Reviews - What do customers think about When Mountains Move?

Book 2 in a Series  Mar 7, 2014
What a wonderful read!!! I can't believe that this book was sitting around waiting to be read when it was such a riveting, thoroughly enjoyable experience!

I received this book, along with the first one, "Into the Free", from the author, through bookfun.org with the request that I would write an honest review. What a pleasure that is for me. I couldn't grade it any higher, but, if there were more stars, I would use them. I didn't think a book could top the New York Times Bestseller that was Book 1, but this one certainly equaled it!

The life that Millicent (Millie) lived, is not one with which I could relate, but this author provided such insight into the details of all that this character went through, that the reader is transported into that time and those events. I would sit down and say that I was only going to read one or two chapters, and, because so many unbelievably traumatic events would occur in each chapter, that I would immediately turn the page to begin the next chapter to see what happens, thus, it would be six or seven chapters before I can pull myself away, and even that was difficult! I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED this series. I was not disappointed this book, even though it was not listed as a NYT Bestseller, as was Book #1. It really held up to the reputation of the first book, and held my interest throughout. I really think that it is especially important in this series to read Book 1 first. In some series, a reader is able to read a series book out of order, but, "Into the Free" offers so much detailed happenings to Millie, that makes When Mountains Move so much more enjoyable.

I would WHOLEHEARTEDLY recommend this book (and I have) to my reading friends and anyone else who will listen (smile).

When Mountains Move by Julie Cantrell

It is the spring of 1943... and Millie's World is about to change forever. Soon after the break of day, Bum will become Millie's Husband. And then, if all goes as planned, they will leave the rain-soaked fields of Mississipi and head for the wilds of the Colorado Rockies. As Millie tries to forget a dark secret, she hasn't yet realized how drastically those past experiences will impact the coming days.

For most of Millie's life , being free felt about as unlikely as the mountains moving. But she's about to discover that sometimes in life, we are given second chances, and that the only thing bigger then her past ...is her future.

Well I have to say that I had my doubts about liking The story and couldn't read it until I read the first book in the series called " Into the Free". But I want to say that I loved the story and that I love the way Julie writes. The way she tells the story is smooth easy reading and I love when you read a story that you can really feel the emotion of the folks in it. This is a wonderful story and I would highly recommend both books to my readers. As I read this book I was thinking of my dear friend Deanna in MS, who always talks about how the yard and fields are wet, clay and not very productive for a grassy yard... but also what a big move she made years back , just like Millie did. Its sweet when books remind you of your dear friends. This book has a bit of suspense, love and down to earth real life happenings.

Julie lives in Mississippi with her family where they operate Valley House Farm. I am supposing that her living there makes it very easy for her to relate real life to her stories and this is a lovely and good thing. I hope you will all read and enjoy her books !

When Mountains Move  Nov 8, 2013
Note: I received a complimentary copy for an honest review of this book from www.bookfun.org
In this sequel to Into the Free, the main character’s story continues filled with so much action, romance and faith. Most of the action/story takes place in Colorado. When Millie is accosted, she keeps the life-changing event a secret, letting her fears determine her path. For months she is helping her husband begin building the ranch they started in Colorado until months later she is told she is pregnant.
Bump, which is Millie’s husband’s nickname, is a veterinarian who loves Millie with all his heart. When he finds out she is pregnant, he is thrilled at first. Then, days later, he is thinking otherwise. When the baby is born healthy, Millie still believes her secret past can be kept from becoming known.
Millie’s character faces many choices as she is growing up, some of which children at the tender age of 16 shouldn’t have to face. When Millie loses both her parents, then other experiences happen, she finds a job as rodeo trick rider. Shortly thereafter, she chooses to marry Bump and start a new life, hoping the past will be left behind in the dust. As Millie learns years later, secrets can hurt more than telling the truth.
Millie’s parentage also causes her to find out who she is and not be defined by society. Though her past is lettered with abuse, abandonment and more, Millie wants more for her child. This forces her to make different choices than what was shown to her growing up. It takes a lot of courage to tell the truth, knowing it will hurt people, but Millie also learns that some people figured out the truth long ago and were waiting for her to be ready to share.
The main theme throughout all the scenarios is that we all have the freedom to choose to forgive or harbor in our hearts unforgiveness. One choice brings freedom, the other bondage. The tale told here is a gripping one with an exciting and touching ending. This is a must read!
My rating is 5 stars!

great book  Nov 6, 2013
When Mountains Move
By: Julie Cantrell

Really liked the book. This the second book after “Into the Free”. What a abusive life Millie had. She gets married to a rodeo vet. Will their relationship make it with the secrets she keeps. When the secret comes out can there be forgiveness? The book has lots to deal with faith, hope and love. I would rate these books as 5 star. Wonder will their be a third one. Great writing Julie.

