This was a pretty strong mystery. I figured it out before the end, but not right away, so that was good. I liked the main character, and enjoyed that she wasn't too perfect. The internal conflict was good and realistic.
One thing I did not like about the book was the whole character of Serene. I couldn't stand her, and as a result didn't care if she lived or died. I felt like we were supposed to feel sorry for her because of her past and excuse much of what she did as a result while knowing it was wrong. But the things she did to Parker are just in no way a result of friendship and their relationship was so one-sided. At the end, it seemed to be implied that she was trying to save Parker's life, but that didn't really come across to me. | Parker James, the singer/songwriter heroine of the novel, has to choose between expressing her Christian convictions in her songs and watering them down for secular audiences. And the author, Terri Blackstock, exxpresses her own convictions without toning them down for a wider readership. Her concern isn't so much in converting non-belivers as it is to give deeper insight into the decisions to be made by those following the Christian path. And at the same time, she gives us a suspenseful thriller. I term this a thriller rather than a mystery because the perp is ultimately revealed by circumstance, not by the deduction of an investigator. This is of course highly recommended to Christians, but I feel non-Christian readers will also be rewarded by this insight into Christian ethics. | | | | Refreshing! Nov 13, 2009 |
Again, another excellent book from Terri Blackstock. I have yet to be disappointed with her writing! Double Minds takes the reader to the world of Christian musicdom. Add murder and greed and you have yourself a twisting, fast paced, completely absorbing novel. I found the book fascinating and read it while I was on vaction this year during July 4th weekend. I found her AFTERWORD especially touching in this novel.
I am sincerly hoping that Terri decides to make this book a series!
