Item description for Hard to Believe: The High Cost and Infinite Value of Following Jesus by John MacArthur...
Popular perception of Jesus Christ is that of a tempered, genteel man who walked the earth, offering nuggets of wisdom to His followers. But what we sometimes fail to recognize is that although Jesus Christ offered a message of forgiveness, He also spoke challenging, demanding words about what being a follower of Christ requires. In contrast to the superficiality of much modern Christian teaching, Dr. John MacArthur serves up the unvarnished truth of what Christ taught and lived. In simple, compelling terms, he spells out what is required of those who would follow Him. Going beyond Jesus' life to include the crucifixion and resurrection, MacArthur shows readers that Jesus modeled the commitment and loving obedience He requires of us by making the ultimate sacrifice for humankind.

Reviews - What do customers think about Hard to Believe: The High Cost and Infinite Value of Following Jesus?
 | The hard truth Feb 13, 2007 |
| Wonderful book...we are called to stand firm in a God-centered faith in the midst of a self-centered world. | | | | Should have been titled "HARD TO READ" Jan 17, 2007 |
The first 75% of this book is so difficult to read that I'm certain the publisher asked the author to pick up the pace for the last few chapters in order to give readers something tangible. I found the first few chapters to introduce the theme that MacArthur considers most Christians to be unsaved and on their way to hell. He then spends most of the book trying to explain why that is the case. In the end, he "makes nice" and ends the book on some positive notes. I found myself wondering why MacArthur believes he is so holy and righteous, while so many other "Christians" are vile sinners, doomed to hell. Yes, I agree with most of his premises, but I found his litmus test for "true believer/false believer" to be offensive. Why is it any of our concern who is a true believer or not? That is between each person and God. We are called to preach the gospel, not to judge people by their WORKS, to determine if they are righteous enough to be called true believers. MacArthur is contradictory in this book about salvation. On the one hand, he believes the Holy Spirit leads people toward salvation, opening their hearts to the gospel message. And yet, he believes that only a few are truly saved and for some reason, he spends a LOT of time describing false believers...as if we are to identify them. To what end? To weed them out of the church? I would not recommend this book for a young Christian with a mild exposure to scripture, or you will become very discouraged.

| A Superb book. John Macarthur really shatters the notion that Christianity is easy. Backed up with plenty of scripture and personal accounts. Buy and read this book! | | | | Great Expository Presentation Oct 29, 2006 |
We may not all agree with Dr. MacArthurs dogmatic presentation of the gospel. But we must all agree that he is a blessing to the body of Christ.
"Hard to Believe" is a great witness to the pure presentation of the gospel. MacArthur has done a fantastic job! | | | | A SLAP TO THE FACE OF THE WISHY WASHY GOSPEL Jul 10, 2006 |
Today the church is plagued with wishy wasy form of a prosperity gospel that is so sanitized it no longer resembles anything found in Scripture.
With this understand Dr. MacArthur, as always, confronts this issue head on by giving a sound, loving, but bold and biblical explanaion of what it truly means to follow Christ.
If you or a loved one feel as if you are sitting in church questioning whatexactly it means to follow Christ, this book is for you!
A must read for every beleiver. It will srengthen your view of Christ's authority, and demolish this culturally induced ideal of what the gospel really is that we suffer from here in the U.S.A....in short...READ THIS!! | | | Write your own review about Hard to Believe: The High Cost and Infinite Value of Following Jesus
