Item description for A December Bride by Denise Hunter & Julie Carr...

Overview
Their first date was spontaneous - neither had a date to a particularly awkward wedding. But what started as a whim has turned into an accidental - and very public - engagement announcement, leaving Layla O'Reilly fit to be tied. Under normal circumstances, Derek Murphy - rich snob and best friend of her cheating ex-boyfriend - would be the last person she'd want to date, much less marry. But the news of their upcoming nuptials has convinced a big client that Layla may be high-society enough to work for his agency - which could put her fledgling home-staging business in the black. Derek Murphy's pronouncement at the wedding seemed crazy to Layla, but he's loved her secretly for years, even when she was dating his best friend. He's sure she'll never forgive him for the way he hurt her back then. But maybe, just maybe, he can convince her. When Layla agrees to keep up their engagement farce until she's landed her client, Derek couldn't be happier. The race is on. For Layla it's the chance to save her career. But for Derek, it's the chance to win her heart. If they can make it to the end of the year, maybe she'll be his December Bride.

Packing a full fledged romance into a few weeks  Apr 30, 2014
Layla didn't want to go to Jack's wedding, but he was marrying her cousin, and the entire family would be there. She had to prove to them that she was over him, not pathetic, heart-broken or vindictive. So when Seth Murphy asked if she needed a ride to the wedding, she accepted his offer. Through a comedy of errors and perhaps just a wee bit of wishful thinking on Seth's part, by the end of the long evening Layla found herself engaged to him. How had that happened?

Seth was only trying to protect Layla from her cousin's barbed tongue and mean spirit. But now that he'd stepped into the breach, he really didn't want to extricate himself.

In the meantime, Layla had dreams of operating a successful staging business, working with real estate companies to prepare their homes to sell. Was it wrong when she noticed that suddenly she received a little more respect for her aspirations once she was supposedly "engaged" to the owner of Murphy's hardware store? Conflicted, she approached Seth with the idea of allowing the misunderstanding to stand awhile longer while she tried to gain the interest of a prominent businessman for a contract to stage his homes. Not only did he agree, Seth even went so far as to allow her to stage his historic house for the annual Christmas Tour of Homes. He didn't really mind, since this would give him an additional three weeks to win her over. He intended to convince her he had serious feelings for her. Could he capture her heart in such a short time?

This is a short novella one can finish in just a few hours. It's perfect reading for that chilly evening, snuggled in a chair with a mug of hot chocolate to keep you warm. Sometimes funny, sometimes reflective, this cozy read makes you believe in the power of persistence and love. And Layla learns a few important lessons about herself along the way. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book.

Included at the end of the book is a sneak peek at chapter one of Layla's brother Beckett's story.

Disclosure of Material Connection: I received a complimentary review copy of this book from NetGalley on behalf of Zondervan Fiction. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

a quick, easy, happy read...   Feb 21, 2014
haven't read very many novellas, and the few that I have read haven't been that great. They always seem to be lacking... whether it be details, a finish/closure or whatever. So, usually I steer clear of novellas, but when I saw this novella was written by Denise Hunter-- I had to check it out! She is a wonderful author and I have read several of her previous works.
A December Bride is a story of hurt, deception, anger, forgiveness and grace. Yeah, that's a lot to cram into one little book, but Denise did it!! The relationship between Layla and Seth is a bit touchy because of their past interactions, but Layla makes it harder because she blames hime for her break-up with her ex. Seth is mostly patient with Layla and wishes for more than a fake wedding. There is a happy ending for all involved. This is the kind of story I call "eye-candy." It's sweet, not too long and there's a happy ending. The thing that makes this stand out even more from other novellas of it's kind is that there are biblical truths woven through out.
If you are looking for a quick, easy, happy read... this is a great place to start!!

Slide onto your bookshelf any time of the year!  Jan 30, 2014
Sharing My Review~
A December Bride draws you into Layla's predicament right from the first page. Layla's friendly date cancels on her at the last moment, and she's determined to find another one, pronto. After all, the wedding she's attending should have been hers, but the groom's marrying her cousin instead. Seth Murphy offers to take her, and while she hasn't forgiven Jack's buddy for his role in their breakup, she's not about to miss the wedding and the chance to show her ex-fiance that she's so over him.

I just love a hero who's loved the heroine for a very long time, but the circumstances kept them apart, and Seth fills the hero role to perfection. He should have asked Layla out first, but Jack beat him to it. Now that Jack's married, this is Seth's chance, but he almost blows it.

