Reviews - What do customers think about Wings Of Glass?

domestic abuse  Sep 1, 2014
WINGS OF GLASS is the story of a young woman who jumps from her father’s stern authority to elope with what she thought was the man of her dreams. Raised to believe a woman’s place was only to serve and obey her man and ask no questions, she finds herself trapped into an emotional and physically abusive marriage. I have been blessed with a loving husband so it is a testament to Gina Holmes's writing that I could so vividly put myself into Penny's shoes. Seeing her life as empty and hopeless, she wallows in depression. Two things change her bleak existence—she becomes pregnant after ten years of longing and her husband’s sudden blindness forces her out of her isolation when she takes a job cleaning houses.
The story is written from the point of view of her writing of his history to her baby. In the midst of her misery, God granted her reasons to look forward in that unborn child and the friendship of two delightfully different women with whom she works. Their Christian love and acceptance sweeten her life and help her see her situation through their eyes—sort of a lifeline in the midst of her struggles. It is such a beautiful story of the power of friendship, forgiveness, and faith.

a fiction story that is only too real  Oct 1, 2013
"Wings Of Glass" by Gina Holmes gets 5 stars from me. It is about the abuse Penny gets from her husband Trent. It is a hard subject to deal with but one that is a common occurrence to often. While I was reading this novel I felt like I could have been hearing the story from Penny herself. This story is written as a letter to her son. This book needs to be given to someone that is being subjected to abuse and to people that know it is happening to someone they love! I wish I could say this book is purely fictional but we all know that isn't true!

When Penny was seventeen, she ran off with Trent and her life was not easy. But when Trent is injured from a work accident and out of necessary he allowes Penny to take a job, Penny begins to see she has other options (she doesn't see these she at first) but she doesn't allow herself to really take them until it is almost too late. Finally she sees she has to change her in order to protect the most important thing in her life.
I was intrigued by the title but that is explained in the story as well!
I received this book from www.bookfun.org to read and post my honest opinion.

Amazing author - will read more of her books for sure!  Jul 29, 2013
I just finished reading Wings of Glass by Gina Holmes. Wow - What a terrific read. I have now become a fan of hers and read Oceans Crossing, and am getting ready to read Dry as Rain.

This author brings every emotion to the table when she writes. The book was about an abusive relationship and she hits it spot on. Not only does she tell the victim’s story, but she describes the journey of the abuser with such accuracy as well. Excellently written and so detailed and true to life. She doesn’t hit you over the head with spiritual elements but they are there to help you pause and think about how God really views the sufferings of people and how much He truly loves us.

As I said, I now have a new author that I will be reading everything she writes. Can’t wait to start Dry as Rain.

I received this book from bookfun.org in return for my honest opinion.

Wings of Glass  Jul 26, 2013
Domestic violence is such a difficult subject. Those of us that have never experienced it have a hard time understanding what keeps someone in that situation. Why don’t they just leave and get help? Isn’t it as simple as that?

Gina Holmes delves into the intricacies that are involved in these complex relationships. Through her written voice you are able to see what goes on in the mind of not only the perpetrator but also the victim and those that are trying to help the victim.

Trent is an unlikable person. He’s mean and deceitful when he is healthy and he’s mean and deceitful when he’s injured. The one trait that I have to admire about Penny is that she continues to cling to hope that he will improve, especially after the accident. As the story unfolds and light is shed on the darkness of their marriage we can begin to see that we’re all victims of a sin nature just waiting to be set free.

This is an emotion ridden story told by a broken momma to her son. At times it will make you want to weep and at other times it will make you want to rage at the injustice of it all. In the end I hope you will come away with a sense of hope as I did. Some things aren't set right in the way we deem it to be, but have no doubt about it, in the end all will be justified by the One who is faithful and true!

Abusive situations and women who stay in them why?  Jul 22, 2013
I liked the book from the beginning. I didn't want to stop reading it kept me pulled into find out what was gonna happen. A story of abuse. Penny marries a man thinking he is the best thing in the world. Doesn't take Trent long to show his true colors. He is a alcoholic, drug user and a womanizer. Blames everything goes wrong in his life on his wife. Penny soon find out she is gonna have a baby. Is this the kind of life she wants for the baby? No money for food Penny goes to a food pantry to get help. Plus she makes 2 friends who help her and give her a job. But Trent doesn't like that either. Then there is a murder of a woman. abuse to her friend. How much is it gonna take for Penny to wake up? The verse that came into mind when I finished this book was Proverbs 17:17. Great book I would recommend it to everyone.

