Reviews - What do customers think about Enoch?

Good but not great  Feb 16, 2011
Enoch is a book, once read, you don’t easily get out of your mind. It’s laced with spiritual action and warfare. Spiced with straight faced humor. And bordered by characters that are larger than the pages on which they sit. I found the idea of Enoch arriving again with a message from God to be absolutely fantastic! Mr. Gansky literarily colored in a Biblical character making him both believable and making the reader eager to learn more. And gave me the fun cause to question, “What if he really did come back?”. All that to say, I felt the plot was reasonable, but still not the showcase of the book. Again it was the characters that made the storyline work for me. With lesser characters I’m quite sure I wouldn’t have enjoyed it near as much. Between a pretend psychic who might be more real than she knows, a man from the past named Enoch, and a broken and frustrated man looking for a fresh start; Mr. Gansky has given us an amazing mix between new, old, and redemption.

[Enoch by Alton Gansky]

Enoch: Henick Jaredson finds himself in Texas near a small town called Blink. And that's where he's called by God. An elderly couple nearly runs him over as he walks along the road. After much convincing they get him to ride in the back of their truck, to them, finally he shows some sense! Until---Jaredson decides to stand up, he wanted to see the city's lights sooner. Where is he from? Another place. What's his plans, to follow where God leads. They take him to a diner and order him a large T-bone. Can't have a stranger go hungry. Until they find out, and he founds out, "This is cow flesh?" and also, he's a vegetarian. When the waitress starts getting unwelcome advances from Eddie Feely, a local man who's had a few too many, Henick stands up and says nothing. Unfortionately for him, Eddie isn't in the business of waiting to see what happens and he decides to beat this long haired stranger to a pulp. In the middle of ramming Henick into a wall, something happened, Henick touched him, and Eddie broke down crying. Somehow this man he'd never seen knew what his mother said right before she died. How? And Henick, lived thousands of years ago.

This is just the beginning of a wonderful book, an occult leader's sham ends, her possession, becomes real. And now she needs Henick dead, Eddie is just a casualty. An FBI, FCC, and model like pilot are thrown into the mix as they rush to reach the compound before Mary Martha Celestine can kill the hostages, and like with all Mr. Gansky's writing, the possession is just waiting-and smiling.

Bored!!!  Nov 25, 2009
This was my first experience reading Gansky. After reading some of the reviews from this book and his other books, I decided to buy it and was excited to get started. It was not but a few chapters into the book that I started to become bored with it. I felt the plot was unrealistic and very thin in detail. People are seeing messages in different forms of media, film, newspaper, radio, etc. and all they have on the case is one FBI agent and an FCC investigator???? Maybe I am over analyzing here but it just wasn't credible to me. If this were to occur today, especially post 9/11, I know there would be mass hysteria and a boat load of investigators working on the phenomenon, not just two. I know it was a key portion of the book, but I hated the whole false church and "Mary-Martha" portion of the plot. I just didn't like it and was plain bored to death. Unfortunately, I forced myself to finish the book hoping for some hidden redemption. It never came!

Started off well, but flamed out at the end...  Oct 13, 2009
I thought the concept idea was really interesting. Alton continues to struggle writing believable dialog and nuanced characters, but the story kept me hooked. And it was an enjoyable read. Until the end. The story that had taken 300 pages to tell wrapped up in about 2 with a couple of gun shots. I literally said to myself, "that was it????" A major disappointment for the ending.

OH MY GOD WAS THIS AGOOD BOOK Kathy Elliott Port Charlotte Florida  Jul 7, 2009
Enoch read like butter. I loved it so much. I could not put it down. But I like all of Alton Gansky books

Hard to put down  Jun 11, 2009
This is no casual read. Get ready to squirm in your chair and lock yourself in the bathroom to avoid distractions because you won't want to put it down!

The first of the book takes you to visit various people who are going about their daily lives, but then the "message" they see/hear sends them on a quest to find out what is going on. Sometimes changing scenes like that can be tricky but I never felt lost and it wasn't too hard to keep up.

Henick (Enoch) finds himself in west Texas and has been sent as a messenger from God. He has a message for the whole world, but along the way he is sent to help certain individuals for reasons only he understands (actually, even he doesn't understand all of them). The first guy he helps, Eddie, goes after Henick to find out more about him, but then finds himself in mind-bending situations as he helps Henick along his journey.

Mary-Martha Celestine pastors a mega "church" (if you can call it that) called Church of New Revelation, but the "revelations" are all made up from her corrupt mind. She claims to talk to spirits and soon finds out what a dangerous game she is playing when she hears about this "message" going around.

This book is full of action and suspense. Henick continues to get himself into situations he may not get out of and has the FCC, the FBI, and Mary-Martha's goons trying to find him. It's a matter of who is going to find him first...and what will they do to him when they do! I won't be getting rid of this book and would love to read more from Gansky. Very intriguing!

Enoch shows how God can be working on the bigger picture, but still care about and be very involved in individual lives. It also reminds us that we don't have to know why God wants us to do something, but to trust him and do it anyway.

Enoch disappoints  Apr 13, 2009
Alton Ganskey is my favorite Christian novelist, rising easily to the top of the heap. His shining strengths are present in this novel: great characters, superb description and setting, and a truly fascinating storyline.

What is glaringly missing is a believable plot. This novel does not live up to it endorsements. I kept waiting for the "...rocket on meth..." experience but found it fizzled with a half-hearted thud. The new age guru character boarders on silly. Again, surprising, for Gansky's ability to create characters is one of his fortes.

Because of the author's keen writing ability and skill, the book is still worth a read if you want a pleasant afternoon mulling an interesting idea. If you're looking for riveting, look elsewhere.
