Item description for Rees Howells Intercessor by Norman Grubb... Rees Howells was a man peculiarly taught of God: one who learned the Bible as the Spirit made him live it. Every chapter of this biography is full of drama and light, showing how he faced the implications of an entire surrender, learned to love the unlovely, found the key to prevailing prayer, became the channel of a mighty revival in Africa, was taught the principles of divine healing and progressed ever further in faith until world events were affected by his prayers.
Here are rich truths of the Spirit for all the Church of Christ today, inherent in a story told with simplicity, humanity, and humor enough to captivate any reader.

 | Rees Howells: Intercessor Feb 18, 2007 |
This book is a classic and a must have for any library collection. The incredible prayer work that was done by Howells and his intercessory prayer group is nothing but miraculous. He is one of the spiritual giants of the 20th century, an unsung hero of the faith.
I would highly recommend this book for pastors, youth pastors, and other Christian leaders. It well should be considered required reading as basic and classic as Pilgrim's progress. | | | | rees howells: intercessor Nov 10, 2006 |
| A great book for the person serious about living a life committed to the eternal rather than the temporal. Many will read this book, I'd believe, and think "That was great then, but today is a different world!" However, the Word says God is the same, yesterday, today, and forever, so the truly seeking heart will be encouraged and strengthened from reading this book. We bought six, have given them away, and will be buying more. | | | | Reese Howells Interssesor Aug 21, 2006 |
| Life changing book, Unbelievable yet true, each chapter is better than the last.... | | | | Good mixed with bad Jul 7, 2006 |
I agree with the reviewer who said the book had a lot of good, but that there was theological error thrown in as well.
I was impressed with Rees Howell's devotion to the Lord and the personal sacrifices he endured in that devotion and in doing to what He thought was the will of God.
I found error (years after I had believed the doctrines in the book to be true, and then found my own life had veered off into more and more error) in several issues.
It seems that Howells believed and taught his group of intercessors that God had to be lifted into sovereign position by Spirit-led intercession, particularly in the World War II intercessions descriptions.
God IS sovereign. He does not need to be lifted to sovereignty. The Bible is clear in many Scriptures that the Lord reigns. Period.
Also, I agree with the objection the other reviewer made about Howell's beliefs and practices on intercession. They were extreme and went beyond what the Scriptues say.
It seemed that Howell's taught his students that their intercession work and fruit was somehow in addition to the work of Christ on the cross.
When Jesus said, "It is finished," nothing else can be added on top of that. It means "It is finished."
Am I saying we don't need to pray and intercede for others, and that we don't need to do the work God gives us to do? NO! BUT, whatever we do needs to rest on, to depend on, the finished and complete salvation of God, bought for us on the cross.
Intercession, as with everything else, is founded on the complete -- absolutely complete -- work of Christ on the cross.
It is all by grace, lest any man should boast.
I still found much good in the book. Rees Howell's zeal, dedication, hard work, and love for God were very inspiring.
The error is serious, however. | | | | Great Book But Not Complete Nov 30, 2005 |
This is not a complete biography of the man.
The early years of his life, his family, his brief visit to the USA, his conversion to Christianity, his ministry in his homeland are described in detail. This is exciting.
He went to America to seek his fortune. He met Christians who explained the gospel to him. He didn't understand it at first. Then he met a travelling preacher who was used by God to break through to him. The author describes Howell's thoughts and ponderances and confusions during this time. The author obviously knew his subject well.
The book describes how Rees Howells pushed and pushed harder to give more of himself to God, to serve God and to trust God. Time after time he was obedient to what he thought God wanted him to do, and time after time it didn't seem like he had the resources (i.e. $) to accomplish it, and time after time he trusted God for it, and time after time God came through.
He wasn't a full-time preacher who drove to Sunday morning worship services in an air conditioned luxury car. The man worked all day in a coal mine and then walked miles to a distant town that needed to hear about the love and redempting power of God. Through his prayers and preachings, he reached many.
Then the details seem to end. The book hurriedly describes the subject's brief stint as a missionary to Africa. This includes some powerful testimony, but more than half a decade is described in only a few brief pages. The book only briefly mentions his children. His later life is described in bits and pieces. It never really seems to take shape or show a purpose; it's merely a description of some events during his later years. If the author had finished the rest of this biography, it would have been a great book.
