Holman Bible Ultrathin Large Print Reference: Holman Christian Standard Bible, Ultrathin Reference, Black, Genuine Leather
I've had this Bible for a few weeks now in order to give it a better review. The Holman Christian Standard Bible is a brand new translation. It is not a revision of another older translation like the NASB is a revision of the ASV, and the ESV is a revision of the RSV.
The HCSB is an excellent translation for which the translators use what they call an 'optimal equivalence' translation method. When a literal translation meets the criteria of readability, it is used. When clarity and readability demand an idiomatic expression, that method of translation is used. However, the reader can still access the form of the original text by means of a footnote with the abbreviation "Lit."
The HCSB's readability is that between the New American Standard Bible, which is considered the most accurate word-for-word translation, and the New International Version, which is perhaps one of the best meaning-for-meaning translations. And in my comparative analysis of these two versions, I've found the HCSB much more literal than the NIV. But in a lot ways, the HCSB is more readable and understandable, though more accurate.
A big plus for the HCSB is that the translators faithfully translated the text from the original Greek and Hebrew and avoided the gender inclusiveness ideology that's created issues for the more modern versions such as the TNIV. For example, the translators have not changed "him" to "you" or to "them," neither have they avoided other masculine words such as "father" or "son" by translating them in generic terms such as "parent" or "child."
This Bible itself is of top quality! The binding is Smyth-sewn and is excellent in that you can literally lay this Bible on a desk at any page and it will lay flat without the pages flipping back. The paper quality is very good and I find that I can write notes without any bleed-through whatsoever (I used a .5m lead pencil to make notes, and highlight verses using colored Crayola pencils). It's great to carry around with you anywhere as it's not too heavy or bulky like a lot of study bibles.
My only qualms with this Bible are: 1) that the publishers promote this particular Bible as large print . . . it is not! At best, it's a 9.5 font and the footnotes and references are so small that I have to use a magnifier glass at times. But then I'm over sixty and wear bifocals. 2) The cover, though genuine leather (I got the black), is shiny and has a rough texture. Course, that's just a minor personal peeve and have learned to accept it just fine.

| Excellent. Purchased both books as gifts and the recipients were very pleased. | | | | HCSB Leather Bible May 6, 2007 |
Incredible value - excellent print and layout with centre references. I just didn't realise it had thumb indexing - a feature that I cannot stand. So I gave it away! A fabulous version - so I just bought it again without the thumb indexing | | | | It could be better Jan 11, 2007 |
Being a Southern Baptist, I've tried real hard to love the new HCSB. The problem is that I can't. I like this new version but don't know if I will continue using it. I really think that the HCSB in trying to find ways to distinguish themselves from other versions blew it in some cases.
For instance, they are proud that they are the only ones to translate "doulos" as slave. The problem is that it is difficult to always read "slave" when "servant" conveys almost the same meaning. There will be a whole segment of people in the USA that will not be able to tolerate the HCSB. There are also countless times when you refer to the footnote and it gives the literal meaning and the literal meaning is better than the translation they gave.
To give another example, they translated this famous verse this way,"I will make you fish for people!". The problem is that they made a noun (fishermen) into a verb (to fish) and came up with a silly translation. A more literal and better translation would have been, "I will make you fishermen for people".
In the sermon on the mount Jesus is quoted as saying, "if you call your brother moron..." Do I need to say more? I could go on and on but I'll spare you.
I really hope that they make a revision and better their translation or it will slip into obscurity and the ESV will conquer it. | | | | George's Review Aug 10, 2006 |
| I found the binding of good quality. The print is easy to read, pages durable and easy to turn. The bold face letters identfying scriptural quotes is a very nice touch. I am happy to own this translation of the Bible. This translation is easy to read and really makes passages from the KJV (which seemed obscure) come alive in the CSB. | | | Write your own review about HCSB UltraThin Referen Large Prt-Brg Bond
