Overview
A strangely gifted six-year-old boy has the whole world wondering about the source of his powers in this suspenseful novel by the author of "A Ship Possessed" and "Vanished".

Publishers Description
Patients in a hospital ward are instantly healed. A killer tornado is stopped in its tracks. A dying businessman is cured of cancer. Undeniable miracles are following a rusty station wagon on its journey west. But the person behind them is no charismatic religious figure. He s the six-year-old son of a poor single mother and the possessor of a gift he can t explain. To multitudes, however, Toby Matthews is about to become a New Age messiah--and to unscrupulous opportunists, a ticket to undreamed-of wealth. But one person besides his young mother will see Toby for who he really is. Thomas York, a gifted but searching divinity student, finds in Toby a kindred spirit--brilliant, intuitive, hungry for truth. And as an evil beyond their comprehension unfolds, Truth will become their only weapon against a terrifying enemy unseen by all except Toby. A taut supernatural thriller, The Prodigy probes the influence of the invisible realm on the world around us and the indomitable power of the Light that shines in the darkness."

Reviews - What do customers think about Prodigy?

Thrilling and thoughtprovoking  Feb 16, 2011
The Prodigy is, in my opinion, one of Alton Gansky’s finest books. His plot is very solid giving an excellent framework on which to stretch his variety of spiritual tales: A boy with the ability to heal, to sense and to see, a brilliant college student who seeks the miraculous, and those who wish to exploit the boy and his abilities.

Now I said before the plot was solid, and it was..But it also was not unexpected with the characters we had in play. However, besides in some ways being predictable, the entire plot wasn’t that way and as always the characters had surprises up their sleeves. Overall I feel like this book did an amazing job at delving into some deep issues and different situations due to Toby’s unusual gifts. A refreshing plunge into something new. The ending of the book was one of the strangest I’d ever read. I did a double take and read it twice to make sure I had it right. Wonderful way to end it!

A book well worth reading  Oct 9, 2010
[The Prodigy by Alton Gansky]

The Prodigy: Was an amazing book filled with adventure, hurting hearts, and the power of God. The story centers around the lives of three men and a woman. Ms. Mathews is Toby’s mother and a hurting woman. A man who never cared enough to be her husband and gave her a child is a nightmare personified. Only showing up when he has things he wants from her. She’s a scared teen girl in Lincolnsberg North Carolina with a newborn, and no spine to stand up to the father’s bullying and nothing to do that can get her away. Then it gets worse. First, it’s the verbal insults, barbs, vile statements, but then comes the beatings. Mary Mathews endured it all unable to walk away, but the night he hit Toby was the last night they stayed in North Carolina. After saving for six years doing manual labor, and the worst jobs she could find it’s time to go, now she has a reason--her son is in danger. Toby was never a normal child at a few years of age he could read and talk normally. He devoured every book he could find, that alone was enough to make the Blue Mountain folks talk about a demon boy, something born of witchery, but he can see things others can’t……

All the while a genius student studies theology while always looking for “something more”. The miraculous, has he found it in Toby?

A man who is dying of cancer hears of mysterious happenings at a hospital and a boy disarming a robber. He wants to live, and so the hunt begins.

Aaron Pratt teaches Biblical study at a prestigious university, life is going well, he is always on time and he loves his job. Studying the Bible and teaching was his calling. But did he sweep for the lost coin? A conversation with a scholarship appointee has him wondering. “God give me a light to sweep by”.

And a radio talk show host has landed the job of a lifetime touring with a healer and making money hand over foot. But did he turn over more than just an honest job when he became the leader of the New World Jerusalem church?

The Shadow man is appearing everywhere, but only Toby can see him. What is he really, and why…does he want the boy?

The plot was multidimensional and extremely intense. I wouldn’t recommend the book for anyone under 16 unless they read quite a bit of spiritual intense novels. It was amazing, thank you Mr. Gansky.

This is the short version of my review, the long version was too long :(

this book was great. really enjoyed it. I can hardly wait for a sequill to come out. sure hope one is in the making.

Wonderful  May 29, 2006
I REALLY enjoyed Toby's story. Theologically I kept wondering what Gansky would do with this subject, with Toby and THomas. Awesome. It was gripping AND intellectually stimulating. Rock on!

Awesome  Sep 5, 2005
This was one of the most interesting books I've ever read, I had a hard time putting it down. Its a great book for all ages.

I couldn't put it down...  May 4, 2004
Because I hoped it would get better....The story had potential. A little boy and his mother, trying to escape a hard-knock life in Appalachia, set sail for California (cause where else do people escape to?). Along the way they encounter people who Toby seems to know intimate details about. He can see inside them, know their suffering and heal them if the need is there. Toby is discovered by a man who doesn't have his best interests at heart, who then (of course) exploits Toby's gift for fame and profit. And there's a "Shadow Man" thrown in there for a supernatural twist. This is a typical protaganist vs. antagonist story. And of course, the protaganist overcomes. A boring and overdone theme. The writing in this book is painful to read. I can tell the author is trying to be creative and original in his descriptions but comes off painfully cliche and sounding like he's trying too hard. Also, the names of some of the characters are cringe-worthy. A name can define a character. It can sometimes stand alone in revealing the personality of a character. But, when it's obvious, like some of the character names in this book, it induces a groan. In the end, the story is wrapped up all too quickly and tidily. Honestly, I wouldn't waste any time reading this book.

Good Fiction!  Apr 6, 2004
The Prodigy is one of those books that occasionally makes you say outloud "Yeah!". But unfortunately has a few moments where you say, "That's it?" I think Alton Gansky is a great writer, but I think he needs to concentrate on the climax of his novels. He starts off his novels with a punch so strong, sometimes the endings can't live up to the previous writing.

However, all that said, I think The Prodigy is an excellent story. I felt the pain and suffering of Toby's mother through-out this story. Anyone who wants to read a suspense/mystery novel written by a storyteller committed to his craft (not just after a paycheck) should purchase The Prodigy.

I would also highly recommend all of Gansky's other novels. I haven't found a bad one yet.

See ya next time!
