Overview
Filled with grief, Jules Bellano rarely leaves the house since her husband's death while on duty as a police officer. Other than the reviews Jules writes on her blog, she has little contact with the outside world. One day when she ventures out to the local grocery store, Jules is bumped into by a fellow customer who apologizes profusely. She recognizes him as her favorite author, Patrick Reagan. Jules gushes and thoroughly embarrasses herself before Regan graciously talks with her. And that's the last thing she remembers-until she wakes up in a strange room with a splitting headache. She's been kidnapped. And what she discovers will change everything she believed about her husband's death . . . her career . . . and her faith.

Great mystery with amazing characters  Nov 27, 2015
This is a great mystery/suspense! I’ve had it in my TBR pile for months now, and once I started reading it, I finished it in one setting. I loved the characters, including Jules’s deceased husband, Jason, a police officer killed in the line of duty. Though he is never alive in the story, Gutteridge does an ample job at developing his character through the memories and recollections of others.

This story is set in a small coastal town in Maine. It is a contemporary mystery/suspense novel, which is not my favorite genre, yet this is one of my favorite reads this year. I read over a hundred books per year, so counting it as a favorite is not something done lightly. I truly enjoyed the story and am fast becoming a Rene Gutteridge fan.

Kidnapping, Trauma and The Fight For Survival  Aug 28, 2014
If someone were to kick you exceptionally hard in your shin then you might have a bone bruise. The bone doesn’t break or fracture but it does bruise. Now here is the interesting part, the outside skin will heal within two weeks, bone bruises take much much longer. My point is that the outside is healed but not the inside. That is the way with trauma. After a while we heal visually to others but on the inside we are walking wounded. That’s the way it is with both Jules and Patrick. Jules suffered trauma from the death of her husband and Patrick has his own traumas. Jules shrinks from the outside world while Patrick resorts to kidnapping. Jules really didn’t care much about life after the death of her husband but when her own life is at stake then she pushes aside her pain and feels the need to survive and live. “Misery Loves Company” is how you define exciting! “Misery Loves Company” is a thriller with all kinds of excitement and danger. Rene Gutteridge knows how to weave a captivating story with wonderful characters that breathe. I enjoyed reading this book.

Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from Tyndale House Publishers. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

MUST READ for Everyone Especially if you are a Blogger  Nov 23, 2013
I was thrilled to receive a review copy of a Rene Gutteridge book that blew me away! OhMyGosh! This story is well crafter, multilayered and fascinating!

This novel gives readers a peek into a writer’s world. It’s a glimpse into how some writers do their musing. This is done thru a famous author named Patrick Reagan. I loved Rene’s wit, her rich plot and characters I instantly cared for!

In order to cope with the death of her Police Officer husband, Jules Belleno turns to blogging. She writes her feelings and thoughts down daily. She also gives her weekly views on books! All this is strategically intermingled in a serious police drama as they try to solve a murder mystery. This author had me at the edge of my seat as I quickly flipped and read the pages to find out who did it.

Jules’s father is retired Lt. Colonel who reads his daughters blog and reviews. It’s the only way he can connect with her and get an insight into why she does the things she does. He sees she’s talented and pushes her to get paid for the work she does blogging. Jules blows it off. That’s not why she writes! Will her father ever get her?

Jules’s car is in the garage. Lt. Colonel knocks on the door no one answers! That’s odd she’s always home. Jules father visits her the same day and time every week. He calls a police friend to come over and check the place out. Lt. Colonel’s gut was telling him something wasn’t right - his daughter was missing.

Chris Downey stops by and checks out Jules blog, her computer. Jules’s father had warned her about writing personal things on social media sites. But it was her passion to write. Lt. said, “Sometimes I don’t know my daughter unless I read all that blog junk. I try, but there’s always this wall between us…I think all this technology is ruining everything about our society. But don’t get me started.”

Chris replies, “I was able to get on her facebook page and her blog. If someone was following her posts, they could pretty easily figure out the pattern. And she is definitely a pattern girl.”

I loved when Jules, who is a book person, says, “While we’re reading words, they’re making magic happen and that magic lands right in your heart, were it’s there forever.” I’ve felt that way about many of Rene’s books. I whole heartedly agree with Rene when her character said this about books and it’s also one of the reasons I read Christian Fiction.

This author brings up very serious concerns about blogging, social media and writing reviews that got my attention. Rene takes readers on a surprising journey with much to think about along the way. Loved it!

Jules says to someone she met, “You read my blog?”

Stranger says, “Isn’t that the point? That people read it? Don’t you hope they get to know you?...If you’d known I’d been reading it, would you have perhaps chosen your words more carefully?” This will make you think about your next blog post!

These characters and the message of this novel “magic landed” in my heart, mind and soul. This novel is an important read for those who blog, write reviews and use social media. I highly recommend this as a great summer read and a book club pick. There is so much to talk about. It’s a must read! Just saying!

Misery Loves Company   Sep 26, 2013
Authors don't kidnap fans because of bad reviews . . . or do they?

If you liked Stephen King's Misery that was made into a movie starring James Caan and Kathy Bates, you are going to love Misery Loves Company. The story isn't the same but it provokes the same feelings of terror and apprehension.

