life. What a treat for me to find myself having to question my own understandings and theological conclusions in light of MacArthur's presentation. While I didn't agree with all of his conclusions, I found myself at least considering all of them. This tour into Roman and ancient Jewish thinking and the customs and assumptions of the times makes this book well worth its place in your library. I recommend this book even if you, like me, have an expert command of the Bible and Church history. | | | | I want to read it again! Apr 17, 2010 |
One phenomenal book. John MacArthur is known for not compromising and being direct and honest. Interestingly, he writes this book to show how direct and honest Jesus was with the Jewish religious leaders. The book exposes the emergent church and shows how Jesus would have done the same. MacArthur makes it clear that changing the message to be more appealing is not what we are called to do; we are called to teach truth. The book talks about how Jesus would not change the message to meet the people - he changed the people so they could embrace the message. Loved the book! I need to read it again! | | | | Some things to think about, but ultimately even this man doesnt understand christ Apr 15, 2010 |
| While I definitely think that the Jesus that is portrayed by the church and by the media and our cultural perception definitely misses the true spirit of Christ, I feel that this man also misses the mark. A decent book what can I say well written, but I give it 2 stars because I disagree with its message. | | | | Jesus is no milquetoast Mar 18, 2010 |
This is my first read of one of John MacArthur's books, but his reputation as an excellent bible teacher and expositional preacher was well known to me. His writing accomplishes just what the title claims--presenting Jesus in a full-orbed and captivating manner that you can't ignore. MacArthur shows how evangelicalism has imbibed too deeply of political correctness and false tolerance, and consequently has tried to water Jesus down. The picture of Jesus that is often presented is a bland, two-dimensional milquetoast of a man, who never challenged anyone's thinking, never threatened the status quo or ruffled any feathers. In this way of thinking, all the controversial or provocative statements of Jesus are by-passed, ignored, or explained away. We're left with such a mild-mannered and harmless Jesus, that one should struggle to explain why He was put to death at all. Such a Jesus is hardly the compelling figure that simultaneously drew believers to Him that were willing to die rather than abandon faith, as well as create opposition that was so fierce as to persecute both Him and His disciples even to death.
MacArthur then proceeds to highlight numerous accounts from the life of Jesus that are often missing from our preaching and teaching. He fills the picture of Jesus back in, to show how He could be both fiercely condemning of hypocrisy and religious posturing, and at the same time remarkably gentle and compassionate to the downtrodden and the humble. He shows how Jesus put a premium on the truth, which is all-to-often lacking in the church today. Only by viewing the whole picture of Jesus are we finally able to see how He could be so brutalized, hated, and killed by His enemies. Seeing how He cleansed the temple several times, how He provoked deep thinking and reflection about the kingdom of God, how He violated the man-made traditions of the Sabbath, how He raised the bar impossibly high on the Law that men thought they were keeping to their own righteousness--all so that He could show them salvation was an event that could in no way depend on them or their righteousness. He drove hard with the Law to bring them to repentance of their sin and false pride, so they might seek the mercy of God in His free Gospel.
Through a complete reading of the Gospel accounts, we can begin to see what makes Jesus such a compelling person that cannot be ignored. We see why the reaction to Him was so polarized, and we find that there is finally no middle ground where one can stand. We must be for Him or against Him. One small criticism of the book was on pg. 59-60 where MacArthur's theological bias shows through, and he turns somersaults to exaplain away the clear baptismal language in John 3 and parallel passages from the Old Testament like Ezekiel 36. The suggestion that baptism is "utterly foreign to this passage" is ignoring the obvious and betrays his baptist theology. Other than this, MacArthur's work is an excellent counterbalance to the weakened view of Jesus that is so harmful to Christianity. For a world that is exceedingly sinful and strong in our sins, we need an even stronger Savior! The Bible presents that Savior to us in the full color and compelling character of Jesus. Rediscover that Jesus cradled in the pages of Scripture! | | | Write your own review about Jesus You Cant Ignore