A book about compassion and forgiveness  Oct 24, 2013
When Mountains Move ~ Julie Cantrell

It was with great anticipation that I began to read this book. I was not disappointed. It is a huge burden that the main character carries with her throughout most of this novel. As she begins her journey with her husband to lands unknown. As they set out, can you just imagine how it excited you were when you fell in love and joined your lives together? Full of dreams and plans. Only She must keep part of herself hidden so as not to tear her new dreams to shreds.
It inspired me to read and watch as she gains strength, wisdom, and courage to face trials and tribulations. It was with a heavy heart I neared the end of the novel, I wanted only the best for this young girl that I saw so much of myself in. The ending made me hold my breath a few times. This novel had her facing many perils that life seems to put in many of our paths. I was happy to see how she dealt with them. I am anticipating the next book by this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't Put This One Down!  Oct 7, 2013
When I requested “When Mountains Move” from the Book Club Network I had no idea that my review calendar would be so congested that I would have a difficult time finding a spot for it. I finally caught up and just finished reading this marvelous book. I am so glad I finally had the chance. In fact, I became so caught up in the story that I had to make myself close the covers at 2:oo a.m. last night in order to get a little sleep before the rest of the household woke this morning.

Although “When Mountains Move” is a sequel to “Into the Free”, it can easily be read on its own. Pertinent facts have been filled in as the story progresses and the reader should have no problems filling in the blanks. The story begins on Bump and Millie’s wedding day – a day in which they will not only become man and wife but will start their new life together by moving from Mississippi to the Colorado mountains to head up a new ranch for Bump’s boss, Mr. Tucker.

At seventeen, Millie has already experienced more than her share of hard times and tragedies and enters her marriage with a major secret from Bump. She intends to share it with him but the proper time never seems to come. While she delays, her secret grows even larger. Millie is not the only one who carries secrets. Their ranch hand Fortner has a mysterious and possibly dangerous past but no one in the area will say much about it and Fortner is not very forthcoming with details. Millie is convinced that her neighbor, a single widow is after Bump and there are a few signs that Bump might return the interest.

“When Mountains Move” is a story about faith, trust, perseverance, and overcoming the past to see your own mountains move. A truly gripping story, it held my attention until the very end. The plot moved steadily from one emotional depth to an emotional climax and back again multiple times. A blend of action, danger, romance, hope, and despair, this book is definitely one of the best I have read this year.

I received a review copy from the author through the Book Club Network.

When Mountains Move by Julie Cantrell  Sep 29, 2013
*When Mountains Move by Julie Cantrell****

When Mountains Move (book 2) is a continuation of book 1 Into the Free and is set in 1943 where Millicent, (Millie) Reynolds and Kenneth (Bump) Anderson marry in Itl Taloa, Mississippi and move to Colorado to start a ranch for their boss, Cauy Tucker. Bump is also planning to start a veterinary practice once the ranch is up and running, hopefully in three years. They arrive and find the ranch not as they had envisioned, it will require lots of hard work and many hours to make the house liveable. In the meantime they pitch their tent and live there until they can move into the house.

Bump has a surprise for Millie, in a couple months her Choctow grandmother, Oka, is coming to live with them. Millie is thrilled, this will give her a chance to get to know her grandmother, who she had just met prior to her wedding and learn her history.

However, things don't go as smoothly as they would like. There are many challenges facing them, dangers and unexpected events adding even more tension between them. Including a secret that Millie struggles with and the need to tell Bump but is fearful that it will change things between them. Add to that so called friends that betray and friends that become family. Who can Millie trust and who can she depend on? Will her secret destroy her marriage once she trusts Bump with it or will he embrace her with his love?

