| Loved it! Hugh & Matt are a real inspiration & hopefully this will stop some of the preference wars in the body of Christ & the we can start working together instead of against one another. Well worth the read simply based on the fact that this is not a book that offers a formula to simply grow a church. This also not a book bashing the traditional church or undermining the work of the attractional or organic churches. I found Hugh Halter and Matt Smay's "The Tangible Kingdom" extremely inspiring and practical and it finally gave me the courage to move ahead with this idea of missional community. So I was excited to see this new offering.
The book aims to bridge the gap between `attractional' forms of church (they seem to be thinking about mega-churches in particular) and `incarnational/organic/simple' church structures. Rather than it being an either/or choice, the authors argue that both aspects of gathered church and scattered church are essential to our mission and mandate.
There is great stuff in here on steps into mission, avoiding consumer-church, creating spiritual formation processes, balancing the 'modalic' with the 'sodalic' and structuring gatherings to support scattered mission. Throughout the book, the one clear clarion call is simple and profound. Mission means dying to ourselves and giving ourselves away so that others can find Jesus. It means giving up our time, comforts, money, energy. Opening up our homes when we would rather just crash out. Making time for others when we're rushed off our feet. That call to denying ourselves is deeply Christian and awesomely challenging, and is perhaps the biggest driver to prayer and legacy that this reading this book leaves.

After reading The Tangible Kingdom by Hugh Halter and Matt Smay and meeting Hugh in Harrisburg PA, this spring, I was anxious to get my hands on their new book AND. It came on Tuesday and by Thursday I have read it cover to cover. Had a hard time putting it down. Had lots of other things that were pressing, but this book was engaging me at a level I've been yearning for!
Especially helpful are the two chapters on The Consumerless Church and The Big AND: Gathered and Scattered in Perfect Harmony. The latter explores in great detail the sodalic and modalic arms of the church and the necessary importance of having BOTH!
Also very helpful are the diagrams and the down to earth, real-life stories.
