Reviews - What do customers think about Traces Of Guilt (An Evie Blackwell Cold Case Book?

a must read  Oct 23, 2016
A new Dee Henderson novel? Of course I want it. It does not matter what genre she is writing in, I know it will be fabulous and a definite keeper on my shelf. After she switched genres, from Suspense to Romantic Suspense, her novels reflected the change. No longer are they the suspense of her O’Malley series where her stories invaded your nights, but they are just as compelling, as riveting and enticing, only they lean more to the romance than suspense. Slip into her newest novel and disappear into a different world, a world of crime with Evie and the Thane family as they strive to unearth and bring to conclusion another cold case. And i do enter her stories with full expectation that truth and justice will prevail, and my life will be richer for having been a part of her world for as long as it takes to read it! Her novel are to be savored and digested, a regular feast for the senses.
Thank you to Ellen of Ellen Graf-Martin through her Nuts about Books program, and BethanyHouse, division of Baker Publishing Group for the opportunity to read this novel. I was given a free book .The opinions are my own.

Another attention grabber from Dee Henderson  Aug 15, 2016
Evie Blackwell is dedicated to her job and is embarking on new chapter in her career as a detective. She's testing the waters in a new task force that Ann Falcon is overseeing - one that is focused on unsolved missing-person cases across the state of Illinois. At Ann's direction Evie targeted Carin County as her beta site.

Carin County seems that your typical rural area, but it is also the site of several cold cases. And what Evie discovers could have lasting repercussions on Carin and on the Thane family.

Gabriel Thane is Carin County's sheriff, a job he loves just as his father did. But Carin has been keeping secrets for many years as to the whereabouts of several missing people. With a knack for looking at the facts from a different angle Gabriel is hoping Evie can find that one elusive clue that will unlock the truth giving both the families and Carin the resolution they all long for.

Fans of Dee Henderson will not be disappointed - though this appears to be the first book in a new series some of Dee's other characters from previous stories make an appearance (or get a mention). Ann of course, along with her husband Paul are the most featured after Evie, Gabriel, and the Thane clan. One can easily see who both Evie and Gabriel could be friends with Ann.

Those who read Sins of the Past with Dee Henderson's Missing will have an idea of what this new task force will be like. If not you can enjoy this Romantic Suspense collection at a later date.

Suspense, tragedy, romance this book offers all of this and more. This is the perfect book for any long week-ends that may be coming up. And I just have to say the cover is perfect for this book.

I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher in exchange for my honest review.

Review from Rambles of a SAHM  Jun 10, 2016
Dee Henderson has provided us with some pretty amazing characters over the years but I think I've found a new one that I adore. Let me introduce you to her. Her name is Evie Blackwell and she works as an Illinois State Police detective. That's interesting enough, but what she is doing in her spare time is fascinating.

Evie has been invited to join a team to reopen and perhaps solve many of the cold cases across the state. Before the task force gets started Evie decides to take some vacation time and look into a couple of cases in the sleepy little town of Carin, Illinois.

Carin has two particular cold cases that have bothered the local sheriff, Gabriel Thane, for years. One hits very close to home because it involves a fellow officer. The other case seems to be farther removed with the crime happening locally but unrelated to the community.

As with all of Dee's novels the main story line is only the beginning. She has once again filled this novel with supporting characters that leave me wanting more of them. I enjoyed watching seemingly unrelated events become intertwined with others. That in fact is the essence of small town life. In such a small community eventually everyone interacts with everyone else.

The themes that are included in this work are gut wrenching. The types of things that you pray never touch your family. Unfortunately in a fallen world bad things happen. While the circumstances are horrific, this story will leave you uplifted as you watch the compassion of the Thane family encompass those that are grieving.

I look forward to many more Evie Blackwell cold cases. It is a romantic suspense novel so not everything is tragic. There are several couples that allow you to look away from the tragedy for the moment and focus in on loving relationships. If you enjoy a fast-paced story full of intrigue and compassion then I think that you will enjoy this one.

I received a copy of this book to facilitate my review.

A Page Turner!  Jun 8, 2016
Two cold cases. Two weeks. Detective Evie Blackwell has a lot of ground to cover in Carin, Illinois during her "working vacation", having a head-on collision with local wild life was not the way she intended to begin.

Sheriff Gabriel Thane is dully impressed with Evie Blackwell, even in her post-accident dazed condition. Her reputation has been vetted by one of the best, Ann Falcon, and Gabriel feels positive that Evie can re-open the archived records surrounding two unsolved missing persons cases and proceed with confidence. He is aware that the success of these weeks in Carin will be crucial in launching a state wide task force centering on cold case crimes, so enjoying a natural camaraderie with Evie is a welcome relief as they anticipate the long days and intense hours that lie ahead of them. Nothing could prepare either of them for what they will find.

"Traces of Guilt" is a thoughtful, intense and impressive glimpse of life behind the scenes of good investigative work and lays the groundwork for this series to continue on, as a page turner.

