My great aunt gave me this series after she read it and so I've decided to go back and read some books that I seem to have missed.
Last Light is the first book in the Restoration Series by Terri Blackstock.
Let me just say...WOW! Talk about a read that will make one think! This is an excellent, could this really happen read!?!
It is one of those heart thumbing, stayed.up.too.late because I just need to know what is going to happen next!
This read begins with ALL electricity and modern conveniences coming to a dead stop! People have to find a way to get home without cars, find a way to cook without electric or running water, no grocery stores are open because store can't function without electricity.
Also, the "evil" comes out in people. Good people try to maintain some sense of decorum.

The world has suddenly gone dark and quiet. Something has caused all forms of power to go out, from advanced forms of technology to even the smallest battery. Communication is at a standstill, cars are left unattended, people must now walk on foot to get around. Chaos is erupting everywhere. In the midst of this, the reader is introduced to the Banning family and their struggles to adapt to this new type of world. As their town tries to live in this new society, murders keep happening forcing the community to realize the murderer is one of their own.
When I read this book, I got freaked out thinking about what if this really happened today. Loss of communication would be totally devastating to our livelihood. Just when a hurricane or blizzard comes, we complain about not having electricity for a couple of days. Here in the book, the characters have no idea when or if they will ever get power again. It's scary to think about what it would it be like to not know what was happening elsewhere. Perhaps we take technology too much for granted? I understood how Deni felt about not having any contact with her fiance. I even asked my boyfriend what we would do in a situation like this because I would be worried like she was (he reassured me that he would come for me). My only complaint with the book is that the bad guy in the book is really predictable. I had a sneaking suspicion who it was from when the murders started and I was right at the end. Even the way the character acts totally gives him away. Deni is also very whiny and selfish at times, I know she was worried but she should have thought about her family first. Other than that, I did enjoy this book. It gives a new twist to the end times story and it makes you really think about needs vs. wants. A very thought provoking read. | | |  | Great story idea. However the heroine was very unlikeable and annoyed me so much that I almost stopped reading the book. Some of her actions were so ridiculously shallow it was completely over the top.
I wanted to like this book because the plot point was very intriguing and Ms. Blackstock is a respected author. I was disappointed that the story was so predictable. The writing wasn't dense enough to support the plot, which centered around a global catastrophe. The characters were stereotypical and the faith elements contrived, obviously pushing the "message." Blackstock has demonstrated in her past novels that she is a capable Christian writer, but y this novel does not stand out. Maybe I expected too much. I wish this novel would have gone above and beyond. It seems like a missed opportunity for Mrs. Blackstock. The concept of this storyline is fascinating and made me realize just how complacent we have become in the world due to our modern conveniences. The characters are well-written and believable, and you can really fall into the story as if you are there. I find this to be the case often with this author's books. I really appreciate a novel that can bring tears to my eyes due to the realism of the characters.
I also appreciated the Biblical concepts and the way she applied them within the story. When challenged by hardships beyond our comprehension, how would we handle passages like James 1:2-8 or Matthew 5 & 6?

There are so many books about the end of days. While reading Last Night you keep wondering what it would be like living without engines, electricity, running water and especially without communication. No news, no internet, no TV, no radio. There are disaster issues from the government in our country that warn us to keep food and water for four days in our homes. But what about day 5... I keep thinking that in our western society the consequences of a disaster like this are underestimated in this book.