Throughout the entire book I kept vacillating between thinking Patrick Reagan was truly crazy to having feelings of empathy for him. He is portrayed as having a brilliant mind but as soon as you start thinking he is out to help Jules he does something that makes you think he really has gone mad.

The heart pumping pace of the story made it a very fast read. It is one of those books that you wind up speaking out loud to the characters, giving them warnings, telling them to be careful, etc. I refuse to give away the ending, but I will say that it will leave you pondering different scenarios for days.

This is a fabulous read that I recommend to anyone that loves a good spine tingling thrill ride.

I received a copy of this book to facilitate my review.

Tight, Tense Page Turner  Aug 16, 2013
Rene Gutteridge's tale of a blogger finding herself in a twisted nightmare had me turning pages at warp speed and holding my breath wondering what was coming next.

Intense, fascinating and full of twists, this novel is definitely a recent favorite. The ending left me wanting more and cheering on characters.

Gutteridge is a talented writer and handles all aspects of storytelling well.

A satisfying and tense read.

God works all things for good  Aug 12, 2013
Like Jules, the heroine of the story, I was totally bewildered by what was happening to her and why. Like she wrote in her blog, she wasn’t being told to be terrified, she was terrified. I wondered whether this would end up as some sort of G-rated version of MISERY.

The interplay between author and fan was interesting to see develop, and Chris was a great hero figure. The novel is packed with suspense, intrigue and a look at how our motivations and hang-ups can create their own misery for us. As dangerous secrets are revealed, the pace of the novel rushes to a satisfying end. The need for God’s mercy and peace is clearly presented. I recommend it for mystery fans who want a good story.

Misery Loves Company is page turning suspense  Jul 22, 2013
Misery Loves Company
By Rene Gutteridge

Let this book be a warning for all blogging book reviewers - the author may be following you!

When Juliet "Jules" Belleno reviews her favorite author's latest book she gives it a less than glowing review. She tells the author she wants him to terrify her with his writing and not tell her it is a terrifying situation.

All too soon Patrick Reagan is terrifying Jules and not through his writing. For some reason he has kidnapped her and taken her away to his remote mountain cabin. But will anyone even notice that she is missing? In the two years since her husband's death Jules for the most part withdrew from the world. Living in the safety of her home and the life she created for herself through her blog and Facebook, only her father might know that she was missing.

Patrick insists that there is something that Jules needs to know, but only when she is ready. But when will Jules be ready to learn what this obviously disturbed man wants her to know?

When Jules's father reports her missing the Wissberry police force can't take action because she hasn't been gone long enough. But Sergeant Chris Downey takes the report seriously after all he promised his former partner that he'd take care of his wife if anything ever happened. But when Chris's unofficial investigation turns up more than he ever expected he all too soon realizes that more than Jules's life is at stake.

Misery Loves Company is an exciting page turner that will do just what Jules Belleno wanted - you will be terrified. This is a story of growth both on a personal level and a spiritual level as several of the main characters come to realize their need for God.

Tyndale House Publishers has provided me with a complimentary copy of this book through their blogger network in exchange for my honest review of it.

Blogger Caught Up in Writer  Jul 20, 2013
“I need You to help me like You always helped Jason. I need hope that I’m going to get out of this. I can’t do it by myself. I think he’s going to harm me or keep me here for …” Jules cries in Rene Gutteridge’s book, "Misery Loves Company."
This three hundred and forty-nine page paperback tome is the author’s nineteenth novel. With no profanity but topics of kidnapping, murder, corruption and alcoholism, this Christian-based story would be targeted toward mature teenagers and adults who enjoy suspenseful, engaging fiction surrounding the realm of authors, writers and readers.
Widowed Jules Belleno has shut out the world for the past two years after her policeman husband was shot down in the line of duty. As her Marine father drinks himself daily into a stupor, she feels more alone, despondent and restless. Insecure as a writer, her only outlet is blogging about book reviews and putting posts on Facebook about her mundane, unfulfilled, hopeless life. Her last blog posted is about her all-time favorite author, Patrick Reagan, and his recent book that brings her only disappointment.
On the day of her wedding anniversary, she goes to the local grocery store to get ingredients to ritually make the favored special meal, planned to be consumed alone. When she haphazardly runs into the famed older writer who religiously holes up for the winter to write, they strike up a conversation as they exit the store. Yet she does not return home.
Between drinking binges, Jules’s worried father asks Chris, his son-in-law’s past police partner, to look for his missing daughter as they both know something is amiss. The only link they find is that Jules and Patrick were at the store at the same time before she suddenly disappeared.
Meanwhile, Jules awakes confused, alone and scared in an unfamiliar, cold and gloomy bedroom, forced to make decisions that will change her thinking of the past regarding Jason, her opinion of writing and her beliefs in God and those around her. As she battles despair, her confidence is challenged trying to quickly understand why her captor has become unpredictable.
In this fast, heart-pounding literary narrative, one not only sees how giving out too much information online or in print can alter and change viewpoints and opinions of others, it can lead to terrifying circumstances that unveil truths which require a dependence on a Superior Being.