I have not read Into the Free-yet but am eager to read it to learn of Millie and Bump's early years. I really enjoyed this book and found it hard to put down. The story delves into secrets, betrayals, problems trusting, but there is forgiveness, restoration, joy, love, faith and blessings too. I found myself wanting to have a good talk with some of the characters and the way they were behaving. Some of their struggles were of their own making, which is true of most of us. I could picture the ranch in Colorado mountains from Millie's descriptions. There was a glimpse of their faith but would like to have seen more of their trust in God in their lives.

Absolutely loved When Mountains Move   Sep 21, 2013
When Mountains Move, the sequel to Into the Free, was very well written & kept my interest from the start. I enjoyed it even more than the first as there was less tragedy, though plenty of trials, and more joy though it made me cry. It is the continued story of Millie as she begins her life married to Bump & they move to Colorado to start a Horse breeding program & cattle ranch. Millie wanted her life to be free of the secrets that caused so much heartache in her families life but doesn't know how to tell Bump of the trauma she's been through. Will secrets continue to haunt her life or will she finally trust his love with no secrets between them. You will enjoy sharing Millie & Bumps journey Ranching in Colorado. Julie Cantrell does a great job making her characters live in her books.
I received this book from bookfun.org in return for my honest opinion.

Wonderful page turner  Sep 15, 2013
When Mountains Move is the first book I have read by Julie Cantrell, although this is the second in the series. I was blessed to be sent both by David C Cook and will be reading Into the Free shortly. That said, the second book did stand on its own, although I am sure once reading the first one, will add even more to the story.

Millie and her new husband move to the Colorado Rockies, from Mississippi, leaving behind all that she knows, and the people she loves as well as a deep, dark secret...or so she thinks.

"...The mountains are barely visible, just cloud-shaped formations rising above the dry, dusty prairie. Nothing majestic or glorious yet, but still, they signal hope. Change. A new life. And suddenly, I think I might be ready.

'Look,' I tell him. 'Two peaks, standing together. Just like in my dream!'

'Can barely see 'em.' He laughs.

I stretch my stiff muscles. 'Bump? You really think we can move mountains?'

'No doubt,' my husband answers, full of confidence as usual."

pg. 53

They arrive to a less than welcoming town, and to downright shocking living conditions. But they are a team, and are prepared to face this new life together.

"The sun stands proud above us, and sky stretches blue into forever, and I am wrapped in my husband's arms. Here, in this moment I am completely at peace.

'We can do this, Bump.'

'We can?' He still sounds doubtful.

If ever Bump needed me to be strong, to be sure, it is now. I look him in the eye and make another promise. 'We will.'"

pg. 72

Many an interesting character enter the story, as well as friend and other from their life in Mississippi, with just as varied interactions which make for a page turning read.

I enjoyed walking with Millie and Bump as they work side by side, grow, and go through the ups and downs of life, accomplishing much, especially for young Millie who is mature beyond her years. Major struggles and choices to be made-each with their own consequences.

Millie's part Choctaw and we learn much about her heritage through her grandmother, Oka. Lots of wisdom to be shared, and a wonderful reminder of how blessed we are to have grandparents, and older relatives to learn from.

Friendship is covered so well, both the good ones and not so good, and we learn that things may not always be what they seem. Don't jump to conclusions. Sometimes you just have to trust, have faith.

Matthew 17:20

And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.

I was sent this book through bookfun.org in exchange for an honest review.

An Outstanding Read!  Sep 13, 2013
The book When Mountains Move, was written by Julie Cantrell, and published by David C. Cook.
This fictional romance/drama novel was exciting from beginning to end. The author has Millie Reynolds, one of the main characters, tell this outstanding, exciting story in the first person. Millie tells of a wedding in the first chapter that is to take place between herself and Bump. After the wedding the newly married couple starts their cross-country move from Mississippi to Colorado during World War II. They deal with secrets from the past, trials, hardships, struggles as well as happiness while dealing with a new marriage. Will the challenges bring them together or break their relationship? Read to see if the couples’ beliefs can move mountains so they can achieve things that seem difficult.

The description and detail in this book are just amazing and the characters are strongly developed. Even though this book is a sequel to Into the Free, the books stands on its own and you don’t have to read the first book to realize what is going on in the story. I thought the book was outstanding and would recommend it for everyone to read.