Layla set the white votive inside the Mason jar and slid it down the table to Murphy.

He caught the jar and cut a length of twine. "I swear they're going to revoke my man card."

Layla scooped sugar into the next jar and arranged red berries around the votive. "You own a hardware store; I think your manhood is intact."

He scowled. "I'm tying bows on glass knickknacks. Don't you need some wood chopped or something?"

"What I need is thirty of these to line the walkway, so butch up and tie the bow."

Cute, adorable sparring keeps the dialog moving along at a face pace, and A December Bride packs just enough heat to make me reach for the air conditioner switch in the middle of winter. Denise Hunter is now on my must-read list, and A December Bride could slide very easily onto your bookshelf any time of the year!

Disclaimer: Sending a big thank you to Zondervan Fiction and NetGalley for allowing me the privilege of reviewing this book. I received a free copy of A December Bride in exchange for my fair and unbiased review. This opinion is my own, and I received no compensation.

I LOVED IT  Jan 9, 2014
A Year of Weddings is a series of 12 novellas written by numerous well loved authors. The first of these is A December Bride. I love how Denise Hunter took the time to find the best words to bring Layla and Seth to life in such a way that her readers can identify with them. Not only did the characters come alive, the scenes of Christmas vibrated in technicolor! How unique the setting was, and caused this romantic reader to dream. Well written, vivid imagery used, fresh plot everything together made for a fabulous read! Way to go, Denise and Zondervan/Thomas Nelson.

I received this ebook free from Netgalley and Thomas Nelson/Zondervan Fiction for the purpose of review. A positive critique was not required. The opinions are my own.

Great Holiday Romance  Dec 28, 2013
I am so excited about this new series. Each book is written by an amazing author and Denise Hunter kicked it off with this first book, A December Bride.

When I read a novella I don't expect to get pulled too deeply into the story because it's so short, which is why I like novellas. They are a quick read. But my heart was twisting at the tension and romance between Seth and Layla.

This was a wonderful December/Christmas/New Years read. I loved this book.

So many great moments in this book. Denise will keep you guessing how the characters will get out of the mess they are in and when will Layla wake up and see what a totally awesome guy Seth is?

Well, you'll have to grab your own copy to find the answers to these questions. The novella's are all reasonably priced for ebook so don't be shy about getting yourself a copy. The book is also out on audio.

A copy of this book was given to me by the publisher through Netgalley.com in exchange for an honest review.

A Great Romance!  Dec 26, 2013
I loved this story. It is the first novella in the A Year of Weddings series. Each month, a different author is releasing a wedding story. This story was a great way to kick off the weddings! A December Bride is connected with the characters from Denise Hunter’s book, Barefoot Summer. I was able to read this wedding story just fine without having read Barefoot Summer, however, now I plan to go back and read Barefoot Summer as well.

I love reading books by Denise Hunter. She writes great attraction between characters. Layla and Seth find themselves in a pretend engagement. The whole town thinks they are getting married on Christmas Eve. Layla is also working on staging Seth’s house for a Tour of Homes, so they are spending a lot of time together. Will Layla be able to forgive Seth for something that she blames him for in the past? Will Seth be able to convince Layla that he would actually like the engagement to be the real kind instead of a farce?

Even though this is not a full length novel, I felt that the characters were fully developed, their attraction felt very real and the story did not feel rushed at all. A very good story that I am glad I read during December. However, I would recommend this book for romance fans to read at any time of the year.

A December Bride  Dec 24, 2013
One of my favorite things this time of year is Christmas novellas. Zondervan has put together a series of novellas called A Year of Weddings. Each book will have a different author but they all will center around a wedding. I think that will be a nice little treat each month of the year! Forget the jam of the month club, I'll take this thank you!

A December Bride is such a fun start to this series. I found it amusing because I could relate to it on several levels. Who hasn't made a statement out of spite only to be trapped by it? The perfect part about the untruth was that Seth did it to protect Layla. Did he have ulterior motives? You'll have to read the book to find out!

The chemistry between Layla and Seth was delicious, a little spicy and a whole lot sweet. The storyline flows and actually makes you feel like you are reading a full length novel. One of the great things about this series and this novella in particular is that if you enjoyed the story and you are longing for just a bit more, you can have it! For more of the characters and what happened to them before and after A December Bride you can read Denise's full length novel Barefoot Summer.

The only possible drawback to this series is that it comes only in ebook or audiobook. I personally read it on my Kindle and didn't mind it a bit.

I received a copy of this book to facilitate my review.