Traces of Guilt  May 24, 2016
Traces of Guilt is a well-crafted procedural! Dee Henderson populates this complex story with an extensive cast of characters and a myriad of details and descriptions. As multiple story lines converged, I puzzled through the cold case investigations alongside the characters and was surprised by several twists and turns. While Evie Blackwell’s crime-solving prowess is an integral part of the narrative, the Thane family was, for me, the heart of the story. I really enjoyed Traces of Guilt and am eager to read more Cold Case novels!

I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an unbiased review. All thoughts expressed are my own.

This is an intricately woven mystery.  May 5, 2016
The character development couldn’t be better in my mind. I am always amazed at how many characters there are in Dee Henderson’s books. I really like seeing how many characters from previous novels make brief appearances in each new book. She truly seems to have “a small world” scenario going on even crossing over from series to series. Along with that she has a marvelous talent for revealing personal information in a subtle way so that it feels like it comes out of a clear blue sky.

The cases that are being reexamined in this book are quickly summarized as each one is initially discussed. Over the course of time they are slowly picked apart and looked at from every possible angle.

One of the aspects of the search that is covered is the search for cadavers using specially trained dogs. The way that a handler works with a pair of dogs was described in great detail. I was fascinated by the information given.

I do want to warn that this is a very heavy book to read emotionally. The subject matter of two of the cases made it a difficult read. On top of that there is a great deal of focus placed on one of the family members who is looking for closure, and the emotions that she has been dealing with for years. I found myself having to take breaks from my reading just to work through the feelings that were stirred up in me for what the characters were dealing with. To me though that is just proof of how good the writing is.

I received a free eBook copy of this novel through NetGalley in exchange for my honest opinion.

Another fantastic book, as always!   Apr 26, 2016
This review might have a slight bias to it, because I’ve read all of Ms. Henderson’s books, and have loved every one of them! This one is definitely no exception, though I fear I may be running out of new things to say about her books. How do you find new words to describe outstanding writing that carries over from book to book? I can honestly say that Dee’s books have never disappointed me, even when the story didn’t exactly go the way I’d hoped or expected. I can never pick a favorite of her books, beyond whichever I’m currently reading. So at the moment, this one is my favorite, and I’m certain I’ll be reading it over again sometime soon.
There is something I find so incredibly captivating about this author’s writing, though I have never been able to pin it down to a single sentence or a specific something. Maybe it’s in the way that she draws me immediately into the story, or maybe how her characters become dear friends that I cheer for and mourn with, or how she weaves the mystery to keep me guessing, or how the book may have 400+ pages, but I breeze through it, then maybe tear up a smidge when I turn the final page. It’s there among the careful details and descriptions that bring every page and scene to life. It’s in the little extras that make her characters burst to brilliant life. It’s in the pieces that she so carefully fits into their places to make the story complete. It’s something that I can’t quite explain, but that I love just the same.
The first two words that come to mind when I think to describe Traces of Guilt to someone are “thoughtful” and “complex.” There are several story threads in play all at once, with differing view points and quite a few new characters. It took me a few chapters to get everyone straight and keep them that way, but I loved the layers of the story that were slowly revealed. I also really enjoyed how many of the characters got a voice here and there and that they were clearly defined so I wasn’t left trying to figure out who’s head I was in at any given moment. The thoughtful part comes from the difficult topics that are part of the main focus of the story. Dee is one of the few authors I’ve read that can take such hard things and handle them with the finesse shown in this book. The emotions behind this story are so vivid, that I often felt them along with the characters.
Evie Blackwell is one of the main characters and I loved her! This book appears to the first in a series that focuses around her, which I’m super excited for. Evie is a delightful character, funny, but also intensely focused and determined. I enjoyed following her as she attempted to think outside of the box and trace all of the possibilities to solve the cases put before her. That may have actually been one of my favorite things in this book - the mystery and all of the ways the story could go. She kept me guessing and thinking, trying to figure out what had happened, right along with Evie. We also meet several new characters, that I’m hoping with be returning in the books that follow. I’d love to find out what happens with Will and Karen, and Josh and Grace, as well as finding out whether Evie and Gabe ever move beyond good friends.
If you’re looking for a quick, light read, I’m not sure I would recommend this book. It carries a weight beyond that and delves into several hard topics and emotions. I found myself laying it aside more than once to simply think and take a breath before being hit with another question to be answered. And I actually loved that about it. I love books that cause me to stop and think, to wonder and chase the question of “what if?” I did really appreciate that though this book is marked to be the first in a series, there aren’t many questions left unanswered, so it can stand alone fabulously. There is a lead-in into the next book, but not a major cliff hanger or something to make me want to yell, “no!” when the final page was turned. Dee did an excellent job of leaving a few questions undone, but also answering the most important ones. I can’t wait to see what the next book holds for Evie, and all of the other dear characters I’ve come to love!

I received an advanced copy of this book through NetGalley for my honest review, which I have given. I was not required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are my own.
