Item description for Slightly Bad Girls of the Bible: Flawed Women Loved by a Flawless God by Liz Curtis Higgs...

Overview
Offers meaningful lessons for women who wonder if God loves them even if they have flaws, combining contemporary fiction and verse-by-verse commentary on the ancient stories of Sarah, Hagar, Rebekah, Leah, and Rachel.

Publishers Description
Good Women Behaving Badly
A spiteful boss, a defiant employee, a manipulative mother, a desperate housewife, an envious sister...honey, we "know "these women. We've lived with them, worked with them, or caught a glimpse of them in our mirrors.
Now let's take a look at their ancient counterparts in Scripture: Sarah mistreated her maidservant, Hagar despised her mistress, Rebekah manipulated her son, Leah claimed her sister's husband, and Rachel envied her fertile sister.
They were far from evil, but hardly perfect. Mostly good, yet slightly bad. In other words, these matriarchal mamas look a lot like us.
""A Slightly Bad Girl is simply this: a woman unwilling to fully submit to God. We love him, serve him, and worship him, yet we find it difficult to trust him completely, to accept his plan for our lives, to rest in his sovereignty."" --from "Slightly Bad Girls of the Bible"

From Publishers Weekly
Higgs revisits the well of biblical women for this continuation of her hugely successful Bad Girls of the Bible series. Whereas Bad Girls of the Bible and Really Bad Girls of the Bible tackled the Jezebels and Salomes, often demonstrating that these women were not as nefarious as later traditions would suggest, this one takes a different tack, looking at five good girls of the Bible and finding them seriously flawed. Focusing on Genesis, Higgs looks at Sarah (a control freak), Hagar (who was filled with bitterness), Rebekah (a conniving schemer who played favorites with her sons), Leah (another schemer) and Rachel (who was consumed by jealousy). One theme that emerges clearly is how fertility, or the lack of it, dominated these womens lives in a patriarchal culture. As always, Higgss tone is chatty and girlfriendish, addressing the reader in the second person as she emphasizes the lessonand the humorin each womans tale. And as always, this one capably blends fictional vignettes of contemporary bad girls with in-depth exegesis of their biblical counterparts stories. Higgs also reveals her own foibles as she weaves personal anecdotes into each chapter, underscoring the books overall theme: even faithful women can sometimes be hurtful and selfish. Reviews - What do customers think about Slightly Bad Girls of the Bible: Flawed Women Loved by a Flawless God?

Really great work but not author's best!  May 2, 2010
The book was good but for me it has been slower and less captivating than "Bad Girls Of The Bible" or "Really Bad Girls Of The Bible"
Liz still has shown her wisdom in her writing, but I held a bit different opinions about how to interpret the verses and not always agreed with Liz 100%. But it would be really hard to have two people who would think alike:) But many translations did hit the mark of how I would interpret the verses. Her knowledge and researched subjects shows in the book. Her language flows, but was not as much mesmorizing as her other two books. But I would recommend this book to everybody. It is enriching and makes you take a look closer at yourself. It makes you feel as a better person and encourages you to do good in not too preachy way.

Such a joy to be entertained while being taught THE WORD at the same time  Jan 21, 2010
I must agree with another review. The book was very entertaining. This book is great for bible study. I love the way the stories are presented in modern day and is followed by scriptures. I also like the way she quotes the scriptures from different bibles.(KJV, NIV, Message).

What an entertaing book...  Feb 20, 2009
I listened to the audio version of this book and I love the deliberate and entertaining reflections on these woman of the bible...I was a little turned off by what I thought was a pretentious title/series, but it has helped reinforce my bible studies and has offered me some new ways to think about these women. Although not comprehensive it offers a unique approach to classic bible stories. I just wish she would come out with audio on all her books.

Slightly Bad very good  Jan 19, 2009
A delightful read... I wish it had covered more than five characters, but the presentation was well organized. I used it as a reference for a group Bible study, and it provided me with fresh new insights on Sara and Hagar.

Slightly Bad Girls of the Bible  Jan 12, 2009
Great Bible study, I lead it with a women's group in Texas last year and am doing it in Florida this year. One of our ladies is going to use it a a retreat for her women's jail ministry . Great study. SO is Really bad Girls and Bad Girls of the Bible