Thank you David C Cook Publishers for offering it free in exchange for my honest opinion and BookFun.org that made it all happen!

When Mountains Move Millie's Story  Sep 7, 2013
When Mountains Move by Julie Cantrell
This book is the continuation of Millie’s story from Into the Free. I enjoyed this book but must admit I have not yet read Into the Free. It can be read as a stand alone book, but because I enjoyed this one so much I will be reading the first one. When Mountains Move is set in the beautiful Rocky Mountains of Colorado. Young newlyweds Millie and Bump set out across country on their own. As they struggle to build a home, ranch and veterinary practice they face trepidation in the mist of Millie’s secret. Read the story of Millie and Bump’s fear of an uncertain future, the challenge of taking a risks, and the redemption and freedom that can be found when a secret is no more. See how God works out the bad for His own good. Meet her Choctaw grandmother and learn her rich history. The author Julie Cantrell brings the characters to life and walks you through the struggles of the 1940’s. I want to thank the author Julie Cantrell and publisher David C. Cook for bringing good clean Christian books like this one to readers like me. I would also like to thank The Book Club Network Inc. for providing me with this book in exchange for my review.

A Stunning Continuation of Into the Free  Sep 2, 2013
When Mountains Move is the 2nd book after Into the Free. I was totally eager to read this book after reading the first one and the author did not disappoint me. I liked this book a little better than the first one, it was really sad to me. In this book emotions are all over the place, for me that is. There was some parts that I got really mad at the characters, some I laughed with them a lot, and a few places where I wanted to cry. It almost seemed to me that the author answered every question I had from the first book, while exceeding all my expectations I had for the second book.
I cheered for Millie as she set off for Colorado with her new husband Bump. You remember Bump from the 1st book? He worked with Millie's Dad at the rodeo; but did you remember that he had his future all mapped out and was on his way to a great life, and wanted to take Millie with him.
In this book Millie also gets to meet some long lost relatives, some great some not so good. She also meets some new friends, some who treat her great some who terrorize her. And she spends the story getting to know her new husband, but did she forget about her old love.
Most of this story takes place in Colorado and I'm familiar with this area, always though about living there. I love the way she describes every little detail of the ranch, the house, the buildings, the trees, the paths she takes to ride her horse and all the emotions of each main and secondary character there is. A lot of thought is put into relationships and how they work also, and what is real and what is not.
I love this paragraph - "Oka moves slowly, touching my hair, my face, then my shoulders. When she finally wraps her arms around me, I don't want her to let me go. I am drawn to her in a way I've never been to anyone and I can't help noticing all the ways we are alike. The color of our eyes, our hair, our skin-darker than Bump's even though he spends every day in the sun. She bites her bottom lip and pulls back, closing her fists against her side, perhaps to keep her hands from shaking."
I would recommend this book to anyone loves a love story, you can't get any better than this.
This book was given to me by BookFun to read in return for an honest review.

Stirring Sequel to Into The Free!  Aug 27, 2013
Millie discovers hope in the opportunity to move forward with her life, far from atrocities of her past. Sadly, Millie's past is destined to become a major component of her future. Her choice between the two men she loves eventually creates questions in her mind regarding whether she has chosen the best course for her future. Opportunity awaits her and her new husband, Bump, as they set out to brave new worlds in the mountains of Colorado, far from the heartache in Mississippi. The challenges they face appear insurmountable when they realize that their "new" homestead is uninhabitable. Using every moment of daylight Millie and Bump attempt what appears to be the impossible, but their perseverance rewards them with an inhabitable farmstead and outbuildings with 5,000 acres of land to raise horses and beef cattle.

Julie Cantrell has received numerous awards for her debut novel, "Into The Free," which has been optioned by a production studio with hopes of bringing her story to the big screen! Julie's sequel to "Into The Free" surpassed my expectations! Her attention to detail is outstanding, and her characters are so well illustrated that I felt myself living Millie's life throughout the story! Vivid portrayals of the landscape throughout Millie and Bump's journey to the Rocky Mountains are eloquent, from the yellow flowers Millie so loves to the mountains that greet them. The hardships and disillusions they face are realistic and believable. As with Julie's debut novel, I feel that "When Mountains Move" is an exceptional work of artistic creativity. I highly recommend this inspiring book!
