Overview
Cordelia Lewis watched Bernard Howard, the love of her young life, go off to fight for our country in WWII. And she has spent the last three years creating the Pine Cone quilt that will grace their marriage bed when he comes home. Each row of triangles signifies a layer in her life, sets of memories, hopes, dreams, and prayers for her future, enough spoken words to cover them forever. Her image of their "happy-ever-after" grows proportionally as the quilt expands. But is the man that returns from the war, the same man that she remembered? Are the dark shades of color that she had to use for the outside edges of the beloved quilt prophetic of her life to come? Can love and faith overcome all?

Reviews - What do customers think about Pieces Of The Heart (Quilts Of Love)?

Love Story filled with Hope  Aug 21, 2013
Can love survive the span of a war? That is exactly what you will learn in The Pieces of the Heart: Quilts of Love Series by Bonnie Calhoun.

Cordelia Grace has fallen in love with her hero, Bernard Howard. Bernard has now joined the army and will go and fight in World War II. While Cordelia waits for him she makes a guilt that weaves the love, happiness, pain and the longing of waiting that they have for each other. Can their love bare the throngs of being separated?

This is not only a story about someone waiting for a loved one to come home from war but it attacks racism. It’s also a story of forgiveness and find the faith that is needed to survive when times are rough.
This is the second book in the Quilts of Love Series. Each book brings love and hope in a sometimes not “too friendly” world.

pieces of the heart  Aug 19, 2013
Pieces of the Heart by Bonnie S. Calhoun
Love this series and this book is a keeper. It starts out with Cordelia Grace and she's just a teen when the bullies in town go after her but Bernard Howard, the new white kid in town sticks up for her.
Years later she's talking to her grandmother and she's telling her the story of the Pine cone quilt and how each girl who's 18 is presented with her life covering with pieces of fabric from worn out clothes or other special pieces.
Folding the fabric into a square while praying over it. how priceless!
The story also follows Bernard and when he's younger his father beats up his mother and himself. He can't wait til he's 18 and able to leave the house.
Time frame for this novel is when the war is ongoing and women must work in factories and Japanese are being held in camps. It effected all parts of the country.
Cordelia was to wed Bernard next year and he didn't want her to work outside the home.
Love that she uses her hands to design clothing. Bernard learns of his mothers sin and hopes Cordelia's father the pastor can help her have faith again.
Misunderstandings among them leads to disagreements and arguments and I wonder if they will ever get back to what they had. Cordelia is not sure how she can tell him of what she saw his father do.
Seems there are more questions than answers ... His life leads him into a different direction and after a tragedy in her life she must seek work... Love how the bible and the quilt hold the answers to all the problems...
Love the storyline and the mystery and revelation of the quilt. An excerpt from another book in this series is included at the end.
I received this book from Abingdon Press in exchange for my honest review.

Fascinating Quilt and WWII History  Aug 16, 2013
Bonnie Calhoun’s Pieces of the Heart provided quite a history lesson about World War II, I also was treated to all a quilt I’ve never heard of and the story behind it.

Cordelia's Pine Cone Quilt was started by her beloved granny for Cordelia’s upcoming 18th birthday. This quilt was a picture of the life of the owner. The history/background sewn into the quilt via well loved articles of special clothing that make the quilt a visual memory quilt. While piecing the quilt together the maker prayed for the owner. Cordelia's granny referred to the quilt as Cordelia's prayer covering, not only for her, but her future family as well.

Cordelia grew in faith as her story unfolded in testing and trial at every bend in the road. While Cordelia is finding her faith and character, her beau, Bernard is being tried at war, and brings home some serious after-effects.

This is a nice book option for readers who like to delve into meaty topics with their history. War, emotional , spiritual and physical brokenness and abuse, depression, segregation and immaturity are a few of the major hitters. Calhoun lightens up the heaviness by spanning the book over years so some of the sorrowful events don’t impact the reader too intensely.

Full of nuggets of wisdom  Jul 29, 2013
This book is full of treasures. Nuggets of wisdom, deeper understanding of Christs love, it can all be found in this book.

From the first chapter I was pulled into Cordelia's story and her struggle to trust God, something I can relate to.

Bonnie shows us the racism that existed during World War II not only between caucasian and African America individuals, but also the racism that exists between African American's themselves. How heartbreaking, but so real.

She doesn't hold back in speaking truth in this story and showing the reader the raw pain of her characters.

This is a fast paced book. A lot takes place in the 219 pages. A fast read if you are looking for something quick.

Of course I enjoyed the story of the quilt and when you read the book you can read more about what the quilt means to Bonnie in her letter to the reader. This is more than just a story for her, it comes from deep places in her heart.

Overall, a touching read that made me want to wrap up in a Pinecone quilt :)

A copy of this book was given to me by the publisher through the Christian Fiction Blog Alliance in exchange for an honest review.

Informative & interesting WW2 novel  Jul 20, 2013
As a CFBA blogger, I have had the pleasure of reading most of the Quilts of Love series. As the daughter, daughter-in-law, and granddaughter of quilters, I have enjoyed the series thus far and am quite amazed at the diversity of the books. Subject matter ranges from contemporary to historical to mystery/suspense and each novel has been unique. Yet each plot revolves around a quilt.

Bonnie Calhoun’s Pieces of the Heart features a Pine Cone quilt, a traditional quilt popular with African-American women. I loved the fact that each quilt was stitched for a specific recipient and that the stitcher prayed over each piece of fabric as she put together a “prayer covering” for her loved one.

Despite the fervent prayers of her grandmother, Cordelia Grace remains resistant to God. After all, Cordelia’s father is a pastor and her parents have displayed a mixed message about their faith most of her life. There is one person Cordelia knows she can count on other than her grandmother and that is Bernard Howard. She has loved Bernard since he rescued her from a group of bullies when she was much younger and they plan to marry as soon as she graduates high school. Alas, nothing ever stays the same. Cordelia is faced with one tragedy after another and even Bernard has deserted her to go off to war. Has God turned His back on her completely?

Bonnie has bravely included several hot topics in her novel. Racial prejudice is something Americans still deal with daily but I learned a few things about the prejudice during that era that I was not aware of, especially the poor treatment of African Americans by the military. Add to that other subjects like parental abuse and tragic deaths, and it is easy to understand why Cordelia’s faith was challenged. But one of her grandmother’s statements resonated in Cordelia’s mind over and over until Cordelia began to understand how many people are motivated by their pain.

Pieces of the Heart is a great book with many life lessons that should be taken to heart. You’ve done it again my friend!
