Item description for Addiction & Grace by Gerald G. May...
Here is Gerald May's brilliant and now classic exploration of the psychology and physiology of addiction. It offers an inspiring and hope-filled vision for those who desire to explore the mystery of who and what they really are. May examines the "processes of attachment" that lead to addiction and describes the relationship between addiction and spiritual awareness. He also details the various addictions from which we can suffer, not only to substances like alcohol and drugs, but to work, sex, performance, responsibility, and intimacy. Drawing on his experience as a psychiatrist working with the chemically dependent, May emphasizes that addiction represents an attempt to assert complete control over our lives.Addiction and Grace is a compassionate and wise treatment of a topic of major concern in these most addictive of times, one that can provide a critical yet hopeful guide to a place of freedom based on contemplative spirituality.

Reviews - What do customers think about Addiction & Grace?
 | Humble, Factual and Spiritual Mar 8, 2007 |
I am absolutely loving the edition of this book. I have waited over a year for this revised print to become available and I haven't been disappointed in the least!
I have always believed that the first steps toward outward healing begins on the inside, and that we each have an accountability to ourselves and to those around us to live healthly mental and physical lives. Of course I am the first to admit that my victories small and large are totally due to the fact that I chose to reach out in faith for fistfulls of God's grace to make up for my lacking.
Thank you dear author for this very special book.

| A real nuts and bolts book about the true underlying causes of addictions and the spiritual aid available in the grace of a higher power. A tremendous book for anyone who has any form of addiction (we all do) or loves someone who does. | | | | Excellent treatment on addiction with fair understanding of grace Jan 9, 2007 |
I think that May gives a fantastic explanation of addiction and its dynamics. This points the reader clearly to the need for grace to deal with addiction. However, I think May's grasp of grace is limited. Because of his shallow understanding of religions, especially Christianity, he lumps all of them together and defines grace with a vague concept of blessing and help from God.

| I ordered this book for my Graduate level Addictions Counseling class. I really felt that this book was a great resource for anyone that has a desire to help those struggling with addictions. | | | | Inconveniently honest Aug 1, 2006 |
| Additictions & Grace did not spare the truth about addictions, chemical, behavioral and people. However, as always, grace abounds for those caught in the snares of addiction. The Great Hound of Heaven continues His relentless pursuit of those who are lost until they are found. | | | Write your own review about Addiction & Grace
