Reviews - What do customers think about New Testament in Modern English?
 | The New Testament in Modern English Jan 19, 2007 |
Corrie ten Boom ( A Dutch Missionary ) opened my eyes to this wonderful translation in one of her talks. It has not left my hands since then. I have other good translations ( highly valued and read and scribbled in ) but these modern words open your ears and reveal and enlighten and make you understand. What a schock. Thank you J.B. Phillips - Thank you so much..
Max Paetzold Australia | | | | The best modern language translation Jan 15, 2007 |
| Phillips notes that since the NT was written in everyday Greek, we need to read it in everyday English. He honors the beauty of the King James Version, but notes that much of its vocabulary and even its cadence is out of date. There are other modern language translations available these days, but none matches Phillips' in the cogency, thoughtfulness, and depth of understanding. I read Greek myself, and while I would not agree with Phillips' translations at every point, it is clear that he has taken the time to engage thoughtfully and carefully with the text. Reading this translation helps me to discover new insights and new perspectives on well known passages of scripture. | | | | It's the Word of God! It is the best! Jul 31, 2006 |
| It's the Word of God! It is the best! This translation is awesome and the story behind its creation should be in Acts. I only wish he put the verse numbers in. | | | | Can't Go Wrong Here Jul 7, 2006 |
Of the couple of dozen or so modern English translations of the New Testament offered in the past half century, J.B. Philips's was one of the earliest and still remains a top contender for title of The Best Translation Available. It is a translation that is absolutely understandable, but intelligent and dignified. I say this kind of subjectively, but I think Paul and his great big brain would be pleased to see how his thought was rendered here into modern English. You won't find any of the "Gee, righteousness is like, cool!" attitude that infests the language of many modern translations, particularly those that have come down the pike in the past twenty years or so.
C.S. Lewis fans will want to know that Philips sent Lewis a draft of his work and "Jack" encouraged him to continue his translation, and eventually wrote the foreword for the first edition. Can't get a better endorsement than that!
One small quibble with some other reviewers: This is not a paraphrase! It is a full translation! Give J.B. full credit! Philips was a scholar who sat down with the best Greek manuscripts available and did his scholarly best to turn them into the language of our time. He wasn't simply rephrasing the good ol' KJV, nor was he trying to "elaborate" on the meaning of the text. It is true that he worked alone and not in a committee, which means some of his biases probably crept in somewhere. But he was a translator, not a paraphraser, nevertheless. (And anyone who has spent any time in church work knows that committees produce their own problems too.)
I don't know that I would recommend this translation (or any other) exclusively, but if you are studying the Bible, it deserves a place on your bookshelf. | | | | Phillips translation is great Bible Nov 3, 2005 |
| What can you say about the Bible? The J.B. Phillips new testament translation is a favorite of mine, and hard to get these days. Everybody sells "The Message" which is simlar, or NIV. The language here is less stilted than King James, but not chopped up like NIV or toal paraphrase, like Peterson's The Message. Praise God, it's good! | | | Write your own review about New Testament in Modern English