Wings of Glass  Jul 22, 2013
This was a very good book. It held my attention from the very first page. I couldn't put it down!

This book centers around a woman named Penny Carson and the abuse she went through with her husband, Trent. Throughout her struggles, she meets two very different ladies. They all end up being very good friends even though they are all so different from each other. I felt like I was seeing Penny's struggles with abuse first hand. This book really opened my eyes to what some woman go through and how they are so disillusioned that they somehow deserve this!

I would recommend this book to anyone! Gina Holmes is a very good author. She made this book very easy to read.

Wings of Glass by Gina Holmes
This is a great book about being in an abusive marriage. Penny Carson is married to Trent Taylor. She fell for him when she was 17 years old and he was working for her dad. Trent was the perfect man to take her away from her overbearing unloving father. After being married he isolates her from her family and does not allow her to see or speak to them. Penny is in trouble, Trent is abusive, controlling, is an alcoholic and is an adulterer. Can an accident that leaves Trent blind be a blessing in disguise? Finally allowed to seek employment now that he can not support his family, Penny goes to work for a cleaning service. She makes two great friends. Penny does not believe in divorce so she makes excuses for not leaving. When she becomes pregnant and has a baby boy. She tries to see the best in Trent and believes he is going to change. Can he become a good father and a loving husband? Penny’s eyes are really opened when Trent’s girlfriend is murdered, and he causes her friend and baby to fall down the stairs. Will she have the courage to finally leave or will she let him completely destroy her or worse kill her and her son Manny? The author Gina Holmes did a great job while dealing with difficult subjects, such as abuse, divorce and alcohol abuse. This was the first book I read by this author but will not be the last. I was truly blessed to receive a copy of this book from The Book Club Network, for my honest review.

Dealing Biblically with Spousal Abuse  Jul 21, 2013
“I dreamed I had stained-glass wings just like her. I kept flapping them with all my might, but my feet wouldn’t leave the ground. I was about to give up when I noticed the vine wrapped around my ankle.” Penny acknowledges in Gina Homes’ Christian novel, "Wings of Glass."
With three hundred and seventy-one pages, this paperback book has no profanity or questionable sex scenes but the subject matter of spousal abuse and alcoholism may not be suitable for immature teenagers or younger.
Bestselling author Holmes writes in first person of Penny, a very young, sheltered and somewhat naïve married woman who finds out she is pregnant after years of trying. However, there is one major obstacle in her life: the husband she loves and adores yet fears and is afraid of is not only an alcoholic but repeatedly physically and emotionally abuses her. After each tragic episode, she forgives, ignores and denies the abuse, enabling the sad situation further.
When her husband becomes temporarily blind from a work-related job, Penny is forced to take a job cleaning houses, where she meets two extraordinary women with heart-breaking backgrounds of their own to share. With both women being Christians and their love deepens for Penny, the young girl is at a cross-road deciding if she should Biblically leave her husband. When given a winged angel statue, Penny tries to correlate her own life behind the artwork’s symbolism.
Yet after her spouse comes home drunk again and there is a murder of a woman he worked with, Penny is forced to choose between her fear-based silence and escaping, taking her newborn son to safety. As she writes letters to her son, one sees the angst, anger, and frustration of not only the physical abuse but the emotional and spiritual turmoil.
The book states in the beginning from Ecclesiastes 4:12, “A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken.” NLT. Holmes does an excellent job weaving the strong cord of friendship that helps the heroine turn to God and decide what to do next.

Happily ever after.....maybe not  Jul 20, 2013
Swept off her feet by Trent who she thinks is her Knight in Shining Armour, Penny marries to escape a strict father and the farm life. Little does she know that she has escaped the frying pan only to jump directly into the fire.

Although this is a classic tale of an abused wife, Wings of Glass by Gina Holmes is told from the prospective of a mother telling her child the story of his mother and father. It is an unusual way to write a story, but Gina has masterfully used it in telling Penny's story.

Gina takes you on a journey into the mind of the abused (Penny) and the workings of the abuser (Trent). You learn how Trent uses isolation, verbal and physical abuse to keep Penny under his thumb. This leaves Penny with poor self esteem, has her rationalizing Trent's actions and forever trying to fix the wrong she has done.

Salvation for Penny comes by way of a welding accident her husband has which allows her to get a job to pay the bills and 2 new found friends that show her how to live life again.

Two thumbs up Gina for such an eye opening story.

For those that want to dig deeper into the book, there are several pages of thought provoking discussion questions at the end of the book.

I did receive a copy of this book from The Book Club Network in exchange for my honest review.
